What is it?
Risen is a single-player fantasy-themed action role-playing game under development by the German company Piranha Bytes, and published by Deep Silver. Piranha Bytes itself is developing the Windows version, due to be released on October 2, 2009. The Xbox 360 port has been outsourced to an experienced console team under the close supervision of Piranha Bytes. IGN states that the North American release date of the Xbox 360 port has been delayed to "early 2010".
Risen is basically the spiritual successor to the Gothic series. One of it's strong features is really in-depth crafting and alchemy features. It's open world but the map isn't huge and has some areas that are locked until you're a higher level. Gothic was pretty bad, In my opinion. Well, three was.
Fehler beim Download! Zur Zeit sind alle Downloadsessions besetzt What does this mean?
Tis German for : Ummm, something like Failed to Download, all downloads are being held at this time. I am not a German expert. Just learning the language still.
I heard from people who have already played it that it has very nice performance and no bugs or crashes
What of the character customisation?
What of the character customisation?
I think you have a set character with customizable armor, etc. but don't quote me on this. Although in the screenshots the characters look a bit different.
The hell is Risen? Oh... the hell is Gothic?
Save your money buy Dragon Age instead, it is going to be a next gen neverwinter nights (shy of multiplayer)
Save your money buy Dragon Age instead, it is going to be a next gen neverwinter nights (shy of multiplayer)
Except Dragon Age doesnt come out for at least another month.
Just finished the demo, it's kinda short but gives you a good feel of the game. So far it's pretty well optimized and I didn't find any bugs besides small, graphical ones. Uploading some screenshots. Also no character customization besides material things and maybe you can get a haircut later. [editline]07:00PM[/editline]
Save your money buy Dragon Age instead, it is going to be a next gen neverwinter nights (shy of multiplayer)
Meh, from what I've seen so far Dragon Age looks pretty boring, but then again Bioware makes amazing games so I'll wait 'till it actually comes out.
So far the demo is telling me that the combat isn't great. It looks surprisingly deep for a game in this day and age and little things like foraging for ingredients are appealing, but it comes crashing down in fights. The criteria for counter attacking seems to need trial and error to figure out, but all trial and error showed me is that it doesn't work. Enemy attacks have no lead-in animation (and no way of telling whether they're going to stop attacking, perform a combo or dodge), so watching them closely doesn't help me at all. Attacking feels clunky and it's rather unfair that gnomes of all creatures are able to dart out of your way immediately for several consecutive strikes. The hero on the other hand moves like a snail and doesn't appear to have any random or input based damage avoidance abilities. Directional attacking and a less strict blocking system would be great, but this comes out tomorrow.
What's this game like? Open RPG?

You also can't block some attacks so that's confusing. They could always patch that though. I do love the crafting though, seems like that's going to be a very strong feature. Ugh, I fucking hated Gothic 3. The screenshots made it looks so awesome, but it really wasn't in my opinion. However, I'll try this when I get a chance.
Pretty mediocre. Lousy combat, lousy voice work, extremely muddy graphics and horrid use of bloom, okay crafting system, and retarded AI. So basically, it's about as good as the Gothic series. Man, we're never going to get a truly good open world RPG in the same vein as Oblivion(which wasn't that great either but atleast it was fun, if you avoided oblivion gates).

Little note, after a recent dispute in Bethesda some of the Oblivion team left the game a join the gothic crew. Probably because they were pissed of with tomb raid.... i mean WET. All that game ever made you do was "Do a backflip and shoot this guy" "Cool move make the game worth buying!" God i hate this new attitude on games, make it a brif morsel of somethhing that looks cool, add fancy graphics and volla number one hit title. Anyways like i was saying, much of the elder scrolls team has now moved on to join gothic, so we might get to see some of that little bethesda touch that much of their games have, this could be good yet.

They PUBLISHED IT.
Well Risen comes out today so I'll get to work on making this a Megathread, if one of the mods could change the name that'd be great.
I have no hope for Risen. Gothic is a shit series.
Played the full russian version. There is no character customization. You get only to equip armor that you can rarely even get. Quests are tedious to do because most of the time you have no idea how to do or where to go. I find combat fun when 1v1 only. When you go against two or more, it becomes not fun. Without a shield blocking some animals is impossible, which sucks. Having totally no way of teleporting is awful too. A lot of people hated oblivion's fast travel, but I loved it, and this game having no fast travel at all just sucks. You simply run from one settlement to another all the time.
Would you say it's kind of open world?
Would you say it's kind of open world?
It's on an island. It's not fully open like oblivion, but yes, kinda open it is. No areas are locked(minus some that can be opened only with a spell for larger levels)
I'm stuck in the full game, was happily doing jobs for the Bandits, and accidentally went to Volcano keep rather than Harbour town, got snapped up and conscripted into the Inquisition. Now I'm trying to do the various tests, and am stuck on proving who killed Helmar, completing Master Ignatius' challenge, and finding all the "recipes" for the basic scrolls
I played the demo a bit, and so far it didn't really look a like a game to actively play to me. Instead I'd play it when I'm pretty bored or have to wait for something else.
It was pretty fun, but the combat is very tough. Most mobs kill you if they get around three or four hits in, the quests require thinking by yourself, loads of things to do, [sp](Go to the monastery and help the inquisition, do stuff in the harbor city, just go around hunting for treasure, ect.)[/sp], getting new skills and magic spells and stuff requires a nice dose of effort, stuff like that. Not the best game around, but it's a fun RPG none the less, and it's pretty.

Directional attacking comes with sword skill level 2. (Playing the retail version) Armor is hard to get, and will cost you lots of gold too, but trust me it's worth it.
I have played it for a while (full version) and I think it's pretty okay. I got terribly frustrated though at the farm (beginning) because I didn't exactly know where the cave to the wolves were so I went on and on fighting some REALLY tough wolves somewhere else. Either way, I think the game is badly optimized but it's definitely playable. The animations for your main character is extremely bad however all the other characters/creatures have quite good ones. The speech/conversations feel like they are being read directly from text. At least that is what your main character is telling me.
I played it and I have to say that I love it. It feels a bit like the old Gothic games (Gothic 1 and 2) which is awesome. The world is really great. If you walk around and explore the world you will often find some neat stuff hiding behind waterfalls, in dungeons and even in the ground (you should always have a shovel with you). However, I think the story could have been better and the end fight was too easy. If you like the old Gothic games (only Gothic 1 + 2, Gothic 3 was not that good even with the fan patches) you should give this one a try.
A lot of people hated oblivion's fast travel, but I loved it, and this game having no fast travel at all just sucks.
