Heroes Of Might And Magic III (or HoMM3 for short) is a turn based strategy game developed by New World Computing and published by 3DO in 1999, Heroes III is widely acclaimed as the best game in the series.
Now, some Wiki copy-pasta on gameplay:
Gameplay consists of strategic exploration on the world map and tactical turn-based combat. As with the series in general, the player controls a number of "heroes" who act as generals and command troops comprising various types of creatures inspired by myth and legend. The player can complete or "win" a map by completing the objectives set out by the creator of the map. Objectives may include conquering all the towns in the map, gathering a set amount of resources, or piecing together a puzzle to find the Grail artifact. If a player loses all their heroes and towns, they will lose the game.
The game has 8 (9 with the Armageddon's Blade expansion pack.) starting towns. The towns are:
Castle: Castle is mostly made up of medieval humans, with the addition of mythological griffins and divine angels. The town itself looks like a castle.

Dungeon: Dungeon's army is made up of monsters that live in underground caves. As you can imagine it's town is very cave like.

Necropolis: Necropolis is a ghost town of the undead.

Stronghold: Stronghold's populated with brutish, tribal creatures associated with barbarism. The town has a desert theme to it.

Conflux: Conflux is added with the Armageddon's Blade expansion pack. The town is host to mostly elementals.

Two official expansion packs were released for Heroes III, here's some Wiki copy-pasta about them:
The first expansion, Armageddon's Blade, introduced a ninth town alignment, the Conflux; a random scenario generator, a variety of new creatures, heroes, and structures; and six new playable campaigns.
The second expansion, The Shadow of Death, was a standalone expansion that included Restoration of Erathia and added seven new playable campaigns and a variety of new artifacts, including Combination Artifacts. Combination Artifacts were extremely powerful items assembled by collecting a specific set of lesser artifacts.
And now, some gameplay screens.

I hated that fucking dragon slayer level, you march in there with your huge-ass army after conquering the first part of the map, and then bam, fucking battles with 30 green dragons each are just like, "fuck you, and your hopes too."
I loved that god damn game.
I loved the game but I remember every time I played hotseat me and my friends would get bored before even attacking each other, there were always overpowered enemies between each other
HoMM 3 is amazing. I might go and play it right now.
Also, how can you not include anything in the OP about the Wake of Gods expansion? It's a free, unofficial fan-made expansion pack that adds so much new content, it makes me want to call it HoMM 3.5. I mean...
-Level 8 monsters
-A bunch of new monsters like ghosts, sylvan centaurs, metamorphs.......
-Monsters in your party can level up and gain new abilities, like no enemy retaliation or strike-and-return. They also get more powerful as they level up.
-Lots of new landmarks and things to visit on the world map
-Some skills and units have been rebalanced to make them more useful
-Heroes can learn additional skills
-Lots of interesting map options to spice things up, like creatures in your army growing by 4% every day, up to 10,000 units, or changing short-distance moving creatures to long-distance moving ones and vise versa, or changing the Conflux town into a Neutral creature town.
-All the changes are optional, so you get to decide just how many changes you really want in place.
-Works with the random map generator from the official expansions! It really added a lot of life to HoMM3 for me.
WHY THE HELL HAVEN'T YOU DOWNLOADED IT YET

I think Castle has a bit over powered units.
Good times with this game.... Necropolis vampire lords were the shit
This game saved me from boredom for the first half of this year.
I got the fifth one since i've got a new computer
it's not really the same
I've been thinking about getting this game on Gog. But I'm not sure if I should get this first, or the Might and Magic 1-6 pack.
I'm still kind of unsure how the HoMM games play. Is it like Fire Emblem? (If you're familiar with it) Do you move your units around on a map and attack the other "team" while using the environment to your advantage? I can't really tell from the screenshots, but it looks like the map (if it's even a map) is really small, and that unit movement doesn't really occur.
HoM&M3 is god-tier
Fortress is probably the weakest town. =/ Dragon flies and wyverns are great for pestering enemies, but they get killed off so easily. The gorgons' death stare is pretty nice, and the basilisks turning enemies to stone, but every unit from that town just seems so weak compared to other creatures of the same level.
WoG buffs dragon flies a bit though. If they can level up enough, they gain the ability to cast dispel and then weakness on whatever enemy they attack, in addition to strike-and-return + no enemy retaliation. Enemies still pretty much target them over everything else, but they get pretty awesome if you can keep them alive long enough.
Conflux units are also kinda weak, but not so bad. Pixies have gotta be the worst level 1 units though. I mean, they have 1HP each! It's just embarrassing.
I hate the Blind spell with a fiery passion. What's worse is when the enemies have got a bunch of war unicorns blinding you AND the hero just loves to cast blind throughout a battle. Better hope you mastered some kinda magic that'll let you cast cure over your whole army.
And why can't there be a WoG expansion for HoMM 4? I think 3 was a lot better. It felt more refined and fleshed out, but 4 still had some merits. It could really benefit from the WoG treatment. I remember once that a friend and I spent a month or so playing on and off on the one XL map that comes with 4. It got pretty extreme. I had a hero from the Might town who ended up pretty well outclassing every creature in the game.
I can really ramble 'bout some HoMM

