What is ENB Series?:
ENBSeries - is the collection of modifications for games, every one for it's own games, but some of them may be compatible with another games, try yourself. Why is that for? There are many wonderful and interesting games, which we can play multiple times again and again even if they too old for modern graphic standarts. Frequently, new games are nothing more than good looking image, ignoring technological progress also not a reaso. Solution is simple, just make better graphics for lovely games. Most of the game mods changes games style and feeling, also not all the games allows modding. I think that the best way to implement effects of next-gen games from consoles, don't You think they looks different? Unfortunately, that's not enough, the game itself is limited by design and effects and can't be photorealistic (with exceptions of course), so some modded by ENBSeries games looks ugly, another - perfect. What the mod capable of? The main reason for this project is to simulate global illumination (occlusion, indirect lightning as parts of it) for more realistic looks of objects in games. Many games from next-gen consoles already use these effects, on personal computers one of the most famous game Crysis from Crytek also use ambient occlusion. How to see this algorithm in action? Look for nearest objects to each other, shadowing and color transfering appears beetwen them. There are several more changes by ENBSeries, game specific, f.e. GTA San Andreas version include reflection for vehicles and bloom with time adaptation.
Vorontsov Boris (ENB developer) is from Russia, and thus his English isn't exactly great. To put it in a nutshell, ENB Series consists of a modified d3d9.dll and a config file. It'll hook into any DX9 game (Non supported games only allow Bloom and Color Correction) and allow you to forcibly enable the shaders packaged with it (Bloom, Color Correction, Realtime Reflections, SSAO, Motion Blur, Etc.), or you can script your own shaders in HLSL and throw them into effect.txt. ENB Series is particularly useful for older games (Such as COD2) which do not have Bloom or Color Correction out of the box. The games it fully supports (Such as GTA:SA) also gain an even larger graphical boost. (In the same folder as the main executable, in most cases.)
Sweet stuff, I'm definitely gonna try it out.
It looks, uh, Darker? Otherwise, besides the bloom, there isn't much of a noticeable difference, unless I'm missing something.
Wait, what? Fallout 2? What does that give you? ..How does that even WORK with a DirectDraw game? And when will he get the HL2 and Oblivion versions working on ATI cards? :uhoh:
It looks, uh, Darker? Otherwise, besides the bloom, there isn't much of a noticeable difference, unless I'm missing something.
Call of Duty 2 isn't supported by ENB Series as of yet, so only Color Correction and Bloom works. Try the fullscreen pictures, there is quite a big difference. And keep in mind, ENB Series is completely customizable. I made my config very subtle, You could easily add more bloom or change the color correction to make the game appear grittier. (Or you could add more brown for added realism.)
So I can't play online and don't mind the graphics, How does this make a alternative to a game I can play online?? This is all makes no sense if you really care that much about graphics.
It looks no different.
It looks no different.
Look at it in fullscreen, or even better, ingame. There's quite a big difference.
The main draw of the enbseries mod is the screen space ambient occlusion. This is a technique which simulates the bouncing of light rays and occlusion of said light by onscreen objects, resulting in much more realistic dynamic lighting (as opposed to the now-standard full on occlusion shadows that are in all current games). SSAO looks more realistic because of the way it handles light blending. You don't see only exact, finely outlined shadows around your room, do you? Well, you'll see a few, but generally, there are light areas, and there are dark areas. This is why SSAO is awesome. So far, ENB Series only supports SSAO on a few games. I'm sure all renderware games work with it (GTAIII, GTAVC, GTASA), but there are a scant few others. Since ENB Series is already calculating depth information so that it can render the SSAO, it also can employ other depth-based effects like depth-based water fog, DOF effects, and depth-dependent motion blur (as of yet, not implemented; we currently only have depth-independent motion blur). Here's a screenshot of the SSAO functioning in Crysis: Warhead: As you can see, there are naturally light areas, and naturally dark areas, as opposed to the normal light/occluded in most games. Combine this effect with a little bloom and HDR, and some full-occlusion shadows that are properly smoothed, and you have an effect greatly resembling real life. Of course, since ENB Series is a mod and is sketchy at best, its SSAO won't look as good as the in-built Crysis Warhead SSAO, but the effect is pretty much the same. This is ENB Series adding SSAO to Crysis: Without ENB Series: With ENB Series: With ENB Series: Without:
Overall I can see subtle differences in the shadowing and lighting, and it makes a large difference overall. It is also nice to see the use of bloom in games that would not normally have it. I will be tryin this out myself.
Damn, can Halo 1 do this?
Damn, can Halo 1 do this?
AFAIK, when I tried it, SSAO wasn't working, but everything else was.
I was considering Crysis but after I saw those screens I now know my game looks far better, don't need anymore AO when what's there works fine. It's extremely subtle in COD2 aswell! :(
I was considering Crysis but after I saw those screens I now know my game looks far better, don't need anymore AO when what's there works fine. It's extremely subtle in COD2 aswell! :(
Well, the version made for Crysis was very early because he stopped caring. The SSAO in newer versions was much better looking, but since they don't support Crysis because Boris stopped caring about it, they're useless for it. And, of course, since a more accurate, faster, in-engine SSAO is native to Crysis Warhead, this becomes a non-issue. You have to admit, though, the forest comparison looks great. The SSAO really enhances the lighting of the forest in that areas in the brush will be naturally darker, and areas with heavy vegetation are lit correctly. Performance is a downright bitch, though. The early versions of ENB series were terribly optimized, and only the early versions work for the already taxing Crysis, so there's no way you'd be able to use it for anything other than renders.

