I'm sure everybody remembers the disappointing Silent Hill: Homecoming from 2008. From what I've read, it looks a tad better, but I am hopeful as I am a Silent Hill fan. (if you can't tell from my username. James Sunderland was taken so blame that user for my less-than-satisfactory Henry pseudonym.) Hm... I wonder if Silent Hill: Downpour has anything to do with rain. Yes, it does. Apparently the transition from regular town to Hell will be through a "downpour" of rain, and it will be all watery and dark and depressing. You can see this transition down below in the E3 video. Maybe Downpour takes place at the same time as Heavy Rain and we get to use ARI shades to defeat meaty monsters. "FUCK RAIN I WANT A GOOD MAIN CHARACTER" you may or may not be thinking. Well this is old news, but for those who don't know you are going to be playing as an escaped prisoner named Murphy Pendleton. [img]http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/silenthilldownpour12402.jpg[/img] Look at that motherfucker. Here is some more disappointing news. Instead of our beloved Team Silent taking the helm for development of the game, Vatra Games is taking over from previous developers Double Helix (Homecoming) and Climax Studios (Shittered Memories). Vatra's only previous game is a little downloadable game coming out later this year called [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush'n_Attack:_Ex-Patriot]Rush'n Attack.[/url] I miss Team Silent. "Gee Dean, even you must be hopelessly distraught with all this disappointing news for Downpour." Nope. You want to know why? I'll tell you motherfuckers why. They're [b][i]bringing back the old camera angles![/i][/b] Annoying as they were, those camera angles hold a dear, special place in my heart. Something else that is back is exploration. Apparently, the place is going to be so big that you're going to be able to use the subway system to get around. Plus; sidequests, which apparently are one of the things Vatra Games is proud of. We'll see how it turns out. There are also other reasons to be interested in this title, more so than Homecoming and Shattered Memories. Mostly because they're bringing back some of the things we hold dear to us that were put in place by the classic titles (1-3). Camera angles as I just said, but also a returning combat system. Hopefully nothing like Homecoming. Something relatively new that has been featured in Shattered Memories is also making a return. For those who have not played it, several times during the game you would have a flashback (Flashforward? I got bored with Shattered Memories so I didn't bother figuring out what time you were getting the psychological evaluations) to a psychiatrist's office. You would answer questions and do little exercises to determine your psychological status. The first time I played Shattered Memories, I didn't see any difference with what those little tests I did with the psychiatrist. Then my brother made a game and his game was totally fucking different because his options were a little different than mine. New system or not, having that in Downpour would be fucking cool. Did I mention camera angles are returning? Okay, movie break. This video's a little old. It's from E3 last year, which shows some cutscenes from Silent Hill Downpour. Lovin' the graphics. [media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS7xj78t4dk&fmt=22[/media] The fuck is this? [img]http://i.neoseeker.com/n/8/silenthill_downpour31_thumb.jpg[/img] So yeah, no info on the monsters for Downpour other than this...thing. I just hope pyramid head and the nurses stay out. I love them both, but there's a reason only James saw them in Silent Hill 2. I am actually very optimistic (don't you dare) about this title, but the 2 things that are bothering me is that doesn't seem to be as much blindingly-thick fog, and that maybe the atmosphere of being alone is less than satisfactory. Again, we'll see. Info about Downpour is [i]just[/i] coming out a few days ago. Speaking of info, here's some tidbits I am going to shamelessly copy and paste with a commentary provided by me in parenthesis. Yeah take that. [quote=Silent Hill Wikia] -Dynamic clothing changes (From psychiatrist?) -Puzzle difficulty returns -No weapon inventory (One thing at a time) -Combat is similar to the classic titles, but with an Origins-like limited weapon durability. (Yes!) -Damage is indicated by bloody clothes. (Might be difficult to gauge, but cool) -Water is a huge part of gameplay and ‘otherworld’ transitions. -The game has fixed camera angles like the original Silent Hill titles. (Such things please me.) -No weapon inventory (Murphy can only carry a weapon at a time) -Time of day shifts (Real time not confirmed) (Hm.) -Boss battles contain Quick-Time-Events. (Uh oh, I don't like where this is going.) -No returning location themes (Hospital, school) (Fuck! Maybe it's not so bad...) -Enemy chase scenes similar to Silent Hill: Shattered Memories return. (GOD DAMNIT) -The map is very large, exploring the entire town in the game is estimated to take up more than 10+ hours. Multiple side-quests. -Weapons range from everyday items to small arms. (Well at least there's no shotguns) -UFO ending returns (Okay I added this in with no source whatsoever, but if there's no UFO ending there is no such thing as a Silent Hill game) -Like Homecoming, weather will be used to create mood -Combat can be avoided (Don't know what to think about this one) -[/quote] I fucking hated the chase scenes in Shattered Memories. Maybe, just [i]maybe[/i] the camera angles will make up for that. I am going to put these in image tags since they're huge, but they're scans from Game Informer magazine talking about good ol' Downpour. It is actually a little better than what I expected since I was expecting a Homecoming clone, but there are a few things that seem iffy. Maybe it's good they're changing it up while mixing up some old shit. Maybe not.
I'm excited. I really am. Silent Hill has taken a tiny bit of a dip in the past few years what with SH4 being a boring romp through a game that wasn't even a Silent Hill game until the last production stage, and Homecoming being an incoherent mess, but I think Downpour has the chance to redeem it. Let's hope we aren't disappointed! [editline]15th January 2011[/editline] Also I remember you, you're that guy that posted his dick in exchange for a copy of Minecraft! How've you been, sir?
Awful since the guy never bought me Minecraft. Have I mentioned Downpour is going to have classic camera angles? :gizz:
I've never played a silent hill game before.
[QUOTE=Uberman77883;27446025]I've never played a silent hill game before.[/QUOTE] get out of my thread [editline]15th January 2011[/editline] You may return once you have played a demo for 2, 3 or 4.
All I read was "The Heavy Rain Sequel". I was disappointed.
The only Silent Hill games I've played so far are 2,3,4 and Homecoming. I hated 3 because it was non-stop running because fighting 3 closers or 5 dick raptors or 2 cancer blobs wasn't worth it, and the goddamn dogs, and Heather was such a know it all bitch! My favorite character seemed to be portrayed like an idiot that should have gotten so much more spotlight, the detective. Two gave me a boner and goosebumps as the ending rolled, no complaints except for the random puzzles that didn't need to exist (like the cables blocking the door later in the game). I guess the story was VERY subtle, but that was also a plus as it left a lot for fan interpretation which was fun. Haven't finished 4 yet, still working on it, so far it's predictable, but in a good way- you don't want things to happen, but you know they're going to. Henry's the only protagonist who actually goes "What the fuck?" when anything happens, everyone else just rolls with it and that always bothered me. There also isn't much difficulty progression, the enemies just seem to be different models, charge your attack and stomp them, 1-2 punch. The lack of guns was kind of saddening too, especially with that one room obviously taunting the player. Homecoming, I like it, but it's so unforgiving even on normal. I'm constantly out of ammo, the melee system is equivalent to Monster Hunter bosses but harder, and that's just the average enemies. The main character is kind of dopey, but he's a badass. I wish combat wasn't trying to be so tactical, though it does make you want to avoid the enemy rather than beat it down to the ground and stomp it x1000 like the other games. You certainly breath quicker and your heart races at certain parts, I'll admit it's the first game to make me breath a sigh of "Oh thank god I'm alive" after a fight, chase or just a scare. It's just like how RE changed from tank controls to 3rd person running, it's odd but I like it more, I don't get hit because I need to turn and then run away, I get hit because I don't take advantage of the new found agility. I also appreciated that they returned to the "Manifested by yourself" Silent Hill, I missed that from the second, made it feel more unique, I didn't like having to fight the same monsters manifested by Allesa's fear of x. I need to get my hands on the first Silent Hill, apparently it's the best, why is there no PC version?
Hopefully it doesn't have an ending involving aliens this time. [media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tVg27vB-VE&feature=related[/media] EDIT: Yknow, scratch that, it better.
[QUOTE=Tacosheller;27446257]Hopefully it doesn't have an ending involving aliens this time. [media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tVg27vB-VE&feature=related[/media][/QUOTE] By that you mean "Hopefully it DOES have an ending involving aliens". It's a damned tradition. One that SH4 broke and will never be forgiven for.
Holy shit, [b]You get to play as Kurt Kobain![/b]
[QUOTE=Doomish;27446320]By that you mean "Hopefully it DOES have an ending involving aliens". It's a damned tradition. One that SH4 broke and will never be forgiven for.[/QUOTE] SH4 didn't have it? Fuck, I can't use this account anymore. Maybe I should finish games more often.
Wow 1-Player Action sounds so much worse and depressing when compared to Singleplayer for some reason.
[QUOTE=Henry Townshend;27446407]SH4 didn't have it? Fuck, I can't use this account anymore. Maybe I should finish games more often.[/QUOTE] SH4 only had four different endings and they were all based around two easy to accomplish things (clearing hauntings and saving eileen), which was way different from the rest of the series, all of which had several different ways to come to each conclusion besides the first. What always irked me about Homecoming's alien ending was that it was easy to get and didn't require any replaying. You can come across it ON YOUR FIRST PLAYTHROUGH if you make the choices that get it (don't shoot mom, don't forgive dad, save wheeler). It probably confused the shit out of a lot of people.
I'm actually pretty optimistic about this one, let's hope it's not another Homecoming.
I have no hopes for this. And fuck your shit Townshend, Shattered Memories was the best Silent Hill in years. It was unique and it had a very good story. And that should be enough for any Silent Hill fan.
Shattered Memories put a really good spin on the formula. The first time I got chased I fucking loved it, didn't expect it at all. Although I just hope they don't use too many chase sections this time around.

