I was just wondering the opinion of Facepunch on this matter, and wanted to try and obtain some comprehensive arguments from both sides.
If you mean like Mortal Kombat / Tekken / Dead or Alive..
Well... their basically the same thing.
Just different people / attacks /story's..
What about Blazblue or Guilty Gear?
I think at the core they are all the same, at least round based and with a limited time, usually around 1 minute or 99 seconds. Only difference is art and story direction from what I can tell.
yes because super smash brothers is exactly like mortal kombat in every way possible.

What? No. Of course not. You're retarded if you think so.

Yeah, those all look the same. *rolls eyes*
That first one was... interesting
also the last one, he doesn't seem to be very good with Steve..
Also they look kinda similar to me.
Not exactly the same, because only an idiot would say that...
Actually I think this thread is dumb
Kinda like asking if all FPSs are the same.

My opinion is that other genres tend to re-tool their concepts and add more new elements and gameplay features much, much more than the fighter genre. Essentially, all I see are new skins, new music, new story line, and a few new moves, all of which don't vary too much from the core gameplay.
Although, most of my argument is flawed due to my inexperience with the genre.

you could say the same about every first person shooter.

The way I see it is that there's more variance between FPSes, though.
Look at Battlefield, and compare it to Call of duty. Call of duty features killstreaks, customizable classes, (essentially the same weapons >_>), and atleast one new mini-game feature per game.
Battlefield, however, focuses around pre-set classes all with a unique niche to play in the game, with little intersection between the items available to each class. Spotting is a core mechanic of the game, as are vehicles and their interesting controls.
Those differences feel enough to justify multiple games.
The differences between Super smash bros and mortal combat are also just as varied.
I would really like to know more differences, and I'm sorry in advance for my ignorance.
You made a thread about a genre you aren't even close to familiar with.
What were you thinking, this is an very stupid argument that can be said about every single other genré.
