What is this?
Golden sun is a series of turn based JRPGs by Camelot software planning, who are not really known for anything else besides mario sports spinoffs. It takes place in the fictional world of Weyard, which is loosely geographically based off of earth.
What is it about?
Wiki Dump!
The world of Weyard is a world modeled off the ancient real-world view of the Flat Earth, the view that the shape of the world is a flat disk-like plane where there is a clearly defined edge dropping into the abyss below. The oceans of the world endlessly flow over the edge of the world's entire perimeter, and all points along the perimeter where the water of the world falls into the abyss below is collectively known as Gaia Falls. To the denizens of modern-day Weyard that live near Gaia Falls, it is an as-of-yet-unsolved mystery how it is that the world's waters never "run out".
All matter on Weyard, living or inanimate and including humanity itself, is comprised of any combination of the four elemental building blocks of reality, which are modeled off the four Greek Classical Elements: Venus, the element of earth, ground, and plantlife; Mars, the element of fire and heat; Jupiter, the element of air and electricity; and Mercury, the element of water and the cold. An individual that has the ability to manipulate at least one of these elements from their surrounding environment using a mental, spiritual power is classifiable as an Adept of that element, and the act of elemental manipulation, which resembles magical sorcery, is known as using Psynergy of that element. While it seems all lifeforms on Weyard are innately aligned with a given element and all sapient and/or sentient lifeforms among them have the potential to manipulate that element with Psynergy, the ability to do so is typically not developed within most individuals; an individual is only truly able to employ Psynergy at will once special circumstances have been met, the most typical of which is either prolonged exposure or sudden contact with a rare, rocky substance called Psynergy Stone, the existence of which is generally unknown by the world at large by the start of Golden Sun.
Ages before the start of Golden Sun, Weyard was a much different place; taking residence upon the lands of the world were thriving civilizations and clans based on each of the four elements. This was made possible by a great power named Alchemy, which is apparently similar to Psynergy, but is much more powerful in that all four of the building blocks of reality are manipulated simultaneously as one rather than just a single element at a time. Alchemy could allow for fantastic effects, such as the transmutation of lead into solid gold, and the ability to thwart death itself.
Alchemy, being what fueled the rise of civilization in this era, would similarly fuel the rise of untold strife, however. Mankind's dreams of endless riches, and then of eternal life, eventually turned to dreams of dominion over all that lived, and aspirations of conquest. The world became the stage for a great conflict, as the nations abused the power of Alchemy to raise armies and wage war against each other. The world was nearly torn apart, but was ultimately saved from its own denizens by the bravery of a few wise men: They sealed away the power of Alchemy out of the reach of the nations of the world of Weyard, and the wars subsided. The secrets to Alchemy were hidden within a dungeon-like shrine named Sol Sanctum, constructed within Mt. Aleph at the western part of the modern-day north-central continent of Angara, where they would remain outside of public knowledge and reach for the ages to come. By the time of Golden Sun, a village named Vale had been founded at the foot of Mt. Aleph. The residents of the village were all Adepts to varying degrees, and they recognized it was due to having lived life in the proximity of a large Psynergy Stone formation near the foot of the mountain, a structure they had adopted as a village monument. Holding their power to be a blessing and gift by gods and by Mt. Aleph, the Valeans had made it their tradition to stand guard over the entrance to Sol Sanctum and to refrain from entering it freely so as to preserve the shrine's sanctity (though they remained unaware of the true secrets locked deep within the shrine). Believing that Psynergy was a craft unique to Vale, the villagers also made it a law never to reveal Psynergy to any visitors from the outside world.
What's unique about this series?
Puzzles

Golden Sun features a strong emphasis on puzzle solving alongside traditional combat. Just about every single cave, dungeon, and ancient ruin has some kind of obstacle that needs to be traversed. Sometimes these puzzles can be completed with mundane abilities, but oftentimes you need to use special psynergy moves that can be activated outside of combat.
Djinn system

