What is Neotokyo?
-Neotokyo is a first person shooter that takes place in a futuristic setting based on the movie Ghost in the Shell.
So what is the gameplay like in Neotokyo?
The bare bones gameplay would feel similar to Counter-Strike. There's no respawning. However, you do not buy weapons and weapons are unlocked throughout the rounds on a single map. You unlock new weapons by gaining ranks through completing objectives, killing enemy players, or staying alive in a winning round.
Another thing to note is that the three classses, their advantages and disadvantages make gameplay a lot more interesting than just [round start, guns, run to middle, kill enemy team, round end]. It's not really a rip off of any other popular PC game, it is it's own game.
So whats the story behind Neotokyo?
Neotokyo takes place about 30-40 years from now in a Japan that has drifted into social/political strife due to the inevitable stresses that come from changing times. The Japanese government is grappling with intensified external (Asia geopolitics) and internal (economic/social) problems, and there is mounting pressure from within Japan to return to the days when it exerted influence through military power and strength. A failed legislative push to alter the Japanese Constitution (allowing the Japanese military to engage in offensive actions outside of the country) leads to an attempted military coup by members of Japan's armed forces (GSDF). The coup fails, but was very close to succeeding. In an effort to suppress further coup attempts, Japan's Prime Minister forms a branch inside the Interior Ministry's National Security Forces (NSF) called GROUP SIX. They answer directly to the Prime Minister and are sworn to protect the Japanese Constitution at all costs. They immediately begin to hear rumors of a rogue element of the GSDF Special Forces (JINRAI) maneuvering for a second coup attempt. These JINRAI are Special Operations Group 43 (SOG43), fierce nationalist loyal to their love of country, and a desire to put Japan back into a position of strength and power.
Please tell me this mod is free!
It's free, the only requirement is that you own Half-life 2 or any other source game that provides you the SDK.
How many and what kind of weapons is there?
Around 22 weapons, which include grenades, machine guns, rifles, and pistols.
What type of game modes are there?
Currently Capture the Ghost is the only game mode, which is basically CTF but with only one flag that randomly spawns in set points throughout the map at the beginning of the round. Capturing the ghost, or killing all enemy players wins you the round.
Only one type of gamemode? CTF? Pfft I'll just go back to 24/7 2fort.
Well hold on there corn doggy, it's not the CTF you're used to. Because there's no respawning you don't need to capture the ghost at all. However acquiring the ghost allows it's carrier to see all enemy positions within 40 yards. So it's not just simple flag running.
How many maps are available for the game now?
There's currently 10 maps in Neotokyo, utilizing a wide range of settings. The developers have stated they have 20 maps that are ready for release that they're going to release in packs of 3 over the coming months. This is to avoid just dumping a large number of new maps on the community at once that would be very hard to learn and play actively.
Any classes? What kind are they?
There are 3 classes. Recon, Support, and Assault.
Recon is the lightweight quick class with a limited aresenal. However they have infinite sprint, a long jump, and the longest lasting cloak. They start every round with their primary weapon of choice, a standard pistol, and a knife. At higher ranks they are also given an explosive detpack that can be remotely triggered.
Assault is the medium jack of all trades class. They have the largest arsenal available to them which ranges from shotguns to heavy caliber sniper rifles. They start every round with their primary weapon of choice, a standard pistol, a knife, and one frag grenade. They can cloak for a short amount of time, and sprint for a limited amount of time.
Support is the heavy duty class, as such he's very hard to kill. However, he's slow, cannot sprint, and does not have a cloak. He makes up for this in his armor, his heavy weapons, and his smoke grenades. Despite being named Support, the Support class is a selfish one. His smoke grenades provides excellent cover for himself and other Support, but can obstruct the view of the other two classes seeing as they don't have the thermal vision to see through the smoke. The Support class starts every round with a primary weapon of choice, a heavy revolver, and two smoke grenades.
Features
Some of the features include
-Leaning
-Cloak
-Vision Modes
-fully gibbable player models, arms, legs, torso, heads, etc.
How does Leaning work in Neotokyo?
A key is bound to lean left and right
How does vision modes work in Neotokyo?
There are 3 types of vision modes in neotokyo. 1 mode for each class as such:
Recon = Night Vision
Illuminates dark areas as expected. However the majority of Neotokyo maps are just as bright as your usual source game maps, and the areas that are dark are usually bright enough to see in depending on the user's brightness settings. So it's very rarely useful.
Assault = Motion Vision
Highlights all moving targets. Allows the player to see enemies using thermoptic-camo, otherwise they would be partially or fully invisible. Should be used sparingly because it can cripple you against enemies who are camping, including unmoving cloaked enemies.
Support = Thermal Vision
Highlights all warm bodies in sight. Biggest advantage is allowing the Support to use their smoke grenades as encompassing cover. On certain maps it can make seeing enemies much easier, nt_isolation for instance. Recon that are cloaked will appear as a dark blue and will be difficult to see unless against the proper backdrop.

