• Questions Regarding Xbox 360 and Updating

As I haven't used my Xbox 360 in quite a while, let alone connect it to the internet, it's very outdated. So outdated it's actually using the original dashboard which I personally prefer over the 2 succeeding UIs. So here are the questions:

Will granting my Xbox access to the internet force an update?
Is there anyway to update and keep the original dashboard interface?
If the update isn't forced, can I access the live marketplace and download things(ie the Need for Speed Hot Pursuit demo) without updating?
What are the benefits in updating and are they worth it?
Is there an update change-log I can see somewhere?
Will new release games run on old firmware?
That's all I can think of at the moment however I may update the list if any more come to mind. Thanks in advance!

But maybe. 4. The screen looks different, video Kinect, ESPN 3, Hulu Plus, all require XBL Gold. 5. Not sure. 6. Maybe not, I heard BC installed the new xbox dashboard when you played it, so no.
Anyone else? I think I might just take the leap and see what happens, however I need to find a switch first so there's still plenty of time to reply :)
That's pretty much it, that guy got those all correct. [editline]8th November 2010[/editline]
1. Yes. 2. No. 3. You can't anyways, you have to update. But maybe. 4. I went through with the update and everything went fine. The new dashboard isn't as bad as I had previously thought, however I still prefer the original. I am also disliking the idea of these 3D avatars, not much I can do about that other then ignore them I guess. Thanks for the answers
That Xbox was worth about 400USD easy.
Personally when the first new update came out I was all angry and complaining about it. For about a day, then I made my friend update his. Some new games force you to update anyway.

I am not someone who spends some gamer points on clothes for the avatars. I spend them on games, namely on demand once, and XBO, and usually DLC(good ones though, like Mass Effect). Also, XBL Gold now cost 10 dollars a month(60 a year).
Now that this thread has served it's purpose I figure I may as well use it for another question I have. What's the point in installing a game to the hard drive if it still requires the disc to play? I can think of a few reasons though it doesn't seem like it's worth it, especially if you only have a 10GB hard drive like me.
Runs quieter, and is less of a burden on your disc drive.

Pretty much it. :ninja:'d [editline]8th November 2010[/editline] I would do it for any game that you play a lot. I did it for Halo 3, Reach, and MW2.
Alright thanks for that, but as my hard drive is only 10GB I can only store 2-3 games on it.I'm guessing most of the consoles you purchase these days come with hard drives larger then 10GB?
Just wondering, are there any free themes?
Just wondering, are there any free themes?
Theres a couple if im not mistaken. Not the best themes, but they are free. And yes consoles come with larger hard drives now, my Elite came with 120GB Drive. Addtionally, installing the game reduces load times mostly. Not noticeable in all games, but games like Forza 3 makes a world of difference.
The best part is installing games to your harddrive
