Space pirates and zombies is a 2D top down indie game. It features space exploration, ship customisation, a persistent galaxy and buttloads of fun, as well as an overarching storyline that ties the game together. You can buy it from steam, or their website: www.spacepiratesandzombies.com Basic Gameplay: You're a pirate, in command of a large capital ship named the Clockwork, which serves as your hub of operations. It has several hangars which contain ships of varying sizes and purposes, which you can use for missions across a huge galaxy (with 150-300 seperate star systems). When you undergo a mission you take 3 ships into combat (4 in the later game) and control one directly, while giving orders to the other ships which are governed by AI. During the combat you can switch at any time between any of your living ships, and your ships can be sent back for repairs, refits or replacement at any time. You collect Rez (a valuable mineral from asteroids/cargo ships/other places), Goons (essentially slave labor for repairs/bartering) and data (basically XP for levelling up different weapons and armor) in your travels, and slowly amass a fleet of powerful warships to kick arse across the galaxy. Ships: There's too many ships to list them all in detail (30+) so I'll give the basic lowdown. Ships are split into 5 size categories, with several ships in each. (tiny, small, medium, large, huge) Obviously as you go up in size your weapon capacity, power, hit points, cost and cargo holds increase, while your size profile, speed, maneuvrability decrease. there are also many specialised ships across each size category, some are capable of carrying lots of rez, others can carry lots of crew, others are built for weapons, drones or bombs. In turn, each specific ship design can be fully customised with a variety of weapons, which all fill unique niches. Weapons: There's loads of weapons, but the basic balance is thus: Shields are destroyed by beam weapons. Armor is destroyed by cannon weapons. Hull is destroyed by missiles. You can choose to specialise in one form of weapon or branch out and use the tactical options to take out your opposition, and there's a huge amount of variety and potential for choice, including deployable turrets, mine fields, missile spams, shotguns, EMPs, and more! Factions: There are 4 distinct factions in the game: UTA: A scattered remnant of the old government regime before it collapsed, they're often corrupt, and have the most militaristic ships. Civilian: The general populace, but don't let the name fool you, civilians aren't necessarily friendly, a large percentage of them are pirates, or just scavengers eager to make pickings off easy targets. Zombies: A new biological infection with an unknown source. It infects ships, breeds and is proving to be a mighty nuisance. You: A group of space pirates out to find the motherlode of Rez in the centre of the galaxy. It's up to you whether you'll leave a path of destruction or have an army of friends behind you when you get there. UTA and civilians can be bargained with in a simple diplomacy system, do shit for them or give them resources, and they'll like you. Shoot their guys or help the other side and they'll hate you. Zombies on the other hand can't be reasoned with, and will attack any and all ships on sight with the intent to infect, destroy and spread. Media: www.spacepiratesandzombies.com http://store.steampowered.com/app/107200/ Basically, it's a top down shoot em up in a giant galaxy with missions, factions and zombies. It's well worth your time and I recommend it. Please spoiler tag your story details as well, there's a few twists in there!
This game is fucking awesome - Its like BattleShips Forever but Bigger/Better
It kind of reminds me of Space Rangers. Mighty bueno.
I've crafted this game with 7 coal during the holiday event. This game is fucking amazing!
I got this in the Christmas sale and it's fun... but it also gets really boring. Fighting the same exact enemies with the same exact ship with the same exact weapons for a few hours before I get a different ship and do the same thing. Never really unlocking anything. Stopped playing when the game told me to go to the other side of the galaxy.
It does feel pretty slow in some places, best to not play too much in one sitting. I remember going through only the gates to just explore the galaxy enough to get components and advance the storyline. I like going through the core the first time and thinking you've reached the end, that was a nice twist.
I bought this on release day, played it for a while, forgot about it, and now I'm just coming back to it. How the hell do i defeat the zombies? After destroying the larger ships the spores simply infect my smaller ones, and i do not have enough time to save them. And how do I get more blueprints? I've probably pushed through about 30-40% of the outer rim solar systems, and haven't found any [sp]'huge'[/sp] ship blueprints yet, which sucks...

Most of them are in the core. [editline]6th January 2012[/editline] And god. I hate that Easy Pickings mission.

