Devil may cry is much more challenging, much more of a beat-em-up, but god of war had the better story.

They're completely different styles of action game. DMC would much better be compared to something like NG or Bayonetta from the looks of things.

Ofcourse you can compare them.
Except they're so similar, there's no point in comparing them.
They're pretty much the same game, same creator, same mechanics, similar movesets.
They're the same gameplay, but the thing that makes the difference is Bayonetta's speed. It makes a huge difference
You'll finish both of them in about three hours and never play them again so don't worry too much about which one you waste your money on.

If you want depth to your combat and a decent challenge?
Get Bayonetta. Though keep in mind that it'll spoil you. Just like a lot of action games kinda sucked before the first Devil May Cry (Also a Hideki Kamiya contribution.), action games are gonna feel slow and clunky after Bayonetta.
Devil May Cry. Combat in that kicks the shit out of GoW.
God of War. Though I'd suggest to play the second game, too. If you also like Greek mythology you'll like it even more.
