Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media
The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat

Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later

Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)

Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Sony's perfect security has been breached, but not seriously. This "security concern" is the power to access hypervisor mode (more here: http://www.ps3news.com/PS3-Hacks/ps3-is-hacked-by-george-hotz-hello-hypervisor-im-geohot/). Which simply is the base code of the PS3 and all the raw data.
Progress definitely has been slow and no one has yet been successful in playing a pirated PS3 game. Although one update to this hack is showing more possibilities (http://www.ps3news.com/forums/ps3-hacks/xorhack-v2-0-updated-ps3-exploit-toolkit-arrives-110237.html).

Whether you agree or disagree with Sony's actions, I definitely want to see more of what this exploit/hack can do before it gets put to a premature halt. Potentials range from pirating to making the PS3 more personal.

Oh and if you don't want to update custom firmware is being promised.

Does this mean I used to have the possibility to install something like Windows 7 on a PS3 without much difficulty?
If so, I'm PISSED.
Then again, Sony was never very good at letting their customers do what they goddamn want with their product (See, PSP and the Custom Firmware that replaces their shitty-ass browser with Opera Mini.)
Really, this loses nothing of value.
Really, this loses nothing of value.
If all you wish to do is game, then yeah.
Holy shit the rumors were true.
[editline]08:58AM[/editline]
Also please tell me it's an early April joke.
Fuck.
If PS3 hackers manage to do something useful they'll find ways around this.
If all you wish to do is game, then yeah.
you can still do everything you already do on a PS3, just not install linux.
and that's like what 2% of the people with PS3s?
"In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system."
That's just bold. Yeah right, removing my ability to install another OS will totally make the PS3 more secure for me, the user.
goddamnit sony stop taking away all the neat features in PS3 :argh:
fuck you sony!
i wont update my console.

I jumped on the PS3 waggon late so I`m stuck with a slim unti I get a fat, I`m just commenting for now.
Linux on a PS3 is useless anyways
Linux on a PS3 is useless anyways
Well this hack could make it useful which is the thing, allowing people to have a better understanding of the emulation/booting/running process of the PS3.
Linux on a PS3 is useless anyways
well, i use Megabox which allows emulation of basically any console prior to 6th gen. this includes an out of the box support for the ps3 controller. if i lose this, i'd go badshit insane. i'm not updating, for now.
While this is a pain in the ass as Linux on the PS3 has uses other than bypassing security, it still seems like a smart move. If Sony can stop piracy before it sets in then it will deter the hackers from producing software, and deter the skiddies from using the software.

Because the way to combat software piracy is removing useful and unique features in an already competitive market.
Couldn't they patch the exploit?

It's a bit sketchy for Sony to just go "Right, we're removing a feature from older models because of a security concern"; most people don't know what this security concern is, probably until they read this thread, and they lose a function that keeps them superior.
I think I know how will we get it back. Some of those PS3 supercomputers get updated, Sony gets sued. OtherOS is back.
Couldn't they patch the exploit?
Sony didn't notice it was possible until it was too late, this patch is damage control.
And nothing of value was lost.

A feature that 95% of people will never use.

Those PS3 farms aren't online and I'm betting they never get updated anyway.

You never know...
April fools! I highly think this is an April fools joke
The other OS can't breach anything important on the ps3. If I remember correctly the up and coming cracked version of the ps3 is a hardware change.
BREAKING NEWS: Due to a security breach, Sony has released an update to the Playstation 3 firmware which removes the ability of users to play games.
Does this mean I used to have the possibility to install something like Windows 7 on a PS3 without much difficulty?
No. You can only use Linux and other OS's that support the Cell architecture.
Windows is shit and only supports x86.

I am going to wait. If GT5 comes before the hack I will update
