I'm from Singapore which is in South East Asia. Now in every multiplayer games, they have a ping checker or latency bar for online connection. Most often i try to play local servers here in Asia but sometimes there are only American, European or even Australian servers available. Every time I play on a servers not in Asia like in the US, I will end up with poor latency but it's understandable since I am far away from the host and thus I am prone to their auto-kick. But it makes me wonder why should servers kick players with high pings/latency.
People say players with high ping will cause the server to lag. But kicking a player with ping more than 200 is unfair. the only reasonable number is 400 and above. On some Team Fortress 2 servers, I once see a player from Brazil with his ping over 250 playing the game just fine and smoothly. However, Battlefield 2 multiplayer is COMPLETELY unplayable to a Singaporean player like me because EVERY FUCKING SERVERS NOT LOCATED IN ASIA auto kicks anyone who happens to have a ping of over 150.
If you think that anyone who have a high ping should be kicked out of the server immediately, then what about console players using XBOX live or PSN to play their online multiplayer game. Why is it a person from UK can play against a person in Australia through XBOX live without getting kicked for high latency when they play on consoles?
You might say Console games uses match making and not dedicated servers but some console games actually do uses a server
Console games never resorted to kicking high ping players, so why must PC game servers resort to this? If you ask me, the console versions Battlefield 3 and never kicks anyone who has a high ping unlike it's PC counterpart. Can you imagine being kicked out of a Halo game match all because you have a high ping.
I am saying auto-kicking high ping players is not fair. Is it their fault that their country have no local servers? We should stop implementing an autokick or auto disconnect for having a high ping.
Fair or not - It's down to the juristiction of the admins running the servers ultimately.
They could kick you for being white if they wanted to, and no one could really do anything about it.
I can't really play with a ping above 250, I start rewinding. But, Same as SCope, it's the admin's choice.
It's completely fair and up to the jurisdiction of the admins. Keep in mind that different games have different netcodes and in quite a number of them a high ping player can have a completely smooth game while bogging down everyone else.
In other games a <100 ping starts bogging up the hit detection of the offending player making them far harder to hit than otherwise.
Overall if you have a problem with there not being enough servers in your area, try to find likeminded others and make a community and make a server.

Because console games have
a) different server structure
b) don't give enough control to the admin to actually do the kicking.
c) are generally slower games with a lot more autoaim (due to movement controls) which makes ping less of an issue. Because everyone is slow, control latency is less important. And because everyone is slow autoaim allows you to negate some of that jittering.
I find it to be pretty fair. Its really annoying to play with high ping anyway.
You know what isn't fair? Kicking for slot reservation when you're already in.
If someone bought a server they have the right to kick you for anything they want
Honestly I don't see how you can play with a ping over 300, but really it is the admin's decision. They are either paying for the server to be hosted or hosting it themselves which can be a pain in the ass.

I hate slot reservation on servers fullstop. I go on the server, spend like an hour downloading all their stupid custom .wav files and then get kicked for slot reservation, pisses me off to no end.

at least, i think that's the command
I'll tell you what isn't fair.
Being forced to play with some retard trying to play the game on an N-gage in the middle of Siberia.
I swear some people don't even know what ping means, to them the internet must run on magical fairy dust and wishes.
In my opinion... No.
Players look for a server that they can play, and kicking for ping over 100 is absolute BS. I have gotten a message like that.
And when does having high ping actually affect the server? It doesn't. In my opinion kicking for high ping is complete BS

It doesn't affect the server, but it affects other players. If your ping is so high that you're teleporting across the map because it's taking so long for you to send your coordinates to the server, then it's impossible for other players to have a fair match against you.

Why is it you that contradicts me?
Anyway, at that point you find a different server, I mean I can't stand ping over 250. No one will stay if their ping is over 500.
Lots of tech illiterate server admins thinks that players with high pings will lag the server. It doesn't work like that at all.
Getting ping-kicked is annoying as fuck.
When the only ISP that services your area frequently gives lagspikes as bad as this:

it's kinda hard to do anything about it. And how does my ping cause everyone else to lag? That isn't how networking works at all.
I think it is perfectly fair, especially in games in which having competent players is vital, like Battlefield games, As a player with a high/unplayable ping is no use to the team, and is more often only a hindrance, how is it fair on the other players on the team if one of them is basically a free kill on legs? or is bound to crash important vehicles, or never hit a target?
Auto-ping kicks exist for a reason, that is one of them...

Isn't there an option to not download custom sounds in the multiplayer tab in options?

Yeah

Yep.

It should be switched on by default really, I was sick of downloading quake sounds and MLP sound clips before I knew about it.

It doesn't cause lag by itself, but it's almost impossible to shoot a player in an FPS when he's jumping all over the place. It's just no fun playing with someone with a high latency.
As for high pings, I say it's completely fair. Losing a Saxton hale match just because I couldn't kill the last player since he was warping around so much is a real pain in the ass.

Holy shit...I get a ping lower than you when I try a server in like, Zimbabwe

That excuse is ridiculous but many "pro" admins believe it to be true.

If a player in constantly teleporting due to their high ping. Kicking them should be acceptable. After all, it does affect the game for other players, and they may well be seeing the action pretty accurately compared to what you see them doing.
But automatically kicking all players with "high" pings? Stupid. Not all pings are exceptionally high. There are a few games that a ping > 100 will not affect how you play the game, or how others perceive you. While in other games that ping will cause problems. 100ms is a stupid limit to be kicked for. Something like 250ms is more reasonable as that is a quarter of a second after all.

I agree, crap like that isn't acceptable, but if they are teleporting that should be kickable.

That shouldn't really happen, should it? I'm no expert, but the server should not get coordinates from the client, but the opposite? The only one who should experience lag is the client itself, due to missmatch between servercoords and clientprediction.
It depends on the game. In an RTS or something like a flight simulator, lag shouldn't matter. But when I'm playing Generic Shooter #27, or Vehicle Combat Game #99, I don't want to deal with some guy in a jet fighter warping all over the sky because he's an Estonian playing on a west coast U.S. server.
I think it's complete bullshit.
All I want to do is be able to play on a server with a few of my friends in New Zealand and Wales online, but every single server I join has auto-kicked, so one (if not all) of us gets kicked.
It got so fucking annoying that I made a community and got a TF2 server and a Minecraft server. (Without autokick, obviously)

Lagm assively matters in an RTS game, because you get command lag in a server based game.
And you bog down the other player in a p2p game when his clients has to synch with you.
