Since I can't find a Megathread on the first 10 pages, and since I'm not a gold member and can't use search, I'll just make a quick thread here, hopefully a die-hard Metro fan can help me out.
I really don't quite get the whole gas mask mechanism.
1. What excactly is the time on the watch supposed to tell me? It's always in yellow or red for me, no matter if I changed filters or not.
2. What excactly does the number of filters I have tell me? I noticed there are, for example, 10, when I left the Metro to go into the dead city once. After 2 minutes of wandering about, I noticed there were only 8 filters left. I didn't change a filter myself, and he didn't automatically, either. So, what gives?
3. When do I need to change filters? What is that supposed to do? Reset my time to green? Often, it doesn't even substract one of my filters, I can stand there hitting G all day long and he keeps on putting filters in his gas mask as if he's pulling them out of his ass.
I really like the game, but I just like to understand the mechanics of the game I'm playing - a bit OCD there. Anyone can answer those questions?
1. It's the time you have left on the surface to breath.
2. It is how many minutes you have totally left. So it isn't how many filters you have.
3. You need to change the filters if he starts to breathe heavy. The filters don't have the same amount of minutes so it's possible you will only gain 1 or 2 minutes from a new filter.
1. I think is the amount of time you have left with the mask on.
2. 1 filter = 1 minute of usage
3. You don't necessarily need to change filters, but it removes the condensation in your mask
The watch tells how long the filter will last.
Fun fact: The watch hands point to the time set on your computer.
he's coming to destroy ussssssssss
I feel like metro 2033 needed a better tutorial level to explain all this
1. i think its how much the filter has left or something green=good yellow=OK red=bad
2.time with the filters left
3.you need to change filters when you start seeing steam on your mask and/or hear heavy breathing
After a while, he will automatically change the filter, notice the condensation. If you change the filter yourself, it will put that filter back in your pocket or something and use a new one. However, when you're out of filters, it will grab that filter you changed earlier and continue using it.
Yeah, a tutorial level or a better explanation for that would have been better...
I still don't get what the difference between the time the watch tells me I have left and the number of filters in my inventory is.
Changing your filter resets the time you have to breathe.
The time you have to breathe is influenced by the gasmask itself, if it's damaged, you won't get much time out of it. The watch shows how much time you have to breathe. If your filter is barely used and you change it, it is not used. If your mask is shitty enough, it doesn't really matter how many filters you have.
Getting hurt damages your gasmask. This is why you see gasmasks all over the place, and can grab them off enemies.
Blues can search again
Remember to hold F to be able to charge your flashlight, something I forgot about until half way through the game :v:

I had my charger out every second I didn't have to shoot something
Metro 2033 was a damn good game
You can also toggle your NVG's off while wearing them too.

Reading the time-piece
===============================================================================
The watch is your indicator of the world around you. Besides accurately
reflecting your system's clock (on the Xbox 360, sign into Xbox Live for the
most accurate time), the time-piece is a visibility meter, and a timer for the
current air filter.
The three lights on the wrist-band will go from green (nearly invisible) to red
(fully visible). In yellow, an enemy will shine his light/torch your way; if
you can neutralize him quietly, the alarm will not sound.
The watch's inner dial with the green, yellow, red is the amount of time left
on the current air filter. If you have additional filters, Artem will
automatically exchange a spent filter with a new one, resetting the timer in
the process (there is no animation on the time-piece, just the air filter being
shown).
===============================================================================
Gas Mask Destruction
===============================================================================
The gas mask can be destroyed by repeated melee attacks. Damaged gas masks can
be swapped for another in better condition, but this process is like the plasma
weapons in Halo -- you generally only swap to improve the status. You cannot
swap for a more damaged mask, even if it means you want to use it to absorb the
final few hits in a fight. Swap masks only when you are moving away from an
area to "maximize" the new mask's life.
Remember that holding the gas mask key toggles the mask on Artem's face;
tapping the gas mask key only swaps in a new air filter (and only when the mask
is worn).
When fighting enemies in exterior stages, shooting the gas mask off a hostile
will cause him to choke and attempt to put on a new mask. You can use that time
to achieve a headshot.
