Hello all! i recently toyed with the idea of getting a 3DS purely for the older game releases on cartridge and virtual store but then decided it would be a waste of money to pay about £130 new just to play some games i can emulate on my PC for free. i decided to look up some alternatives online and found you can emulate lot on a PSP. most sites i looked at were full of downloads without giving any info so I'm not sure of it yet. what can be done with a PSP (not just game related) and how easily is it done, also what alternatives could there be for classic gaming on the go.
TL;DR PSP, what is it capable of?
Hacking the PSP is ludiciously easy these days. Put file on card. Run file. Done, you can now run unsigned code, whee.
You can emulate everything up to the N64, which isn't playable at all. PS1 games can be converted to eboots and played though.

You can also use an old DS and a flash cart to emulate.

This is all you need to know really. PSP is great for hand held emulation if you can stomach the shitty battery life.
With the downfall of Megaupload, a ton of files needed to hack a PSP are insanely hard to find.
It is insanely easy to get started with emulating on the PSP. I was always turned away from it because I would have needed to buy a Pandora battery but now you just throw a few files onto the memory stick and you are good to go.
The easiest games to emulate are NES, SNES, Genesis, Gameboy Colour/advanced and so on. The hardest is PS1 games because not only are they huge, but there is a ton of work to do before a PS1 game can be turned into an eboot. You can always scour for eboots that people have already made however. Also, I would completely ignore N64 games if I were you because there are probably a grand total of five N64 games that run at more than 10fps on a psp. Also, if you like audio in your N64 games you can forget about that with a PSP.
Can you do the same thing with a Vita or hasn't it been cracked yet?

PSP emulates anything up to PS1 (excl. N64) very well though so it's a better system for doing that stuff

A ton of work? It takes an eboot converter and all but ten to fifteen minutes of your time...
I beat FF7 on the PSP and it was very comfortable, ran at good framerates and without glitches even with the screen being a wee bit small (although mgs ran slowly)
Can you just buy any old PSP with any firmware installed or is that still a barrier?
I've had mine since release, CFW took a while to get where it is now but as Richy says it's usually as simple as a software install now.
Somewhat glad I bought mine even if it was full retail price.
I have a white 1000 I've held onto, I might look into bootkicking it for reasons.
I'm not too sure if the battery on it works well.

Are you sure it's an actual battery or a fake? Fakes are the ones with the tiny circuit board on top instead of across the whole back of the battery.
Mine is fake and lasts about 2 hours without the charger.
Mine has the battery it came with, I considered turning it into a pandora battery but I didn't want to risk it.
Also it's a first edition white PSP, not a "1001" (the one with a chip that made some older methods of installing custom Firmware impossible).

Does anyone nkow if there is a working IR remote for the PSP?All the ones I find are outdated.

No, there's not. It takes 10 minutes, tops, to convert each iso.

Not sure about the Go or whatever, but everything else is software crackable now.

The last number doesn't refer to anything except the region afaik. Pretty sure they're otherwise identical.
