Everyone has more fun finding faults in games and picking every nit that can possibly be picked rather than just playing.
What happen to the good old days where games were meant to be played not judged.
I blame entitlement complexes that have developed over time
When they charge so much money, make so much money, rip us off with worthless DLC and, in the case of PC gamers, stab us in the back, we have the right to nitpick.

Pretty much this. I'm not really one of those gamers who think modern games suck (unless they do rightfully suck), but the general attitude towards making games has changed. No longer is it about putting out a great product, but how to make the most money from that product (usually from milking the fanbase). Not saying that's wrong, but it hurts the quality of some games.
If you feel "backstabbed" by a faceless company that doesn't really give a shit wether you live or die then you may need to find a new hobby.
Most don't get it's a business that wants money, not gaming UNICEF.

Yes, but there's a big difference between Valve and Activision.
Both wants money, one supports the consumers.
Valve.
Before anyone thinks this is a discussion about wether you've ever been wronged by a developer. It's not, I'm talking about games that are generally good but people overblow small blemishes or design decisions in games that make it seem like a terrible deed has been done.

Good Example.
But really, no one can blame Activision. They're making loads of cash, and think every thing is fine. But to some, (I'd like to believe most, but seeing how many gamers bought the overpriced DLC...) it's actually harming the quality of their games.

How?
Oh wait it's the MW2 arguemant again
How about you actually look at games fucking past MW2 and actually notice good games are still around on all platforms

Oh you're so cool being all detached and awesome, viewing games as so insignificant.
It's a hobby. Yes. But are we not entitled to enjoy our hobby and get the most out of our hard-earned money that we spend on the hobby? Of course we are. What you have said is, in itself, an argument for my side. The very fact that these companies have become so faceless and disrespectful of their customers is, quite frankly, disgusting. They made gaming about scrutiny and money and not about fun with their commercial ways. So few companies remain who actually care about giving the customer a good experience and those that do are prone to going out of business (example: Free Radical).

this
it's really irritating to me
too many people in this community feel bigger than what they are
There are plenty of people who are perfectly content with games. It's just the whiny 12 year olds who get everything they ask for who come and whine on forums.

I view buying a crap game the same way I view buying crap movies. Let's use Stephen Spielberg (Activision) as an example, he has a track record for making good movies, yet the last couple of his movies he has spit out have been utter shit, do I feel betrayed every time I went to the movies only to leave dissapointed? Not really, all I know is that his current movies sucked and I won't be seeing anymore until he gets his act together, and by doing that I save money, meaning he doesn't get my money.

If they got everything they wanted, they wouldn't be whining now would they?

Urgh. The injustice isn't in games being bad, it's situations like the one with MW2 with the PC gaming community being completely undermined for commercial purposes.

Isn't that the same shit hollywood does, what with having the same rehashed movies all the time?
Companies are meant to make money buddy, they wouldn't be where they are had they not made all those games you love. to put it in your hippy terms, you fell for a "goldigger".
Because they tend to release games knowing damn well it's as buggy as shit and will need many patches to make it right because all they want is the cash? It sucks.
Because there's no dedicated servers in real life so life is automatically the worst thing in the world. Also life is so unbalanced and not balanced for lean.
I really don't get that fussed over games.
The only thing I can imagine seriously flipping my shit over would be if Activision somehow got their hands on like, Bioware or something. Which would obviously never happen since Bioware's part of EA now, but just the thought of the two extremes makes me shudder.

Yes they would, because new shit comes out and they just want more
I hate people who hate games because they're popular.
Games don't suck because they're popular. You're just a whiner who wants to be different that is all.

No they don't give me a reason why they do.
If they did suck they wouldn't be popular.

This "it doesnt suck because people like it" concept is very naive. Don't tell me you can't see the impact a name on a box has to sales.

It started off like every other game however.
It's not like games like halo started out with a popular name.

We all know that Hollywood is making shitty movies with billions on special effects. If you name a good movie, I can name a douzen of bad ones.
It's mass production. Games used to be made with passion by a small team. Now they are mass produced by thousands of emplyees. How much passion can a dude make if his job is to write stories all day, all night?
It's how mass rehearsal works at hollywood, how mass production works in games, and how it will work with the next trend.

That.
Cod4 was great, it's sequel, however, was not.
And in some cases, it's the community that makes a game suck.
Like halo 3, I doubt I have ever had so much fun playing a game with friends, on custom games.
But the match making is utter shit. The game it self is amazing, development wise. (I think the engine is beautiful.)
Games like mw2 are just bad because the multiplayer is so unbalanced that it makes some people feel like a bad ass, and they just think they are good. (Turning them into leet speaking dumb asses.)

No but it did start out as a launch title published by Microsoft with unprecedented funding and media coverage. This gave it a huge platform to be launched on with virtually no competitors and, as such, it broke sales records and continued down the path of every other money-making giant by becoming gradually worse and worse.

What's wrong with halo