Djinn are small creatures that can be collected throughout the game. Each one has an elemental association, and it's own special ability. Each djinn can be assigned to a party member to modify his or her stats. As a rule, each party has an elemental association. Assigning djinn of a particular element to a party member with the same elemental association will result in a straight up stat boost. However, assigning a djinn to a party member of a different element will cause that party member to change classes, lowering some stats and raising others and causing the psynergy that the party member can use to change. A djinn's special ability can be activated in combat for the described effect, and afterwards the djinn will be set to standby. While in standby djinn can be used to activate summon abilities, powerful attacks of the "limit break" variety that often result in massive damage.
Games in the series so far:
Golden sun

The first game in the series for the gameboy advance. Released in 2001, Golden Sun follows Isaac, a resident of vale, in his quest to prevent the elemental lighthouses from being lit, breaking the seal on alchemy and releasing it into the world once again.
Golden Sun: The Lost Age

Released a year later, GS:TLA starts where Golden Sun left off, with two of the elemental lighthouses lit. However this time around the story follows Felix, who worked for the antagonists of the previous game in attempting to light the lighthouses. Over the course of the game, it is discovered that the, without alchemy, the world of weyard is slowly falling apart, and will over time be washed over the edge by the massive waterfalls tumbling into the abyss if alchemy is not restored. With this newfound knowledge you set out to light the remaining lighthouses.
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn

Released November 29th, 2010, Dark Dawn is the most recent installment of the series. It takes place 30 years after the lighting of the elemental lighthouses. The damage caused by the necessary but nonetheless violent reintroduction of alchemy changed the world considerably. The game follows the children of the protagonists of the previous games along with several other characters as they explore the reshaped world and activate forgotten alchemy devices, for better or worse.
I don't enjoy this game/I don't think I'll enjoy this game because...
Well heck, I don't mind. it's not my job to make you want to play it or anything. The game probably has plenty of problems you could bring up, nothing about it particularly bothered me, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who simply aren't into this kind of game/art style.

Final Notes
So, uhhhh. This is my first OP. Hope I did an alright job of it. If anyone thinks anything should be added, feel free to ask I guess.
Good OP, lots of content.
Also, is this the game with the commercial where the kid calls his djinn to do something and like blows up his house and puts his family in bodycasts?
Because if so I don't think that kids should be left with that much power. :colbert:

Heh, I don't know, I've never seen that one. The only real trailer for it I've seen was the dark dawn one that they showed at E3.

Yeah, commercials for games like this are always shitty.
Then again, in this day and age you can't really show gameplay from a game like this and expect a great response. Sad.
Oh man, nostalgia. I remember getting stuck at this one part in the first Golden Sun where I was on a ship and a kraken attacked us.

Yeah, looked it up. So many of nintendo's commercials have hardly anything to do with the actual game.
Oh man I still haven't beaten the final boss in The Lost Age. Planning on getting Dark Dawn soon.

Yeah, I'm pretty close to the end of dark dawn. So far I don't really have any complaints other than that it seems like it's kind of easy compared to the others.

I think the first two were criticized for being too difficult so they more than likely made it easier.
WAIT WHAT
Dark dawn was released?
WHY DID I NOT GET ANY NEWS ABOUT THIS?
:smith:
Golden Sun, Fucking nolstalgia up in this motherfucker.
Best looking game on a gameboy imho.
I must have finished this game more than 10 times. I have 2 completed saves on my GBA, but for one of them, I saved just before the final boss so that I can finish EVERYTHING about the game. I leveled my characters up so many levels, I think they're almost 60, and got all djinns, then I got to that optional boss that is the hardest in the game, I think he's called Dunhamm or something like that, he OWNED me. I tried fighting him several times using many tactics, but I just need to get more levels I guess.
I loved how almost all side-quests made you feel connected and care for the characters, I remember each city distinctively, though I don't remember some names. I remember how I was fascinated with Lemuria, felt really sorry for the wolf-people, those people who had to sacrifice virgins to the dragon, and all those people who got turned to trees.
I started a new save a few weeks ago, I just finished Collosso. This game is so burnt into my mind, that sometimes when exploring the world map, I said to myself "now I should go north" when the city I had to go to was say, west, so I went north and then out of nowhere a djinn popped up, I didn't even remember it was there, I just remembered I had to go there for some odd reason.
I also absolutely adore the music in the game:

