Finished my latest rig over Christmas and as such, re-downloaded all my steam games and bought and downloaded a couple of others including Left 4 Dead and Alien swarm. I managed to play all the games fine bar the two mentioned, where upon launching I get an error reading 'failed to create D3D device'. I initially tried running in safe mode then with DX8 in launch commands, then validating the game cache, but to no avail.
I have an ATI Sapphire HD 4870 with the latest drivers, CCC and DX11 installed.
Has anyone else experienced this problem or know of a fix? It frustrates me that I've paid for a £7 game which won't launch.

my friend had same problem but he has hd 5730
he added to launch options this -w 1360 -h 768 (it is his native resolution) and this helped him