You goto your towns and build buildings to get units and add them to your heroes party. You than are a guy on a horse roaming around the map, you can attack lone monsters or other heroes. When you do, you will get something like this:

from this screen you will use your units to move around this small battle field, fighting the units you attacked.
Best HoMM game ever (and that means it's really awesome). And it's even more awesome when you play in hot-seat and you both have huge armies.
Also Necropolis owns everything (huge amounts of skeletons, extremely powerfull vampires, great Liches and the Death Knights do enourmous damage with some luck).
Yeah about the skeletons... I remember getting like 2000 one time because of necromancy and huge numbers of pixies that I kept finding.
There would be like 500 pixies... I would easily kill them and then get like 100 skeletons every single time.

Yeah, I played a huge hotseat match once and got up to 22k skeletons (and a shitload of all the other troops, but none of the others went over 2k). Sadly they didn't last very long as the other guy had a few hundred Arch Devils. I still beat him in the end though, but damn that was a close fight (he lost everything and I had only a few vampires and liches left).
Hoho this game. I remember when i played it when i was 8. I only had the Chinese one, so i didnt know what they were saying, but it was still fun.
One of my favourite games to play when I was younger! :3:
This game is very good, but I like Heroes 2 more becaurse it's my childhood game. <3
Whats the difference between this or Heroes 5.
I love this game. :buddy:

Heroes 3 has a dark and gothic style, while Heroes 5 has a more cartoony style (and of course H3 is 2D and H5 is 3D). Gameplay is similar, but H3 complete has a lot more content. Personaly I prefer the units and factions in H3 too (and there are more of them in H3).
So yeah, gameplay is pretty similar, but H3 has way more content, cities, monsters, spells and all that (and I prefer H3's art style, but that's just a personal opinion).
For me, the random map generator is about 75% of HoMM3's advantage over the other games. I've never been too interested in the campaigns or even scenarios, but I love me some random maps.
The only thing I don't like about random maps is that while they start out fun, letting you get a lot of interesting exploring done at the beginning, they tend to end up as a fetch quest to hunt down every last enemy hero who's loose on the map with like, one goblin hanging out near some town without a fort. When the AI players are losing, they just buy a shitload of heroes to spread out over the map and annoy the shit out of you. I'd like to play an XL map, but I don't think I would unless the full 8 players are involved. Actually, that just might be a good idea.
I could never get the random map thing to work. It would just tell me no random maps were available.
I was never into this game, I bought Homm 5, I liked it a lot. Luckely I got Homm3 free in a gamemagazine a long time ago. Maybe I should reinstall this.
Castle, necropolis and Rampart are absolutely the best factions. The weakest one is probably the dungeon or fortress. The stronghold's goblins are pretty weak, but the other units are good enough to make it an okay faction. The other factions are so-so.
I absolutely love the Rampart, though. Dragons, elves, dwarves... Man, that was fun.

I don't think Dungeon is too bad. The harpy hags will piss people off like nothing else, and they've got the black dragons that're immune to all magic, plus two long-range units. Couple that with the ability to have a level 5 mage guild, mana vortex, and a portal of summoning and you can have a pretty strong hero.
It's especially good with WoG, because black dragons can be upgraded to darkness dragons, using the same strike-and-return and no enemy retaliation as the harpy hags. Plus, if they're leveled up enough, they're able to receive friendly spells while still being completely immune to the harmful ones.
Lost my fucking copy when I moved with family years ago, god damn... I lost about 8 games in that move because we were in a rush and boxes weren't labeled right.
Did someone say it was on GOG?! I'm all over that bitch.

Then I know what to get, then.
This reminds me of Dominions 3
One of my favorite games of all time.
I always liked trapping the CPU player on an island, then stocking up my team with hundreds of the best creatures.
