Dawn of War 2 and other Relic games 50% off + 8 new maps for DoW2
50 replies, posted
The game is finally starting to become a bit more for what I payed for with their updates.
Everyone that doesn't have it should get it.
8 new maps? Cool, but way too late (and considering how long ago the last maps were released, they should be more than 8). Weren't they talking about expansions, DLC and shit being released soon and in large quantities before release? And the game still lacks a lot, the matches are static and dull, with the same old tactics being used over and over, it's not dynamic in any way (and I guess that the new maps will be "3-lane-style" maps as usual).

NVM its posted on their website, its a steam deal.
I might get this now, didn't like the beta/demo as much as the first game but since it's on sale I might as well.
Woop, bought Dawn of War 2. :buddy:

Bask in the glow of my shitty laptop!
I would play it again if they changed it so that it was more like CoH.
Large unit sizes, vehicles worth a damn etc.
Imma just buy it. I've been wanting it for a while.
If the atrocious AI problems and glaringly unresponsive control issues have been fixed I am going to have to reinstall it.
Augh, I wish I waited to buy the CoH games. They're 50% off too. :frown:
it cost less then 20 retail anyway
and why can't steam add homeworld on steam?!

I actually find it annoying because it's too much like Company of Heroes.

Some things that should have been imported from CoH weren't, and those that shouldn't were.
Example:
-The fucking physics, in DoW2 they suck, why the hell didn't they make them like CoH? I mean watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0wJMAEHgFk
-The vehicles having different part of them, which can be destroyed, damaged and so on (it was so in CoH, but not in DoW2).
-And a lot more stuff, instead they just carried over the bloom and shit.
Also (the following makes me somewhat rage), early in development (therefore there are few textures and the effects are placeholders) DoW2 was going to be like this:

Yes, those are dynamic break points, yes those are air units, and yes those are special deaths depending on which weapon was used, instead of the dull identical deaths we got now.
Why did they cut all of this you may ask? For balance...

This.
I'm considering buying Dawn of War 2, depends on how much the Imperial Guard are involved.
I went ahead and bought it. However, I can't get it to download. It gets about half way through, then will stop for some reason. When I go to resume it, it starts all over. I really wish Relic would do something about that since it's the same way with Company of Heroes.
Venom, theres only IG in the campaign missions and you can't use them.
they only fo looks
i bought dow platinum edition :D

I never want to play release DoW 2 ever again.
Will the price stay forever, or is it just for a week?

That is so obviously pre-rendered...
I love DoW 2, and I love CoH, but to me dawn of war appeals more because it's a far, far more intense game.

They aren't pre-rendered, but I do think that they are pre-calculated to ensure that it showed off the game. Still that means that while in a non pre-calculated match the Landspeeder may not have hit the coloumn, if it had it would have looked like that (the video showed what could happen, not what would have happened every time).
Physics like that in an RTS would make the game almost unplayable on all but the beefiest PC's. Aside from that the animations are impossibly smooth and have none of the caveats that RTS animations usually do, there is a shitload of motion blur and, again, it's all just way too smooth.
With the right textures that'd be crysis worthy, and it's a goddamn RTS.
And aside from that it's rock-paper-scissors in all its glory. A dreadnaught can do that to infantry but gets one shot by a tank, which gets killed by..flying death machines? What?

The animations are so smooth because they most probably used ragdolls for when the unit was "incapacitated" (so not only for when they are dead, but also fro when they are flying, falling, getting picked up and so on), they most probably did not plan it by the usual RTS standards, they had something very different in mind (which explains the heavy use of physics, they probably started by building it like you'd build an FPS). It would have been a nice contrast to all those bland and boring RTSs we get today.

Nowhere near Crysis, a lot heavier than the current one that's for sure, but it would have been worth it.
And aside from that it's rock-paper-scissors in all its glory. A dreadnaught can do that to infantry but gets one shot by a tank, which gets killed by..flying death machines? What? Two shots by the tank, which had a prism cannon and it followed the WH40k lore by the letter (it destroyed a line of infantry, a dreadnaught and a lanspeeder with ease, like it should since it is a powerful weapon). Also it wasn't rock-paper-scissors, since the tank took out one of the lanspeeders and was about to take out the second one too, it just followed the WH40k lore more than the "tournament faggot" (anyone who plays Super Smash Brothers knows what they are) version we got now.
Answer in quote.
Show me one RTS that looks like that now. One.
They didn't cut those features just because of 'balance' issues (or 'BECAUSE THEY BE DICKS I CAN MAKE A BETTER GAME') they cut them because they are far beyond the capabilities of our current hardware

No RTS is like that, becuase as I said this was most probably thought as an FPS when they put down it's foundations.
And they cut those features because otherwise people with old computers (3-4 or more years old) would not have been able to play it. Modern hardware could easily run that (by modern I mean a good Nvidia 200-series or ATi 4000-series with a equal CPU and 2-4GB of RAM DDR2 or better DDR3).
Looks like I'm getting Soulstorm for the lolz.
Commander Boreale is a total badass though.
