• New Idea: Steam Nicknames!

I just randomly thought of this the other day and wanted to see what you guys would think: Steam Nicknames (obviously) gives you the options of giving your Steam friends nicknames. I shopped me a couple of screenshots, just to show how I think it would go. My best friend, Adorable Heavy (also known as GastricTank), has agreed to be my guinea pig. Let's say I want to give him a nickname because he changes his name too much. First, I'd click the arrow next to his name in chat, or right click his name on my friends list. Next, after clicking the Change Nickname button, this menu would pop up. Do as the directions say and enter their new nickname. After entering their name and clicking ok, their nickname would show up in parentheses behind their name. Of course, only you would be able see it. So, what do you guys think?
I've had an idea like this before, and yeah I agree very much.
Great idea. I've always been annoyed when my friends IRL change their steam names without telling me.
How would that work in online games using the steam community name? Would you see theyr name changed or the default one?
How would that work in online games using the steam community name? Would you see theyr name changed or the default one?
I suppose I should have thought more about that. I guess that even if it doesn't show nicknames in-game, it will still show the person is a friend. If you care that much, you can look for their name on your friends list and see their nickname there.
How would that work in online games using the steam community name? Would you see theyr name changed or the default one?
it should show up as "Adorable Heavy (GastricTank)", but only for you
I would have chosen (ANNOYING FUCKER)

Good idea.
That's the joy of it, you can call your friend whatever you want and they'll never know.
That's a nice idea, but the only real reason for implementing it would be so you won't get confused when they change their name. BUT there's already a feature for that - "View Aliases"...

Yeah, this is really overdue. I've been needing this for years. Have you emailed Valve or posted in their forum somewhere that they might have a chance of seeing it?
I approve of this idea!
Send it to Gabe Newell
I think the original name should be in the Parentheses.

Anyone have the e-mail address? I don't know it. [editline]24th December 2010[/editline]
I think the original name should be in the Parentheses.
I guess they can add preferences that let you edit certain properties, like that one.
So this would stay if they changed their name? If so, this sounds great.
I would find it very useful to tag my "friends" so I know who is who. I already do it on skype, would be nice if I could do it on steam

That would be sweet as shit but I don't think posting on FP is gonna do anything, you should post in SPUF, as awful as that might be
I think it'd be better to have it be in front, so it doesn't get cut off if they have a long name.
i want closing chats with esc back
That would be sweet as shit but I don't think posting on FP is gonna do anything, you should post in SPUF, as awful as that might be
I have a SPUF account, but haven't ever posted. What section should I put it so I don't get banned. Even thought that would be a good thing.
There we go, I posted it in the "Steam Community Discussion" section.

My buddies will know why someone named "WE HAD TO KILL STEINER" is messaging them.
Just posting to say I approve
I would very much love this, considering all of the chat shenanigans we do in our group chat.
Would love this alot. I have so many friends that I consistently lose track of who they are because they change their name and picture SO GODDAMN MUCH.
