It goes against the natural laws of motion and can leave the game stumbling. To use a popular example, Halo set the standard for all subsequent console shooters. Despite Halo Wars showing that an RTS on console could work, it hardly caused a flood of console-RTS games. Poised on the precipice of a black-coloured mesa, Half-life 2: Wars – a mod for Half-life 2 – is similarly set to make the leap across the genre canyon and into the fog of war. The multiplayer beta release of HL2W comes featured with three game modes and two factions – the Combine and Antlions. Annihilation is your typical deathmatch scenario – not much to report on that front. Anyone who enjoys a leisurely session of stealing flags from the porches of retired people will be disappointed in the misleadingly named Capture the Flag; the flow of action is more akin to a King of the Hill-style match. Finally, Overrun is similar to a tower-defence game, where players are tasked to defend their base against endless waves of Antlions. Any of the game modes can be played against rudimentary AI, but like any multiplayer game it's far more engaging to play against fellow meatsacks. Good luck finding an opponent, however, because players are rarer than an HL2: Episode 3 screenshot. Your best bet is to gather some like-minded buddies for a jam session, allowing all of you to enjoy the slight lag, courtesy of the single overseas server. From an RTS point of view, the latest Source engine powering HL2W is still a looker. When the action gets hot, you'll be treated with all manner of bullet tracers and Antlion spitballs. The units are wonderfully animated, with Antlion limbs hurled realistically when dismembered in the face of a Combine Shotgunner. The main visual criticism is that the maps look a bit bland; there are only so many shades of brown before it becomes difficult to distinguish between the terrain and the products of a horrified Combine soldier about to be skewered by an Antlion. I should stress that the mod is still in beta and as such, isn't fully featured yet. Unit variety is sorely lacking and is compounded by the fact that the beta only allows you to play as the Combine in Overrun; all other matches are Antlions vs. Antlions. Consequently, matches are reminiscent of Antlion groupies fighting about whose Queen looks more like Michael Jackson. Scratchers and hair-pullers are upfront, while water bottle and hairbrush throwers hang back. Generally, the player who can amass the most grou- err... Antlions... in the shortest amount of time will find fame and glory. HL2W continues to be developed and balanced, and the mod team promise the addition of a third “Resistance” faction soon, as well as making the Combine playable in all game modes. As it stands now, the mod is pretty average but has built a solid foundation to make a high quality RTS set in a rich universe. Wipe the blood off your pincers and wrench the mod from the GON content servers (for free) and see what you think.
Source: http://games.on.net/article/11225/The_Mod_Squad_-_Half_Life_2_Wars
I used to play this.. Was pretty fun until I realised I missed Episode 2 models. Then I bought episode 2. :saddowns:
Just waiting on the head fraction and were good to go.
I can never connect to any servers. :saddowns:
for another RTS mod there's one called Overwatch: one team is all player rebels and the other is the Overwatch which is just one person controlling AI combine soldiers http://www.moddb.com/mods/overwatch
Combine Master.
Combine Master.
Exactly what i thought. A shame zombie master is sort of dead these days. Was my favorite mod. Now it's filled with those dumb RPG 24/ 7 REDQUEEN servers. :sigh:
They're developing zombie master 2 if you didn't know. You will be able to hit zombies with a rolling pin.
