which do you think is a better approach to classes in a class based game?:
being able to create a class like in call of duty 4.
or have preset classes that can be customized within the spectrum the class role. example: sniper class can be customized, but only with other sniper rifles.
tf2
Really, it doesn't make that much of a difference, I usually go with one class for each weapon type (shotguns, sniper rifles, assault rifles, etc.) anyways.
I find games like TF2, Global Agenda, and Battlefield more complex and satisfying. It opens more options up when the developers limit certain abilities and weapons to a general class, rather then opening up the whole field for selection.
I believe you see more teamwork as a result.
especially if you take certain abilities and single them out in one class. It makes this class a necessity and almost FORCES teamwork to happen.
Bad Company 2 has probably my favorite kind of class system. (Here's 4 classes, but you can upgrade and customize the shit out of them.)
call of duty 4 isn't 'class based'.

Yes it is. If it wasn't you would just spawn and pick up guns from the ground like the good 'ol days.

Oh the good 'ol days, how we miss you.

No, you choose your own set up, that's not class based. Class-based games have a limited number of pre-defined classes.

Well it's not "class-based" but it's based on classes.

Oh sweet lord.

No it isn't, if it was class-based then you'd be restricted to Sniper to use sniper rifles and stuff like that.

By "based on classes" I mean you create classes and use them. If it wasn't based on classes then, as I said, you would just pick up weapons off the ground.

By your train of thought even Counter-Strike has classes since you choose a pre set of weapons before you start the game.

No, that was going to be my other example of a non class-based game since you don't build a class. In games like CoD4 you build a class, that's what the "create a class" menu is for.
Lead and Gold, but you cant customize.
The thing is the guns aren't all that different in Cod4. As far as main weapons go, it's shotguns, fast shooting things and snipers. And then for perks you have a few different choices as to how you slightly modify your character. So you don't actually get much difference between different classes.
TF2 is the best example of a class-based game. The diversity between the classes is so enormous and yet it all just fits together perfectly. Of course you've still got people crying over the tiny little balancing imperfections that really don't matter anyway.
I really don't think it matters because even if you end up being able to create a class from scratch, if you're smart, the weapons, equipment, perks, and whatever else should go together like how pre-set class systems already are.
world of warcraft does classes the best

I think you made the facepunch record of self-contradictions.
The problem with classes in games like CoD is that everyone's trying to make the ultimate do-everything class, which defeats the purpose entirely.
You mean like the people in MW2 that outfit every class with One Man Army?

 i hope you're joking.
Bc2
I like customizable classes like cod4 because of the independence. Everyone is different and thinks differently. But pre made classes lower the risk of noobs using over powered weapons.
Killing Floor
except they're called perks.
Which is pretty much what they are since all they do is add damage to related weapons and abilities. In a way they're classes though.