This is a mistake because it makes everything SO SPREAD OUT. It's a lot better with a smaller galaxy size. I'm nearly at the end of the campaign, [sp]I've cleared the core of all zombie infestation and I'm getting all my fleets up to 100% before I start the final mission(s). It was a grind, but worth it.[/sp] The game definitely gets more fun in the final chapter. But I totally agree that it feels boring sometimes. Hopefully with continual updates it'll get more interesting over time.
Reminds me a lot of Battleships Forever, a game I absolutely adore (and indeed am still playing, though only recently redownloaded it). Definitely getting this.
The only part i didnt like when i played it long long ago were the zombies. more specifically zombie eggs. took far too long to hunt them down to be able to actually leave an area.
I guarantee I'm late, and I'm also bumping an old thread but this game definitely deserves more attention. So here goes: [release]Hi Everyone, Well the name says it all. We will be releasing the FREE Bounty Hunter expansion March 19th. Due to its size and the fact that the Bounty Hunters have become a fully fledged faction with global relationship tracking the expansion has taken longer than anticipated. We have kept this a secret up until now, but we actually decided to give you 10 new ships instead of just 5, so there are 2 new tinys, smalls, mediums, larges, and huges. There is also a new Bounty Hunter tier 3 space station that advances in tech level as the game progresses. It is meant to be a HUGE challenge to defeat so I am sure some of you will enjoy that. The advanced version even has a Mothership beam on a turret. Sooo. yeah... Richard will be posting some pictures of these new ships to get you all excited as well. Here is a primer on how Bounty Hunters work: (Note the design and implementation is mostly done so while we will listen to ideas and welcome them, we will likely not do any sweeping changes that will delay the March 19th deadline. We are treating that as a hard deadline and will do our utmost to deliver that day, assuming no meteor strikes or cyborg uprisings) -Bounty Hunters have a global faction relation (Unlike CIVS and UTA) -About 1/6 of the stars will have a bounty hunter stronghold (their megabases) - Bounty hunters can only act in their Stronghold stars and neighboring ones, therefore it is possible to operate in non bounty hunter space with impunity. Bounty hunters are also only at about half effectiveness in their neighboring stars. -At bounty hunter strongholds, you can pay off your bounty, hire them as ambient helpers, hire them to clear warp gates, and compete in the arena for respect. - There are 150 arena challenges. Each challenge is deterministic and is the same across all skill levels and tech levels. Everyone plays the same event. There are 10 ladders with 5 tiers per ladder and 3 difficulty levels per tier. If you complete a ladder, you get a special prize depending on the difficulty level of the completed tier. (The prize is a specialist, so there are 30 possible) - Respect is the Opposite of Bounty. So Respect counteracts bounty. You get Respect from doing missions, competing in the Arena, buying it, and by destroying a Bounty Hunter Stronghold (VERY difficult) Note: If you are level 50 and the Stronghold is level 10, you will not get much respect for destroying it. If it is level 60 and you are level 50, you will pretty much be considered Chuck Norris. - When a Bounty Hunter base is destroyed, their influence will collapse in that and neighboring systems until it is rebuilt. Bounty tracking will be interrupted and you will be left alone while they lick their wounds. - When you do "Bad" stuff in bounty hunter space, the CIVs and UTA will post bounties. As your bounty increases, you become a more tempting target for the bounty hunters. Eventually, they will start showing up during your missions to collect. Blowing up their ships will not increase your bounty, as they consider that part of the cost of doing business. - Bounty Hunter ships are all very configurable with utility mounts and generally quite odd compared to UTA and CIV designs. I would probably consider them better, but harder to get. For example, there is a small ship with a huge mount called a Cyclops. Umm yeah, pretty scary if you have a decent reactor, if not, it is a floating brick. - Bounty Hunters may extort you when you try to leave their space. This is like protection money. Depending on your bounty and how much goods you are carrying, they will want their cut. If you give it to them, you can leave in peace, if not, be prepared for a VERY hard fight. Their huge ships in particular are pretty obscene, but luckily you can avoid them. That is everything off the top of my head. They are like the icing on the cake faction that can change the nature of other things you are doing. In sector 4 they will also be a new enemy to deal with for those of you who are tired of just fighting zombies. So the nature of Sector 4 will shift a bit too. This patch will integrate itself into an existing save game, but we recommend finishing your current play through of vanilla SPAZ and starting a new one with Bounty Hunters on March 19th. Progressing through the galaxy with this new menace completes the game and should adjust the feel enough to make a new playthrough worthwhile. Both of us immensely appreciate all of you allowing us to make our dreams come true by purchasing SPAZ and this expansion is the thanks for that. It took a lot longer than expected, but you guys and SPAZ are worth it, so we did it. We hope a lot of you can tell your friends about this dropping March 19th so previous players and even new players don't miss out on the new experience! Now back to tuning for us See ya March 19th! Cool that we're getting a free expansion but the game got boring after 10 or so hours.

It looks sweet, I can't wait for more hulls :D New bounty hunter system should keep us on our toes a bit more. at the moment there's no consequences for simply coming into town and fucking everything to shit.
Update is out. It's awesome. I think it's on sale, I'd highly recommend this game!
