• Are video game discs CDs or DVD's?

I was just wondering what they were. They are obviously not re-writable, but I kinda want to know what they are. In case I ever back up my games, or mod a disc or whatever.
DVD if it was a Cd it would be all like n 64 games in terms of graphics and content
DVD if it was a Cd it would be all like n 64 games in terms of graphics and content
Did you forget that the n64 famously choose to not use the CD format, but the Playstation did? Games use DVDs, normally dual-layer ones which can hold up to approx 8GB
i know that i mean in terms of content and size
Thanks for the help Siminov and Appox. So if I were to make a backup copy of a game for an xbox 360 (the only current-gen console I own) on a DVD-RW, 4.7 gigs, would I be able to play it if said game was small enough to fit on the disc?
Uhhh, well they currently do DVDs, but not too long ago they were still released as CDs.
I'm assuming you mean console games, since PC games usually make it pretty obvious on the box. Current-gen games are on DVDs, and I believe last-gen games (PS2, Xbox) also were.

Older games were on CD, I believe. I have a copy of Doom 3 that's CD; 4 discs.
If you're going to backup a 360 game, you're going to have to flash your 360's DVD drive to be able to read it. And no, a 360 game on a normal DVD won't work, in fact, it won't even fit, all 360 games have padding data which -cannot- be removed like that of a Wii game for example. Finally, just doing a disc-to-disc copy of a 360 game won't work, you'd have to rip it, patch it and burn with the right layerbreak. EDIT- Wait, what? How is that dumb?
i know that i mean in terms of content and size
You can put crysis on CD's.
PS3 uses Blu-ray Disks. CD is usually used in a general term for Disks. Blu Ray, CD, DVD or otherwise.
PS1 used CD's Xbox used DVD's PS2 used DVD's Wii uses DVD's (1 or 2 games use DVD-DL's such as SSBB) XBox 360 uses DVD-DL's PS3 uses Blu-Ray
they use floppydisks
DVD if it was a Cd it would be all like n 64 games in terms of graphics and content
Not true, you can have multiple CD's that install all of it on the hard drive. And then you use the one disk to play it.
i know that i mean in terms of content and size
Baldur's Gate 2, anyone
CD were the standard for PC until 2005 when the DVD switch was made. Now everything is DVD. All console have been using DVD since 2001.
i know that i mean in terms of content and size
Games that use CD's include Halo and Civilization IV (although the latter was on 3 discs), therefore your argument is invalid. Most games (XBox and later PC Games) use the DVD-DL format, which is a DVD with two layers of information on it. Prototype and Call of Duty 4 are on the DVD-DL format (just two examples), and DVD-DL discs hold 8.5 GB. The discs aren't as cheap as regular DVD+/-R's though.
Now days they use DVD's. CD's were a thing of the past. And Blu-Ray is an excuse to be cool.
Baldur's Gate 2, anyone
am i the only one who actually know that baldur's gate 2 conveniently has a prequel Called baldurs gate and took up 5 discs, making it more relevant for disc-spanning jokes than it's puny 4-disc sequel? Long ass question up there
And soon everything will be BluRay, unless Microsoft decide to be sore losers and use DVD again in their next console.
ofcourse they will, be sore that is. no one has said this yet...but it depends on when the game was made... usually it's DVD-DL now... but from 96-04 it was cd after that it was dvd and DL
X360 uses dual-layer DVDs which have double the capacity of regular ones. PS3 uses Blu-Ray. Wii uses DVD, I think. PS2 used regular DVDs. Gamecube used a special format. PC games generally use normal DVDs.

Like Rogue Galaxy, which caused problems with some PS2's. Metal Gear Solid 4 was speculated to be a Dual Layer Blu-Ray. But I don't know the truth in that, but someone else might.
Maybe.. Sadly I only have BG2 because I baught it in some awesome big cardboard box with throne of bhaal. Depends. PS1 games were CD-ROM, PS2 were DVD, and PS3 are Blu-Ray. Gamecube and Wii use a special format, but the size is the same as a Mini-DVD or DVD, respectively. XBox and XBox 360 use DVD. PC games used to come on CDs, but many come on DVD now.
early ps2 games came on cd's [editline]10:46PM[/editline] they were blue
You can't just take an X360 game and burn it onto a DVD-DL and expect it to work. X360 games use special encryption methods.
You can't just take an X360 game and burn it onto a DVD-DL and expect it to work. X360 games use special encryption methods.
Exactly. It would be pretty much impossible. Or else everyone would be doing it and you don't see very many pirated 360 games.
