It's true that bunnyhopping has always been an engine exploit, sometimes used in deathmatch and teamplay modes to gain an advantage over other players, to be harder to hit and gain access to key areas quickly.
However, I like to see bunnyhopping as a skill, not an exploit. There's entire communities built around these exploits, with players competing to be faster and faster in the world of jumping.

However, everywhere I look outside of these communities, bunnyhopping is dying. Games are focusing less on movement and more on things like "sprint" and, in the case of Mirror's Edge, moves which can be executed with a simple button combination. No skill required.
I see movement as an integral part of a game, and freedom of movement being important. The freedom to jump and move around as I please, and not be hindered by code specifically to destroy bunnyhopping and this freedom. Thankfully, Valve has perserved this in some way: they revoked their Counter-Strike update that would have killed a very important kreedz (movement-based gameplay) technique, and in Counter-Strike: Source, they have a command to enable bunnyhopping (sv_bunnyhopping 1)

But everywhere else, skill-based movement is dead. Partially because of an unfair advantage ("That guy is fucking bunnyhopping everywhere! I can't get a shot on him!") and partially because, well, it's unrealistic. But aren't games supposed to be about what you can't do in real life? Why not preserve this technique? Why not preserve movement-based gameplay? Some might not care for it, sure, but I've played Kreedz Climbing for five years, and continue to play it everyday. It's my favorite game, and it makes me sad to know that in a few years, movement as I knew it will be dead

I'm not advocating bunnyhopping as a fair method in traditional gameplay, I'm advocating bunnyhopping and "movement based gameplay" as a genre in video games.
...because of an unfair advantage ("That guy is...
That's why.
I remember co-oping Halo 2 at a friends, and we just randomly turned on each other, and he was getting really pissed off because he couldn't kill me. Because I was bunnyhopping.
It may take skill, but it's just an irritatingly cheap tactic to be honest.
It looks silly.

Thank God
Skill is skill, no matter whether it's applied in aiming or movement.
Skill is skill, no matter whether it's applied in aiming or movement.
This, just because you can't do it doesn't mean it's an exploit, Can you aim like an esports pro? No? That must be exploiting too then.
This, just because you can't do it doesn't mean it's an exploit, Can you aim like an esports pro? No? That must be exploiting too then.
If it wasn't an exploit then explain to me why they disabled it and you need commands and/or mods to activate it.
This, just because you can't do it doesn't mean it's an exploit, Can you aim like an esports pro? No? That must be exploiting too then.
Can't you get under the map like me and shoot players from below ? No ? That's skill, baby.
People bitched.
I really hate the word "Skill" when you're talking about gaming.
I imagine that most shooter designers didn't appreciate players making their laboriously crafted mercenaries in carefully designed worlds filled with death and despair skip from place to place like cheery schoolgirls.
I really hate the word "Skill" when you're talking about gaming.
skill (n.) - capacity to do something well; technique, ability. Skills are usually acquired or learned, as opposed to abilities, which are often thought of as innate.
Is skill not the appropriate word here?
Can't you get under the map like me and shoot players from below ? No ? That's skill, baby.
Bunnyhopping and map-bugging are both exploits, yes. However, did an entire community come out and bitch when these map exploits were threatened to be removed? No? That's the difference, then.
I really hate the word "Skill" when you're talking about gaming.
because you're casual and play for fun right
Ugh those videos are making me sick.
Ain't that just hitting space?
Skill, haha sure, keep thinking that.
I'm pretty sure the guy in that first video just has parkinsons.
Ain't that just hitting space?
Skill, haha sure, keep thinking that.
What you say would be likened to one that, honestly, doesn't know what they're talking about.
Ain't that just hitting space?

It's actually very hard. Tried to learn how to do it and failed miserably.
Sure, because to bez truz bunayhopprz yu havt o fil ur jamping!!!!!
Nah I'm just kidding here. But it seemed pretty easy when i tried.
Bunnyhopping should only be used in speedruns imo.
There's having a advantage due to being a better player and then there's those guys hurtling around the map to fast to hit in CSS
And how is bunnyhopping a skill, its pretty goddamn easy to get the hang of.
because you're casual and play for fun right
I didn't know there were any other reasons to play video games besides to have fun
I love bunnyhopping. :v:
But I only knew how to do it back in 2005...
It's fun IMO.
Also, kiddies in Black Ops say bunnyhopping is "trying to dodge bullets".
It makes me rage.
because you're casual and play for fun right
No, clearly I play videogames so I can whine about people who bounce around the map too fast for me to hit them.
Bunnyhopping is just tedious and annoying. I do it in Painkiller because it lets me move way faster, but I'd be a lot happier if I could just move at bunnyhopping speed while running around on foot.
because you're casual and play for fun right
I play games for fun, I dont give a shit if some people find a game im playing casual, I find it fun, and thats all that matters.
And how is bunnyhopping a skill, its pretty goddamn easy to get the hang of.
It's quite difficult to perform correctly and master, in the appropriate games.
Take a look at this list. If it's easy, I'm sure beating any one of these will be a cakewalk, right?
As for your aforementioned post, yes. Someone finally gets it. I'm not advocating continuously using bunnyhopping to gain an advantage over players (the same way someone uses map exploits to), I'm advocating it's preservation along with the entire concept of movement based gameplay. "Movement" should become a genre in video games, as that's what these communities are built around.
