Heroic deaths and the dead of heroes. (Assume Spoilers)

I've been trying to think about all the games I have played in which either the protagonist, or a character linked to him dies heroically, and out of all the games I played, only a few of them actually did it right in my opinion.
I haven't played many of the old classics such as Max Pain, and I would say the character development in many games I have played has only been so-so. This got me thinking; how do game developers make a hero, or a character that the player gravitates to?
What specific traits makes them seem special? For me, a 'badass' character like the ones in Gears of War, the previous two MW games, Army of Two and God of War, just seem too over the top and shallow. I find it hard to believe someone like that could actually exist.
I know their characters are exaggerated, just as they would be in a movie, but for some reason it just removes me from the experience. This is especially the case when a character dies. If a badass character dies, I would either think "good", or not have a reaction at all. When a well developed character dies, I have more of a reaction like "oh no" or "shit" and have a felling of loss.
Whats worse is that some developers take moderately developed characters and send them to oblivion on a whim. For instance; At the end of Halo 3: The death of Ashley Keys and Sgt. Johnson.
While many of you may not care about Ashley, Johnson had been with this story arc since the beginning. His death had hardly any impact at all.
I'm looking for your input about what makes a good heroic character, and what makes a suitable end for said character.
tldr;
Post what you thought were the best characters you could relate to, and why you related to them. Also, what gave their death/departure the most impact? Post vids/pics if you want.

Trask Ulgo. :patriot:
He died for the Republic and his sacrifice saved the galaxy.
We'll remember you always Trask.

This X10000000000000
Also captain price at the end of modern warfare 2, I was thinking "No don't die :c" the whole time.
But of course this post is going to get boxed to hell because of Facepunches MW2 hating :bandwagon:.
The Boss. Probably the most tragic death ever. When I beat her I was all like "You're not seriously going to make me-?"
Then I learnt the real reason you were sent there and I felt like a douchebag. :

Darth Bandon killed him on the Endar Spire. Darth Bandon comes back later and brags about it before you kill him.

Boxes because Price doesn't die in MW2.
Garrus, Legion, and Tali all died on me in my first Mass Effect 2 ending.
I also have shed a tear for every single Imperial Guardsmen I've ever lost. Goddamned heroes, all of them.
In WaW at the end You don't die exactly but you get shot and plant the soviet flag, and you feel badass.

GamesWorkshop keeps a gallon jug handy for me
Banon from WiC. He was an ass, but died like a hero.
The Boy in I Wanna Be The Guy. Seriously, I've shed a manly tear for that boy's plight. He just wants to surpass his father, not be impaled on spikes within a second of his journey and explode everywhere.

Yeah. He was shown off as a bastard, but his death was badass, despite me rooting for the soviets.
[sp]Bill.[/sp]
According to the wiki, he died trying to run the generator to save everyone else.

And who is Ashley Keys? Must mean Miranda, right?

The death of [sp]Bill[/sp] was horrible. I went into the room where he was and went "Really Valve? Really? You killed a good character loved by many by dumping his body into a room? No story whatsoever other than "yeah he turned the generator on and then died".
Valve I am dissapoint. :saddowns:
When Heathers father(Harry Mason)was [sp]found dead[/sp] in Silent Hill 3. He killed the evil god, but had to pay dearly for it.
William in Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood...

You do get to know why he acted that way, the story leading up to that point (especially with the call to his family) were really wrenching. He saw the way he's acted at the end as well. So yes, he died a hero's death without flaws. :patriot:

I remember reading a huge analysis of Banon from the WiC forums.
Basically, a developer of the game saw the analysis, shat bricks, and said that's exactly what they intended when designing Banon.

Was a pretty bad way to show it. They couldnt get his voice actor, alright, thats a valid reason for it.
At least give him some ingame heroic demise, not just a prop on the ground.
Well Roman dies in gta4 if you pick a certain choice. I thought that was one of the worst losses in a video game.
