Look at that goddamn elevator. All of the settings are maxed out, literally ALL of them. I mean, look at Mossman, she's at the highest quality she can go. How do I fix this? It didn't look like that yesterday. Did I fuck something up?
You must've compressed the Xen Relay Elevator Texture far beyond anything you imagined back at Half-Life 1.

If they had any idea what I was doing with model-to-aliasing entanglement--
Oh, listen to me, I sound like a Valve dev.
Stupid suggestion, but...
Did you try checking what mat_picmip is set to?
seriously though why is this happening, mat_picmip is not being very helpful so they aren't compressed, they're just really shitty looking

It's set to -1, which is apparently the best it can go. Setting it to 4 changed everything to a blurry mess so I'm pretty sure I don't want to go in that direction. :v:

Like I said, stupid question. I thought it could have been set to a positive number, and the character models just weren't affected.
what is mat_lod set at
Is the "Texture quality" option set to "Very high"?

Half-Life 1 on the GoldSrc now with HD Models!
Did you try verifying the GCFs? Something could have gotten screwed up.
Look into your Graphic Card's control panel.
mat_picmip -10?
They clamped it for TF2, but other games are unaffected.
what is mat_lod set at
mat_lod isn't even a real console command. Pretty sure you meant "r_lod", though. And even then, it doesn't really effect textures. It only swaps out higher-quality models with lower-quality ones the farther away the get.
Interestingly, there's also some major problems with the lighting. I suspect it's running in DX6 or DX7 mode. Check that.
Open the console, enter "clear" and "differences" (in that order), and the copy+paste the results here.
Delete all local content, and do a fresh install.
It looks as though, while set to -1 ingame, your mip mapping quality level is reduced in your display driver settings. You can change this in Catalyst Control Centre (if you're using an ATi card), or in your Nvidia display driver settings.
I hope you know how to access those, because I'm just going to assume you do.

What a ridiculously excessive thing to do...
That's not excessive at all. It only takes two seconds to delete, and only a half hour to re-install on a high-speed connection.

what if OP has dail-up

Has it occured to you that we don't all have super high-speed connections? :colbert:
According to the Steam Hardware and Software survey, the average connection speed is 2048 Kb/s. That's only 2 Mb/s, and at that speed, it would take hours to re-download HL2.

Reminds me of the time Crysis fucked up the install. Only solution was to wipe it and DL it again. Not fun.
@OP: Have you checked the DX level? I seriously think your problem might be related to that. I mean, no lighting, lowres textures, no shadows, it's all consistent with Source running on DirectX 6 or 7. Check the value of mat_dxlevel.
Look into your Graphic Card's control panel.
This.
This happened to me before, I went and checked my card's control panel and raised it to what it should be and that seemed to fix it.

If it was running on DX 7, Mossman wouldn't have irises or pupils. And I'm pretty sure Valve has made DX level 6 unaccessible.

Uh, what? I know DX6 was removed with the upgrade to the OB engine, but DirectX7 is still around, and unless the Valve dev wiki is out-of-date, eyes work under DX7.
If you have ATI graphics card, disable catalyst AI from CCC
what if OP has dail-up
Then OP would not have bothered to upload an image.
Switch the settings on your graphics card to how they were before you changed them to play minecraft.
I had the same problem, setting everything back to normal worked for me.
Wait I didn't read the OP correctly.
Try that anyways, that exactly how shit looked when I looked at models in Portal.
A combination of this
Did you try verifying the GCFs? Something could have gotten screwed up.
and this
If you have ATI graphics card, disable catalyst AI from CCC
worked! Now I can speedrun through Ravenholm terrified at full visual quality!
I've always hated CCC, useless piece of shit, that's what it is.

HAH. Okay so OUTSIDE the elevator you can see the textures all normal and fine and high quality, and then suddenly it all goes to shit inside the elevator. I'm pretty sure the problem is just with the elevator texture, but at least everything else looks better than it did before now!
Is it me or is why is everything massive compared to Mossman?
Is it me or is why is everything massive compared to Mossman?
It's probably because she doesn't have a shadow for some reason.
