I own both, and love each of them. I got UT2004 on 6 CDs, it's a bitch to reinstall. But I've installed it so many times I have the CD key memorized :v:
A few years ago, I got UT3 on Steam. I played it, and I loved it. Basically because it was just UT2004 with a graphics update and some new cool things. (Hoverboards, new vehicles, etc.)
So why do people hate UT3 when it's essentially UT2004, just.. improved? Am I missing something?

UT3 has the stupid huge bulky thug problem like GoW does for one...
Plus the modding in UT2004 is awesome :)

Modding I'll give you, I forgot about that. Although there are some kickass mods for UT3.
But what the hell do you mean by "huge bulky thug?"
UT2004 seems faster paced than U3.
I prefer 2004 over U3 mostly because of that, and I like the vehicles in the Onslaught more than the new ones added in U3.
I like 2004 because it has that classic feeling to it.
I prefer UT99

UT3 is 4 years old now, that's almost a classic :v:

That all characters take in a lot of sideways space, because they look like they're steroided up spehs mahrens.
Ut2004 came before brown equalled realism.
So the maps are vibrant colored and full of life, thats what really attracts me to it.
Its also easier to map for.
I prefer UT99
I have it on my flash drive, portable 200mb exe file fuckyeah.
:argh: AUTOMERGE
UT2004 had better ragdolls. Not joking, ragdolls were fucking awesome to play around with when I was younger.
I don't know exactly why, maybe because it's been a while since I've played UT3, but it just doesn't feel like UT2004. It just.. Isn't as good as 2k4. Also, it looks better.

All the characters have that "Gears of War" style to them.
They're all huge and bulky, and their body types look rather awkward imo.
UT3 is undoubtedly better for modding.
Whether or not that translates to better mods is chocked up to what people have created by this point.
I never liked Unreal Tournament as a game itself, But I always buy them to use the development kits/editors and to download the mods.

They all look like they've done some serious baseball training since 2004
I also prefer the weapons in Ut2004. They just look fun to use.
Ballistic Weapons, however, has made me not use the default weapons for years.
UT2004 just seem to be a little less seireous which is what UT is meant to be.
The whole game used to revolve around the "tournament" not jubbed up spess mahreens taking on spess nazi cyborg zombehs.
No seriously, that was the entire plot of UT3 and as awsome as it may sound it come togehtter in a horrid mix that sounds like wet shit with sprinkles.
Ice-cream, dinosaurs and Rail-guns are all awesome but don't exactly work well together as a single entity.
Specially not if you just throw a load of brown over it and call it "HYPUR REALSTUC"
In short, UT3 was the same but different and it was exactly the wrong kind of different that serves no purpose but to make things like like the brand new diarrhoea brown games we seem to be getting too many of these days.
Because all the pretty colors and interesting characters got sacrificed for the shitty Gears look and instead of playing as badass robots or pharaohs you get too choose between four different shoulder plates.
Did I mention how they tried to force on a retarded plot involving aliens attacking earth. You would get long briefings about how you had to stop the alien invasion, and when the round began the announcer goes "You are on blue team".
It's called Unreal Tournament for a reason, you fools.
The maps were much better in 2004.
In Ut3, they are basically a choice of some industrial thing, such as a city or whatever, or Asia.
Ut2004 let you go onto Temples in space, bases underwater, an ancient forest, etc etc.

"bulky thug" that's actually been in the Unreal universe since the first game. really, go back and look. the only reason they were smaller, so to speak, is because of technical limitations, to have them bigger and bulgier you need more polygons. it was in the Unreal series before it was in Gears of War
and there's the exact same modability. there are only more mods for UT2k4 because well it's older and a lot of the modding community likes to stick with a particular engine. there are still some great UT3 mods though
UT3 is too streamlined, and with weird physics compared to UT04 that is.
the reason i'd prefer UT2k4 over UT3 is scale.
the weapons feel more powerful
the maps feel huge (most of the maps are, anyway)
more vehicles, and they feel like they have a wider range from tiny to gargantuan
something about UT3 makes it seem like it's a watered down yet prettier/visually up to date form of UT2k4

you know you can change the post processing in UT3 (GoW as well), right?
Same reason people play cod4 over mw2
(hint: it's a better game)

True.
Plus, UT2K4's multiplayer actually works.
An insane ammount of people can't play UT3 online for some unknown reason, and a patch for that was never released.
UT2k4 also seems nicer IMO.
ut2004 has better mods, online, and faster-paced gameplay too imo
everything seems more bright and less grimdark too

also it never came to nintendo 64 :(
One of the first fps games I played was the UT2004 demo
Oh man, nostalgia.

What? You never played unreal 1, Half life, serious sam or quake?
UT2004 had vibrant and varied levels and tons of gamemodes.
UT3 had lots of brown colour and a very little actual content.
They removed that electric gun from UT3.
