So, I recently bought the Megaman Zero collection. I've beaten them all before on the GBA (except 4), a long time ago. I forgot how difficult these games were. I was attempting to get decent grades on each mission, but that soon became a second-tier priority to actually finishing the mission. Are there any hardcorest of hardcore gamers out there who have managed to S-rank every mission?
Zero 3, maybe it's just the fact that I played that one first, and it also was the first Mega Man game I'd ever played, but something about it is just intensely charming. It was the first of the series to drop the weapon levels, which honestly was quite a mistake, because you'd farm them in the first few levels anyway, cutting out the more interesting gameplay. I also really loved the first mission, it was an great hook to fight Omega at the beginning.
I have a feeling I actually might be biased towards Zero 3, but everything about it is so perfect. The baby Cyber Elves constantly flying around, and so many ways to play the game. Personally, I preferred to play with the Z-Saber, and practically only the Z-Saber. At first, I never ever S-ranked any missions because I took all the help I could get from cyber elf augmentations, though I got some of the EX skills through that A rank cyber elf.
The first four missions were fun and unique as hell; I know them by heart and I remember all the mistakes I used to make. The chip system was never really intrusive and entirely optional, but it was amazing to find out that there were elemental weaknesses and that they also affected EX skills.
Zero 3 and Battle Network 4 spoilers
[sp]When the game broke into it's final linear stages, it was tough as hell and I remember grinding crystals so I could level all my elves for the final fight. Fighting all of the bosses again was some of the best fun I ever had as a kid, bosses were the shit to fight. Fighting Omega at the end, with all the fire in the background and fighting YOURSELF WAS FUCKING AWESOME. I beat Battle Network 4 before, and fighting yourself was fucking cool.[/sp]
For me, Three will always remain in my heart as one of the best games ever. Of course it takes the cake. 2 comes next because of the cool venues and Elpizo was such an interesting character, followed by 4 because well, it's the ending, and the ending kicked ass, and 1, even though it started it all; it seemed to only exist as a primer, a proof of concept that a game based on Zero would work though it was still really good.
I never managed to S-rank every single mission, though I've S-ranked up to the first four missions in 3.
I share pretty much every opinion of 3 with you. I think what makes it my favorite just might be the ending. It was so mind-blowing the first time I got there, and the billion times subsequently afterwards. While I really did enjoy the multiple forms you could get in 2, some of the levels were really hard, and that immediately set me up with a bad taste in my mouth years ago when I first played it, though I enjoy it now.
I've managed to maintain a steady A rank throughout 3, but I've only gotten 1 or 2 S ranks.
