• NPC decisions in horror games-A rant

For those of you who've played F.E.A.R 2, you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about when I say that making characters make absolutely fucking terrible choices in a plot scene for the sake of horror alone is a really bad idea if your game is based on horror.
It's a shame you can't speak, because then when the NPCs say something like "Hey, let's all split up and go off alone!" for the fifth time, you could reply with something appropriate, like "That's a fucking stupid idea!"
If you're really so tight for time or money that you only have time to code a scene where you find the remains of your team after you go open a gate(I'm looking at you, FEAR)it's probably better to cut the scene in the first place and come up with something better. Were it real life, and you, a marine unit, were under attack by cannibals, if you found the half-eaten remains of that nervous private with acne who kept pissing himself minus his brain, it's not because the cannibals ate his brain, it's because he never fucking had one to begin with. The same applies in games. If you're going to code a scene, at least TRY to make the NPCs act like a sane person would in real life. If you're the player and you go down a long corridor with lights that spark out when you pass under them, you can get away with it, because you're the main character and you HAVE to go that way. My point is that game developers need to go outside once in a while and see how real people act, as opposed to how their personal puppets act. Horror isn't scary when supporting characters act like they have assburgers disease or are mentally retarded for the sole reason that the horror can take place. Honestly, if you see the freshly removed head of the guy who just went around the corridor spattered with blood roll out from the same corridor, you're not going to be scared, and by the same logic, you're not going to be scared when a scary little girl pops out of the same corridor and tries to eat your testicles. Because of this, I went through both FEAR games without jumping more than a few times. Why?
Sure it was scary the first time a monster I thought was dead jumped up and bit my ear off, but after six or seven times it had lost alot of it's sting, and I had long ago run out of ears.
TL;DR: Dialogue and plot sequences in horror games are terrible and so are the plots. /rant
It would be more interesting for npcs to have multiple paths for a game, like 5 different paths, that the randomly follow, It would make it more interesting replay game.
Technically Half-Life 2 wasn't that much of a horror game but when Alyx told me I had to go to Ravenholm I wanted to say "Fuck you, I could squeeze through the rubble but you want me to go through a whole fucking zombie infested mining town?".

But moving some rubble? thats just ridiculous [editline]05:12PM[/editline] fuck im late
I don't know about that. I think it reflects real life. When wierd shit starts happening around you, are you going to pussy out and avoid going into that dark corridor just 'cause you think there's something bad in there? [editline]8:17PM[/editline] Especially when your team-mates are listening in.

True. I mean, come on, some games are just so stupid. F.E.A.R again, here. Yeah, you're the First Ecounter Assault Recon thing but still, you're basically going through it all alone even thought you do have a squad.
EXACTLY MY POINT. Your squad are all killed off because they're retards.
because if everything went swelled... the game wouldn't be a game...
People just want more realistic things in games that is why the older games are doing better then the newer one's but yea you have a point OP if I see one of comrades on the ground with his brain gone I would be like "Fuck this" I will then turn around and proceed to the nearest exit.
For a highly trained military squad in FEAR it seems they've never heard of good ol' nades. Seriously, a head rolls from a corridor, throw a grenade so it bounces off the wall into the corridor. I mean, even monster's are not invincible to grenades (in most games).
Or just looking around the corner before you blindly rush into the area the disembodied head came from.
Yes, yes, but making choices like that requires something known as a brain.
I want NPCs that piss their pants when scared.
The day they get that is the day they get plot writers who know how the fuck a normal, sane person acts.
They need a game where you can terrify enemies.
They need a game where you can terrify enemies.
I think there needs to be more games where you are the monster or the bad guy. Like being the Zombie in Stubbs the Zombie or Alien in Alien vs Predator. Would be cool if some developers would make a game where you are some sort of mutation/monster living on a planet and humans would start to colonize it or trying to destroy it. Or maybe you're a test subject who has escaped and causing chaos and devouring everything in your wake.
They need a game where you can terrify enemies.
You can in Batman Arkham Asylum.
Or maybe you're a test subject who has escaped and causing chaos and devouring everything in your wake.
I Was An Atomic Mutant Prototype [editline]04:18PM[/editline] Alien campaign of the new AVP game as well.
Metro did that really good, mostly your in company of someone but sometimes you'r own you own.
You can in Batman Arkham Asylum.
Yeah well not very well, all you had to do was blow up a convieniently placed crack in the wall behind an enemy.
They need a game where you can terrify enemies.
In some kind of stealth game? By lord yes I'd love to snipe someone and watch his buddy panic
In some kind of stealth game? By lord yes I'd love to snipe someone and watch his buddy panic
This, instead of every enemy turning to you and firing with pin point accuracy on you.
Yeah, i mean, the start in FEAR for example, you squad is killed, if you were and officer, would you send him backup to avoid him getting killed too or say "lulz ur on ur one kthx"?
They need a game where you can terrify enemies.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/6200/ It's like The Sims but with ghosts. It's awesome.
Also there is a Game Cube game called Geist where you are a ghost(duh) and have to scare people to be able to posses them. It was pritty awesome.
Technically Half-Life 2 wasn't that much of a horror game but when Alyx told me I had to go to Ravenholm I wanted to say "Fuck you, I could squeeze through the rubble but you want me to go through a whole fucking zombie infested mining town?".
I didn't find anything scary from any Half Life game.
It's not all bad. Red from penumbra overture was a really well designed character. Also characters from Silent hill games are usually well planned and created. Altough the characters from my examples really dont get themselves in those situations that OP meant.
PENUMBRA! That game still gives me nightmares, specifically Black Plague and the Kennels.