Also, I don't really see what this has to do with heavy rain other than the fact that both games have rain in them.
That was the joke.
Fuck yes, Silent Hill! Any info on the release date?
[QUOTE=Take_Opal;27462364]That was the joke.[/QUOTE] My avatar is currently watching the joke fly past my head.
10+ hours of gameplay. What is this bullshit? It is a single player only game, I want it to be long enough that It doesn't take 2 days to finish. I'm going to keep my eye on this.

[QUOTE=spekter;27462769]10 hours to explore the town fully, not complete the game.[/QUOTE] Oh crap, bad reading on my part. Now that is good.
Getting angry about a single-player game possibly being too long? Jesus, I feel old now. It seemed like only yesterday the world was bitching about most games being too short!
[QUOTE=RikohZX;27463022]Getting angry about a single-player game possibly being too long? Jesus, I feel old now. It seemed like only yesterday the world was bitching about most games being too short![/QUOTE] Nope, I was getting angry because I read it wrong and thought the game would be 10 hours long, but then it was pointed out that it would take that long JUST to explore the map. I hate single player games that last a few hours.
[QUOTE=RikohZX;27463022]Getting angry about a single-player game possibly being too long? Jesus, I feel old now. It seemed like only yesterday the world was bitching about most games being too short![/QUOTE] You read that wrong
I liked the exploration and psychiatry in Shattered Memories, but that's about it. [editline]16th January 2011[/editline] I am just going to assume the release date will be in 2011. Looks like they have enough done that it will be this year.

This has nothing to do with Heavy Rain at all. I see no mention of Jason anywhere.