As long as you keep the effects down to a minimum (SSAO is a prime example of a very FPS draining effect) you can usually keep a framerate above 60. Oh, and if you really want it in Crysis, try r_ssao 0 for a few extra FPS and a more accurate representation of ENB's SSAO.

SSAO is incredibly influenced by pixel count, moreso than pretty much any other effect, so with a modern card, one could probably just use a resolution like 800*600 (with enough AA to make it not really matter) to keep the framerate up if you really want to have SSAO in your games.
One good example of the ENB series, it's really hard to believe that's actually GTA San Andreas.

The advantage of this is that when in an area in which you cannot see the sky, you have the standard lighting and object reflections, but when the car is exposed to the sky, it produces a realistic reflection of the sky above, including clouds and all. Let's hope he continues this and develops a version for GTAIV. The lighting is already great, but it would look so much better with SSAO in addition to the exact shadows it already has.
what's it change in fallout 2?
what's it change in fallout 2?
Probably absolutely nothing. The earliest thing it supports is DX8, and then only by using a DX8 -> DX9 function wrapper (available on Boris' site for use with ENB series and DX8 games).
Just for kicks, Doom with bloom and color correction via Doomsday and ENBSeries. Edit: -Added 4 new comparison screenshots that better show off my config. -Added 1 non-comparison screenshot that looks frigging beautiful. (Unfortunately I didn't get a non-ENB screen.)
Does it work on Fallout 3? If it works on Oblivion it should work on Fallout 3 and Civilization 4, no?
Does it work on Fallout 3? I'm pretty damn sure it'll work in Fallout 3, it works perfectly in Oblivion. Now, don't think an older gamebyro engine game like Morrowind will benefit from it, but definitely Oblivion and Fallout 3.
*cough*
I believe this thread to be better because it is more specialized toward ENBSeries. That is a great thread for GTA:SA mods, though. Edit: -Updated ENBSeries Config and changed the recommended version of ENBSeries for COD2. The newer config fixes two errors I made with the actual values, tweaks the bloom a bit, and completely changes the color correction. The new color correction values really bring some color to the game. It quite simply looks amazing now. I'll throw some new screenshots up shortly. Edit: Click to expand... Here's a quick comparison made from the few screens I took during testing. It's not perfect, but it'll do for now.
Does it work with Ricochet.
