Seriously, on almost every thread people moan about how the newest sequels screw up the franchise and stuff,
Like Red Alert 3, I liked it, with all the stuff and shit,
Or Far Cry 2, it's a great game, the only minus is the malaria crap,
Or Red Faction 2, never played it, but people tend to hate it,
And so goes on with the list...
So I came up with this little diagram:
1st game:Awesome to many people
2nd game:Shit or just ok
3rd game:People hate it
And so on,
Also, so what if they try new stuff? sequels are supposed to be sequels with new story, plot and enemies, not just remakes with better graphics
So, why exacly?
Sequels do not suck, people just have high expectations.
He has a good point, like, if Prototype had a sequel, you make up one of the hardest to develop expectations ever, if you find at least 1 of your needs for the sequel not fulfilled, you go batshit insane on the game
Red faction 2 is rather old
Red Alert 3 was shit. Dumbed down, similar campaigns, and the whole fucking game was tailored specifically for horny 12 year olds.
does far cry 2 even deserve to be called a sequel?
Red faction 2 is rather old
It kinda sucked. I have played it through. The story is shitty and it is not even close to the original cool Red Faction style.
There was like 4 or so Far Cry games. I don't even know what was the first. There was a Wii version, a 360 version, a Xbox version, and Far Cry 2. IDK anymore

You guys are missing the point
Farcry 2 isn't a sequel
Tales of Monkey Island is something you can't hate though.
Red Alert 3 is more a remake
1st game: Great, new concept and wonderfully done.
2nd game: Gets a bit stale
3rd game: Either they try something new and totally fail or it's just terribly stale.
Mostly this.
There are still really good sequels out there. Max Payne 2, for instance, was a huge improvement over the already great Max Payne 1. Then other games like Splinter Cell try a new concept, even though people like it as it is, and end up with games that shouldn't even be called a game in that series. *cough* Conviction *cough*.
because people act like elitists to series they play so they cry whenever the developer changes the series a bit

Personally i don't hate the new sequels. Gears of war 2 is a cool game too. I don't see any problems with the sequels. I kinda like sequels. Some of them are even better than the old ones. Red Faction though, was a big disappointment.

Not allways though.

Shame it's not a decent remake.
Far cry 2 was repetative and naggy. Red alert 3 was just a bad game.
Far cry 2 was a sequel only in name
there are absolutely zero connections to the original as far as I could see.
It wasn't bad but it had some problems that made it annoying to play.
But seriously, Crysis is closer to being a Far Cry sequel than Far Cry 2 is.

You were wondering why it was like that. I told you.
You left out the shitty sequel fallout 3 because it sucked.

The Jackal looks like the FC1 character who I can't remember.

His explanation is 100x times better than yours..

Don't forget the awful AI and enemies that refused to die and just respawned in 10 minutes anyway.
Did you ever consider that the reason people don't like the sequel of a game is because it's actually not good at all? Or doesn't improve from the first in enough ways to be good?
Because 2 things can happen:
1. The designers are planning a sequel and end the first game with a shitty cliffhanger. The hook is, in most cases they don't announce this before the release of the game. Hype builds up, everyone is dissapointed because of shitty cliffhangers.
See Crysis and Asassins Creed for this.
There is nothing wrong with a GOOD cliffhanger. A cliffhanger that still makes you feel like you accomplished something.
2. The designers didn't intend to make a sequel but the game is received very well. Money kicks in and publishers decide to turn the game into a franchise.
That leaves open several options.
Designers still make sequels: The forced explaination feels artificial + you get this "then why the fuck was the first story-arch important, the evil guy is revived, replaced, whatever"
-> makes you feel shitty
Designers make a prequel: The forced explaination feels artificial(yes, the same point) but this time you played the other game first and already made up your own mind about what happened before and happens after.
-> you feel unsatisfied
Designers make a totally different game with basically just the same name: Well that's totally stupid and destroys the good name of the first game.
Sequels do not suck, people just have high expectations.
Red Alert 3 was terrible. It was what EA thought Westwood would have made.
Far Cry 2 had a lot of nice features, that were done badly...weapons that work fine in the enemies hands jam in yours. Drop a grenade and the grass burning could kill you and leave enemies standing, yadda yadda.
Never tried Red Faction.
