Deus Ex is considered to be one of the greatest games ever made?

Because frankly, I think it's horrible.
Recently, I got bored of all these new flashy games like MW2 and BC2, so I decided to play some of the classics I missed out on or never bothered playing, so I started playing Deus Ex. To be honest, I found pretty much every aspect of it mind-numbingly bad. The story is decent, and that's the only good thing about it. The combat is terrible beyond comprehension, the AI so bad it's at times hilarious, the stealth system broken, the RPG elements poorly implemented and rather useless. For a game which focuses quite a bit on stealth, it doesn't help that enemies will at times be practically blind to your presence(I just walked into Castle Clinton and not a single enemy noticed me, I didn't use cover, I didn't try to avoid enemies, I just walked in and nobody noticed), while at others they will notice you from miles away. If you want to go in guns blazing, be prepared for some seriously clunky and outdated(even for 2000) combat, with enemies randomly running away from you(I had a pistol and was almost dead, an enemy had a flamethrower which pretty much instantly kills you, when he suddenly ran away from me, without even attempting to attack me), running in circles, sometimes giving no resistance at all while at other times being insanely tough, it's all just really bad. The level design isn't that great either, as well as character design("Hey, let's copy The Matrix, I'm sure nobody will notice!"), and the whole game is a bug-ridden, boring, generally outdated(as I already said, even for 2000) piece of shit, especially compared to System Shock 2(released a year before Deus Ex, also an RPG/FPS hybrid, superior to DE in every aspect). I won't even bother with Invisible War, being that it's supposedly inferior to the original, which has taken a very high spot on my list of the most overrated games ever made.
I'm sorry but you are so wrong. Deus ex is the one of the best RPG's I've ever played. And you do realize that the game is old? and that it was a massive achievement for its time? Combat was awesome, inventory was awesome, atmosphere was fucking awesome, I hope you know that it was in development way before matrix was even thought up.
It really is a bad game. I can't stand it.
Dude! It was like released 10 years ago and you clrearly are wrong about this.
Back then every game had broken stealth and bad AI what did you expect? By the way the game rocks!
Its a good game, but I am fucking shit at it! I guess I need to play it a bit more to get use to the controls!
Once again, that is YOUR opinion, the other 98496389083458409509 believe its a masterpiece.
Well after these long years I've been on facepunch, I observed quite a big fanbase for this game.
Everyone seem to love it but I don't fucking know what it is about this game. Never played it.
Good for it's time.

Afraid not, as I already stated twice in the OP, I've found it to be outdated even for 2000.
And no, not every game had broken stealth(Thief, anyone?) or bad AI(Half-Life, anyone?).
And I mentioned System Shock 2, released in 1999, superior to DE in every way.

You might be right, it might have even been awesome back then(I really think it was very outdated even for its time), but it's not awesome anymore, and I definetly don't see how it can be considered a timeless classic.
It aged poorly and now it's laughably bad, while System Shock 2(this is like, the 10th time I mentioned that game in this thread), which is VERY similar to DE is still a very enjoyable game, 11 years after release.
Ehh, System Shock 2 was awesome as well as Deus Ex IMO. Don't really know why I would hate either of them. Invisible War was pretty shit, and I hope that Eidos Montreal doesn't fuck it up. Most likely they won't too much, but the original had so much good stuff (skills, ammo system, augs) that it's easy to fuck SOMETHING up.
I kind of agree a bit that the combat is somewhat mediocre, and stealth wasn't spectacular, but it worked.
AI was a bit wonky, but I really wouldn't call it downright awful.
What was really fun was the non-linear gameplay and story, the amount of choices and possibilities were pretty big and impressive at its time, and even today, it's still pretty good.
I really wouldn't put it on top of Half-Life, System Shock or Thief, but it does deserve some credit, maybe it is a bit overrated in terms of some gameplay elements, but the story and unique style of the non-linear play itself made up for it.
I think that Deus Ex is epic, but I find it really hard unless I play in a really stealthy careful way.
The question is, how far though Deus Ex did you play?
By the same token, I'm sure someone that only played System Shock 2 as far as the Cargo Bay would consider that game to be shit.
(A fair assumption, people I've introduced to System Shock 2 tend to run into a difficulty wall at that point)
or how about before [sp]SHODAN[/sp] (the Big Bad) is introduced?
Now I actually cannot defend Deus Ex, as I also haven't managed to stick with it. But I recognise it as a game that's better for the overall experience - a game you must complete before you pass judgement.
I havent even finished it and I think it's awesome.

The dialogue was great though.
To me you just explained why it's so great. If it was perfect it would be boring. When you consider everything in the game it's fucking awesome.

Deus Ex isn't a RPG game.

Already reinstalled it twice, since FP seems to like to remind me I haven't finished it yet.
i never played it
:(
I didn't like this game much, did my head in
Well I'm guessing your going to jizz all over Human Revolution (Me too, avatar derp) since it's merging new ideas with the good ideas of DX1.
Deus Ex is one of my favorite games of all time, but I think I'd place Shadow of the Collosus over it.
Especially since System Shock 2 was very similar to DX in gameplay and came out before it.
I agree with everything the OP said.
I've tried getting into the game so many times but I just can't... it feels half-finished.
Just made an image which pretty much summarises deus ex conversation.

It pisses me off.
OP, you're just bitching because you suck at the game.
You're meant to Crouch, use cover, and knock enemies out easily using a Stun Baton to the back of their torso or head. Then you can gather the bodies and mess about with them.

The game is great because it has immersion and a good plot. The combat system is easy to use once you know and understand how to use it. Rocket Launchers for Robots, Gas Grenades for large groups of enemies.
The AI occasionally ignores you because the Unreal engine was as buggy as fuck. Enemies occasionally run away from you because they don't think that they can win the battle, the AI is programmed to run away if survival is low. They will run in circles because again, it is the Unreal Engine.
So what if the characters are based on The Matrix? Whoop-de-fucking-do. It's not like every other game copies something?

I really fail to see why "it was released 10 years ago" is a legitimate excuse for old games. Old movies that are considered classics are still amazing to watch - Ben Hur, Singin in the Rain, Casablanca, they're all still fucking great movies. As far as games go? Well, PONG is still fun, it aged wonderfully. Tetris is still fun. Pac Man is still fun. Goldeneye is still fun.
I played through a little bit of Deus Ex and didn't get anywhere far, so my opinion on it specifically isn't valid. But people apply this same philosophy to games like Half Life - and it clouds them.
If a game doesn't age well, that means it's nowhere near as amazing as people claim, and it's clearly not timeless.
People need to stop using this excuse, really
