The Setting - [thumb]http://www.1337upload.net/files/texasmapdesignplan.png[/thumb] All 3 major cities in the Texas Triangle and the Capital will have fictional representations featured in a large map 10km by 10km (About twice the size of GTA SA's map) with the state being split up into several counties that will tie into the story. State of Goliad(Texas) Named after the first town to secede from Mexico 175 years ago, it is the largest state in the lower 48.you get to explore the eastern part of the state over the course of the game Allenton (Houston) [thumb]http://www.edwardburtynsky.com/WORKS/Oil/Oil_Book_Large/TRANSPORTATION_and_MOTOR_CULTURE/035-HOU_HWY_07_04_Oil.jpg[/thumb] Named after the two real estate agents from New York that founded the city on one hot day in the august of 1836, Allenton has grown to be the largest city in Goliad as well as the only major city to have ready access to the Sea via Galez bay, it has nearly a quarter of the Nation's refineries on its outskirts, and as a result the downtown area is dominated by the oil firm buildings . This city has the distinction of sitting on the border between the deep south and south western culture, and home to a large black population who have managed to invent a style of music only comparable to dubstep in shittyness, that is Chop and Screwed music. Longhorn City (Dallas-FTW) [thumb]http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/travel/properties/2680/Dallas_Skyline_01.jpg[/thumb] Only Steers and Queers come from Goliad, and keeping true to this classic saying, you'll find plenty of Queers handling steers in Longhorn City, and I hope you keep lube in your bible, because it's not only famous for it's stockyards and being the last bastion of civilization between Allenton and the Canadian border, it's also the only urban part of Texas where god and the republican party reign supreme, and you're liable to get shot by the local Swat team on camera to be broadcast on national Television. Bexar (San Antonio) [thumb]http://www.dicksonfurniture.com/Dickson%20Furniture%20Houston/San%20Antonio%20Skyline.jpg[/thumb] Goliad's oldest city, home of 'The Valero' mission, and originally named San Guadalupe de Bexar, it's the site of the only Mexican military victory in world history, and boy doesn't it show. This is the largest Latino majority city in the United States, the City has managed to retain its unique Spanish culture despite growing influence from Goliad, American and Mexican culture creating Stephen (Austin) [thumb]http://expressionsandinsights.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/austin-texas.jpg[/thumb] The Capital of Texas, don't be surprised to see the gun totting republican governor jugging and old school hippies still stuck in the 1960s and smoking weed and complaining about the system on the same street. This city is hated not for being 50 miles too far west to be called the San Francisco of the East, but for all the god damn one-way streets in the downtown area. The city is home to the state famous Pecan Street, which is home to more bars than beer brands, and live local bands every day of the week. The Story Basically the story is this, you begin as some random person from out of state that got drunk and ended up strained in Allenton(Houston), Goliad (Texas) with no ID and nobody to go to, and can't leave due to a lack of money, as result the player is forced to look for ways to make money under the table as the State Government won't issue him legal identification without his documents present. Effectively rendered no better than the Mexicans down south, you go forth, after being stuck making $20 a day doing manual labor a few days(mostly cutscenes) which is barely enough to pay for a room in a local roach hotel(save point), involves such task as having to drive a truck and ending up in a fight with a crackhead trying to steal tools from the work site(tutorials), you meet a out-of-work gun toting Tejano ('Richard') who main job is to keep the Mexicans in line, how ever he becomes sympathetic to your predicament decides to become friends with you by introducing you to one of his cousins('Lorenzo') that gives you a place to crash (a apartment in the ghetto) and job making deliveries. After working for Lorenzo for a couple of jobs, one night this changes, with members of a rival gang to the one that unbeknownst to you Lorenzo is apart of, stage a home invasion which Lorenzo repels with a scoped hunting rifle, how ever wanting revenge, Loren gives you a pistol and orders you to chase down and kill the home invaders, which leads to a car chase which ends with them hitting a telephone pole and you gunning them down. After which you make you way back to his apartment, which triggers a cut-scene half way back where you are pulled over by the police, quickly you hide the gun under the seat before getting pulled out of the car and arrested, after being taken to the car while another searches your car, the officer asks you a question which you respond to, which clearly surprises the officer due to your accent. 'what? you aren't Mexican?!' he says nervously, which you reply no, after which he uncuffs you and apologies, and he then brings up the gun, 'we know you can have one in a car without a license under state law, but you know you need to tell us if you have one as soon as possible?' which you simply respond 'no but I'll keep that in mind now', leaving you armed (i would like to make this a game mechanic) After being impressed with you gunning down the home invaders, he decides to introduce you to the gang and sends you to do various crimes such as being a getaway driver, burglary and crashing a party eventually you get arrested for getting into a highspeed chase with the police after stealing a car. This is where the next chapter in the game starts. You get released from the local county jail, where you run into a local corrupt businessman ('James Grymes'), and after seeing your car chase on the local news, he decides can use someone like you to put him in Allenton(Houston) by sending you to do various criminal acts against his competitors, derailing your plans to leave anytime soon, and to ensure that he promises to use his connections to the local sheriff ('John Moore') to ensure you don't leave after you rise a wimpier to him after being. Eventually this all I have thought up and leads to this going to the very top of the state government and a showdown at the state capitol,
Sounds like a good setting, though I'm probably biased because I live in Fort Worth. :v: Seems like a massive amount of work though.
its an original setting, don't remember any open world games set in Texas. will the main villains be the Jesus Mafia?
its an original setting, don't remember any open world games set in Texas. will the main villains be the Jesus Mafia?
I haven't made it that far yet. And I've finally come up with a license plate design I am pleased with.
A GTA game in Texas would actually be pretty cool.
You should make one for Wisconsin next. Snow and farms are a lot easier to make than cities.

you should make everyone incredibly fat and christian oh mega churches everywhere
So you have all of the design and everything done. how about working on the actual game first?
That's not how game creation works. If you just make up ideas along the way your program wouldn't be as good as it could be because you would have to go back and fix the code you made before to work with the new idea.

No clue. It doesn't look very well built though :v:
Took a road trip to Portland this week, nothing like driving through Luling to drive home how shitty Texas is outside of the capitol.

Remember to add potholes to the roads :v:
Okay, I have a road map somewhat finished for it. [thumb]http://www.1337upload.net/files/goliadroadmap.png[/thumb]
Design wise it would be a bit boring though. No hills or exiting things like that. Texas is so flat.
Seems promising, keep us up on your progress.
Design wise it would be a bit boring though. No hills or exiting things like that.
are you just ideas guy, or is there any real game development going on, apart from design?
It's still the concept stage right now, though do textures and icons count as development?
It's still the concept stage right now, though do textures and icons count as development?
textures, yes deffo. good luck :)
You need really fancy Buddhist temples in the middle of industrial districts.
Also a mission where the jesus mafia orders you to blow up the den of false gods :v:
Also a mission where the jesus mafia orders you to blow up the den of false gods :v:
Fit the narrative and objectives to the game, not the other way around. Way too often concept stuff like this gets flooded with "You should have a part where you do this" or "there should be a gun which does this". Early focus should really be entirely on working out exactly HOW you want something to work. What sort of game, how it plays, not trying to jam in content as you go.