That's enough for now. Did you know that if you go to that arena-battle thing (it's not a place on the worldmap, you have to save the game, go to the main menu, then choose battle and your save file) and then you speak to a girl on the left side, while holding L or R or both, don't remember, she'll let you play all the soundtracks that you've heard on the save? I love doing that from time to time.
If anyone is stuck on anything, especially if it's the first GS and not TLA, just ask and I'll probably know the answer immediately.

Also, can't wait to get DD, but I don't have a DS and don't wanna spend so much money on it just for one game :\
Golden Sun has been one of my favorite games of all time. I tried to keep track of Dark Dawn (from back when it was only known as Golden Sun DS) and had fallen off the chase for awhile. I know what I'm going to buy tomorrow.
Oh man, nostalgia. I remember getting stuck at this one part in the first Golden Sun where I was on a ship and a kraken attacked us.
That took me an embarrassingly long time to find the sailors in the bottom of the ship, I never noticed the stairs.
Oh and dark dawn is pretty cool. The only reason I've been playing my DS now.
It's such a shame the music isn't as good as the first and second.
Fucking loved this game.
I remember I had so much trouble figuring out how to kill Poseidon. I got past the sea of time and bam! Invincible boss unless you got the trident of ankhol reforged.
I remember beating the first game in the series. For me, this game was only after Pokemon and Advance Wars as far as Gameboy series go. So, that's pretty fucking good.
Just finished Dark Dawn. Ending is a massive cliffhanger, so expect a sequel.
I've only played the second one, and it was pretty fun.
I couldn't beat the final boss when I first got the game, so I raged and came back 4 years later and beat it.
Shit felt so awesome
i wasn't able to finish the first one because i got stuck on the last boss, kept killing me when they fused together to make that gay op fusion dragon.
Dude I remember this game...I beat the first and second but it was such a bitch! Just climbing up the Earth tower pissed me off.

Dark Dawn is the worst game I have played in years. It has some of the worst writing, most unlikeable characters, and uninspired enemies I've ever seen. I couldn't bring myself to finish it because of how god awful it was and I strongly suggest avoiding it at all cost. I will throw down a wall of text if needed but god damned it's writing is offensive to the eyes.

What level was everyone? And did you get all Djinn?
Don't face the final boss before you have 7 djinn of each kind, and with everyone level 30+ you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

Elaborate please!
Then again, i didn't get far in the "second" golden sun.
I loved the first 2 games and I consider them to be the best games I have ever played. I haven;t finished Dark Dawn because of the amount of work I have to do currently.
Dark Dawn was a huge disappointment for me. I've finished both Golden Sun and The Lost Age, so I was expecting pretty good things from DD. Then I played it on a friends DS.
It feels like they've dumbed it all down for younger audiences. The 3D didn't really help much either, as it didn't really feel like a GS game to me anymore. They also didn't really add much to the game either, as far as I know.
The only good thing I can really say about it is that the combat is much better.
I fucking loved these games. First thing I did when I got an emulator on my phone was play these two games again (had previously owned them). Even now I could get excited about beating bosses and advancing in the game. Golden Sun and Golden Sun : The Lost Age were two of the greatest games on the gameboy, can't say much about the third one though as I haven't played it.
Dark Dawn is the worst in the series.
The first hour is basically a tutorial teaching me stuff that I already know, the enemies are mostly recycled from the previous games and I didn't like the story. The music was good though.
The other games was fun to play at least.