Disclaimer: Original megathread composed by FunkyHippo and can be found here.[http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=697266] The original megathread was copy pasta'd and then I went and updated a few things and stripped it down a bit. Full credit goes to FunkyHippo regardless.
Didn't some guy already get banned for posting a megathread for Neotokyo?
Didn't some guy already get banned for posting a megathread for Neotokyo?
No idea, the lastest one posted (1 week ago) was basically two lines. The actual megathread was closed due to being too long.
Just checked the Video Games section and there is a sequel to the thread, but it didn't really go anywhere and was basically a copy paste. I added a lot of shit to the original post and put it in the right section.
Needs new maps.
I was expecting a lot of things and had high hopes for this mod, but when I actually played it, all I got was rather a remake of Counter Strike: Source.
Don't get me wrong, the mod is amazing, the content and amount of work put into it is great.
But the gameplay, was mediocre at best.
This is without doubt, the greatest mod I have ever played. This is actually better than a lot of games. I would honestly pay $60 for this, that's how good quality it is.
Det packs on ghosts = :sax:
Needs new maps.
There is a new custom map in alpha right now.
Needs new maps.
Like I said they've got 20 completed maps they're going to start siphoning to the community over the next couple month or two, releasing them in sets of three.
When I first played it, it did feel very much like CSS with a new skin, but after a while it grows on you and it does feel like it's own game. I actually hate CSS, but like Neotokyo quite a bit.
All my friends want me to download this mod, but I just kindly refuse because it seems nothing but CSS with a few extra twists like invisibility.
This game is gonna die quickly sadly. If you go to their forums, most of the posters there are huge elitists who immediately turn down ANY suggestion that makes it even slightly easier for new players (freezecam for example).
As some guy said in reply to their shit, "Your statement reeks of elitism and will undoubted be the downfall of NT."
Game was good, but got boring fast. Definitely needs some new gamemodes; Capture the Ghost is only fun for so long.
All my friends want me to download this mod, but I just kindly refuse because it seems nothing but CSS with a few extra twists like invisibility.
Pretty much. It's more fun than it sounds, but doesn't last half as long in the attention department.
If this were a singleplayer/co-op game, it would be SO much better.
Nope, multiplayer only.
looks very much GITS-inspired for some reason.
I don't like the whole steamroller mechanic where one team gets all the guns, especially in servers with only a few rounds.
Grenades are a little bit imba. They're a one-shot within the radius and explode as fast as CS grenades, and one-shots like that really don't belong in a round-based game like this.
Shotgun blows, but when does it not in multiplayer games? The SLUG doesn't even make up for it.
looks very much GITS-inspired for some reason.
Neotokyo is basically Ghost in the Shell: Source. I'm 100% sure that Neotokyo was inspired by GITS.

Ghost in the Shell and some other anime were their influences. Hence why there's Tachikomas ingame. Too bad they do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING INGAME.
Instead we get 'Huur spider tank imma stand here and tilt my head left and right and not even pay attention to the bloody combat below me.'
A walking spidertank is no fun unless you can do shit with it. It's like what Gabe said when Valve were developing HL1: Cmon, people, you cant show the player a really big bomb and not let them blow it up.
I mean, cmon. You'd think that with a development cycle as long as theirs, they'd be able to add some sort of extra functionality to the Tachikomas rather than let them be moving eyecandy.
Now if only this game was friendly with my PC. ):

a drivable/npc tachikoma would be nice. but it would have to be very difficult to use/get.
They need to even things out. First team to reach about 3 wins will win the entire round, almost each round becomes a 10 lieutenant team against a 10 corporal team.
I'm tired of getting the sniper rifle and the BAM!
Round restarts.
Installed it today, EXTREMELY unstable and slow game, takes 4 minutes to join a game, then there's 50/50 that it doesn't crash with a DX9 error.
Gonna try alittle later then.
Only map I like to play is the snow map where one team is attacking and the other is defending.
Most of the maps are mazes, except for that snow map, because it's just a house on a hill with some random rock walls placed
The objective is unimportant when you can just TDM which is faster and easier, hence why 99 percent of games end up a TDM.
This mod was a huge letdown, i thought they actually knew what they were doing. The content is well made, but the gameplay is horrible and stale
Hey! Finally someone who actually took my thread and just didn't copy and pasted. You cleaned up the thread nicely. Good job!

They do know what they're doing, the players on the other hand don't. So far everyone seems to be an idiot about the game, don't even bother to read how to play the game. And just go around just doing team deathmatch.
What the players don't realized is that it helps to capture the ghost or at least stay alive for someone else to capture the ghost on your team in order to get more points so you can get more guns. And everyone wonders why they get the sniper rifle at the last moment before map change. It's really not hard to stick with the program, I mean how hard is it to NOT whine and go for the ghost and have a good group fallow you to do so.
Seriously in what game isn't there anyone that doesn't stick with the program? I mean wouldn't you rather play with people you frequent with so that way you can actually capture the ghost?
I mean juses christ people, Nobody knows how to play a freakin video game (and I'm speaking of people in general.)
I can't believe it took 4 years to develop this mod, only to just release 1 gamemode.
I can't believe it took 4 years to develop this mod, only to just release 1 gamemode.
It's not like they were working every single day on it. People have real life jobs they have to worry about.
Yea, especially when they were fucking around in the IRC for the last week before the mod was released.
Yea, especially when they were fucking around in the IRC for the last week before the mod was released.
Work + Computers in work = Irc.
Is that so hard to understand?
Why are you defending an obviously poorly made mod, gameplay wise?
Are you a fanboy or something?

There is zero incentive to do what the developers intended. It's far easier to just TDM.
This was a huge oversight by them.
