I was just reading a thread about dead genres and i noticed that someone mentioned "rts/fps" The first thing that came to my mind was this. Battlezone was made in 1998 and had one sequel which was less successful. (or at least not so appealing to me) plot The plot revolves around the US and USSR competing for a new resource in space in a different version of the 1960`s (much like the concept of Fallout 3, oh and finding aliens-without the stereotypical plot devices we find today) and they fight around different planets in the Solar system. The reason technology advances is the discovery of bio-metal, which allows the world to build incredible machines with ease and new devices like hover tanks. The war part of the game starts when the American base on the moon is taken over by the Soviets, so they relocate to Mars and find the Ruskies are there as well. They also find remains of an alien race that may of created the bio metal-then later a weapons factory is discovered and it is revealed that the aliens have greek culture as they made the Greeks worship them, creating the mythology. The Americans then find out that the aliens fought in a civil war and tried to create a weapon that would destroy the other. The Americans find one out of the three components on Venus, but the transport carrying it had a rogue scientist who defects to the Soviets and helps them to harness the power of the weapons. The player is then tasked with getting the component back, but is too late as the Russians have already created android "furies" to serve them. But they find a mind of their own and turn against the Russians, who are badly beaten and offer an alliance with the Americans. (However, the Soviet campaign is unlocked at this point and it is possible to beat the furies and the Americans to offer a different storyline). Regardless, the alliance destroys the furies as they regroup on another planet, but the moon and the planet are destroyed in an intriguing twist as the furies destroy the core. The player choses to stay on the planet as it starts blowing up, to make sure that the furies are annihilated and never return. Gameplay The gameplay is Battlezone is the true heart of it. It is unique and thus impossible to compare to, so i will have to explain it like you are all thick Mc Donalds workers. Basically, the player has control of himself like in any FPS, (the focus is hover craft combat) but you also have a army to back you up which you have to build. Just like in most RTS games, you start with a resource collector and a "recycler". The resource collector of course collects your resources from bio metal deposits, and the recycler serves as your craft constructor. A multitude of tanks, scout craft, walkers, hover turrets and even walkers can be constructed. You can also outfit with your craft with different weapons. Walkers getting on your piss when in tanks? fit lazers to your tank. Scouts too fast for your cannon? fit chainguns. Cant destroy enemy turrets within range? fit a mortar. <---Its not just "lazer" "cannon" "chaingun" either, as there are different versions of the weapons you can get. The commands side of the game is accessed via 123456789 keys, like in ARMA 2. The above is a standard US "grizzly" hover tank. I would add more pictures, but there are very few images of the game available.
Ah, I had forgotten this. Maybe I'll reinstall it
Ah, I had forgotten this. Maybe I'll reinstall it
Its a pity that Pandemic went down in flames. I would of loved a sequel. Might add BZII to description in the morning.
Me and my dad used to play BZ2 all the time. He always kicked my ass.
Never played BZ1, but BZ2 was pretty much my childhood. Played it all the time with my brother, and still play it with my friends every now and again.

It just didn`t feel right and it was too sensitive. Then when i changed the sensitivity it was still either too rough or too much like skating on ice.
BZ2 is a classic. Tried playing BZ1 once a few years ago.. couldn't do it. Spoiled by BZ2 probably..
I remember this, got it ages ago. The best part , to be perfectly honest , is the rave cannon found in the tutorial level
I got BZ2 with my GeForce 2 MX. Played it maxed out and couldn't believe how far graphics had come. Good times, a next gen BZ would be amazing.
I've still got my BZ2 disk locked up somewhere, it's kinda like a relic for me because it's like one of the first games I got really into, and the first game I played that used WSAD for controls. :v: I remember my brother brought it from Florida when he visited me, he gave it to me because he couldn't figure out the controls. Once I finally figured out the keyboard config I was totally hooked. Hell, even today I still play it sometimes. For an old game it really does have some nice graphics.
Also, with BZII i got stuck on that level where two tracked scion tanks come up to your base really quickly before you can build any decent units, so i could never do it. It was the same level the ISDF asks for an armistice and Braddock orders you to kill shabayev.
I just played this in coop with a friend a couple days ago, good fun. [editline]9th December 2010[/editline] Well, BZ2.
Bleah. I remember the motherfucking arcade game. Where it's at.
I remember Battlezone 2. Best motherfucking game ever.
BZ2 is one of the old games that is still enjoyable today because the gameplay isn't really outdated and the graphics aren't much eye-straining
I -love- Battlezone 1 and 2. Especially the RAVE gun in BZ1.
I remember how my base was easily defended by four turrets equipped with linked Flash Cannons set near a Supply Depot and I never had to worry about defense ever again. My favorite attacks had to be when I sent 10 APCs against my brother and he couldn't deal with the massive amount of pilots from that attack. Battlezone was a great game.
Battlezone 2 was the first RTS game I played.
I remember this game. When I played it, I had no idea what the hell was going on but I remember thinking it was the most amazing game ever. As far as I'm aware right now, it was pretty damned awesome.
I am pretty sure you can download this off their site for free now
I am pretty sure you can download this off their site for free now
Yup, you indeed can: http://www.battlezone1.net/home/page_7/index.html I don't think the second one is up for free officially though.
The second one doesn't work properly on my newer computer hardware, I get weird missing polygons, but still loved the game in my childhood.
Battlezone 2 is boss too.

Oh my. This old game. I remember this. Oddly enough, I only remembered earlier today, and then I find this thread on pure accident? How odd. Now I'm entertaining the idea of playing. Hmm.
I loved the first one, never completed it but I got to the black dogs or whatever. Might try it out again if GOG gets it or something. Great game too. But I never saw the appeal of BZ2, it sounds like a bunch of fuck really. Infinite resources wtf. Part of what made BZ great was the fact that there was an exact fixed amount of resources on any given map. You had to take what you needed not having it spoonfed to you. I was really impressed with the live scope on the sniper rifle too! :D Probably the first game to do something like that I'm sure.
I never played the first one, really would liked to have, but BZ2 was fucking awesome.

I don't really see how there's a difference. :raise: Also yeah, the dynamic scope on the sniper mode on the rifles was amazing, even today not many games have that.
The geyser was not a source of biometal in BZ1 it was for powering the construction or something.

Here it is incase you missed it: http://www.battlezone1.net/home/page_7/index.html
