From Dust is a game in which you take control of a tribe in a hostile world which is an extreme version of Earth. You don't control the tribe directly though, instead you use your powers to protect them from harm. According to the developers, it will be a spiritual sequel to Populous. It's developed by Eric Chahi, who you might not remember, but he was behind the game Another World and helped develop Heart of Darkness In the words of the Eric:
You influence them more indirectly. It's a kind of god game, but one where nature plays an important part - you have abilities but they're not unlimited. You're not an individual from the tribe, but the tribe as a whole. You're not a god. If they disappear, you disappear.
The game simulates all kind of geological and natural events, from the rivers and mountains forming to volcanoes and tsunamis. Your objective is to shield your tribe from all this. For example you could block a river with trees, maybe redirect the water to a volcanic area to halt the lava? You will also have more powers than just moving stuff around:
The village is spared and you’re allowed to mess around with a new power--one that gives you the ability to freeze water.
Thet doesn't mean digging in the sand is just a waste of time though:
Shrines (and other objects) can also be found by digging for them in the sands or uncovering them through other methods. Looks awesome, I loved populous back in the day. I will definitely try this out.
Dayum this looks good.
Want. This looks incredibly awesome! The whole "There's no protagonist, you're the world" thing is cool too. Can't wait.
Wow, that actually looks really cool.
Holy shit all that is ingame video. That looks more like a cinematic trailer. Must buy for me. DO NOT DISAPPOINT ME UBISOFT!
FUCK! I only just realized it will be on consoles as well. Lets hope its not dumbed down to shit.
Awesome! I loved Populous way back then!
Tech Demo http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gc-10-from-dust/703081
That looks absolutely incredible.
holy fucking shit. This is like a sandbox dream come true
I can't wait to flood a crater with lava, then slowly cut a whole into the terrain to let it seep out into my village, then heroically stem the path with a river. Multiplayer would be awesome, 2 villages either side of a map, dynamic terrain, each player gets 3 defensive, 2 offensive spells (defensive: water, treeline, rock, offensive: lava, tsunami, mini-earthquake). Aswell as a dynamic event system (villagers get diseases, animals die, crops don't grow, tornadoes, bla bla), and a given objective perhaps (reach x amount of villagers, or x amount of generations). So damn epic, engine looks awesome.

I don't know if there will be multiplayer, but since the engine is done they can expand upon it a lot (expansions, DLC, sequels and whatnot). Also if it's moddable :gizz: [editline]12:00PM[/editline] Also yeah MP would be really awesome. Imagine flooding the valley in which the other player is, or building your village at the top of a mountain so the tsunamis won't reach you.
Please, don't let me get hyped for this, only to have a repeat of Spore. :frown: [editline]04:07PM[/editline] Ignore me, i'm a fucking knob end.
Please, don't let me get hyped for this, only to have a repeat of Spore. :frown: [editline]04:07PM[/editline] It's console only, apparently.
It's for PC too: http://www.videogamer.com/xbox360/project_dust/preview-2413.html http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=260571
I love God Games where you're actually given the powers of a God. Like using the elements.
This game looks so fucking awesome.. Brb looking for fitting emoticon.
This seems like... the game I've been waiting for. I hope it stays so promising. :)
To bad Ubisoft is going to put that stupid ass DRM on it, unless they get it on steam.
To bad Ubisoft is going to put that stupid ass DRM on it, unless they get it on steam.
I think I read that it was going to be on Steam, but I can't find the source so I won't add it to the OP until I do.
The tech demo is impressive but it usally goes like this ... They always dumdown the release later to make slower computers able to run the game :(
Holy shit I've got to get this game Except I'd probably end up trying to kill the tribe :v:
The tech demo is impressive but it usally goes like this ... They always dumdown the release later to make slower computers able to run the game :(
When has that ever happened? It has to run on Xbox hardware too, which encompasses several year old computers now.
They better have some type of sandbox "do whatever the fuck you want" thing, or shit will be started
The tech demo is impressive but it usally goes like this ... They always dumdown the release later to make slower computers able to run the game :(
The tech-demo is supposed to represent the game on consoles too, so if it runs on consoles I doubt they'll have to dumb anything down even for low end PCs (the 360 isn't exactly a beast). [editline]06:56PM[/editline] FFFF got ninja'd hard. [editline]06:57PM[/editline]
Holy shit I've got to get this game Except I'd probably end up trying to kill the tribe :v:
Won't we all? I for sure will cause some havoc on my first try. [editline]06:59PM[/editline]
They better have some type of sandbox "do whatever the fuck you want" thing, or shit will be started
Well I can't say for sure, but that "editor" at the end of the Tech Demo seems to have quite an UI, so maybe we will get some kind of editor, at least on the PC version. Also at the end of the tech demo when the island sinks (or better, is sunk) and the water washes over everything it looks orgasmic.
If it lives up to that tech demo then I am SO buying this.
If it lives up to that tech demo then I am SO buying this.
Well if you think about it, the RTS game Maelstrom had terraformation, water simulation (you could flood the entire map with water, or redirect it in a river towards your enemy) and other stuff back in 2006 (and Maelstrom wasn't exactly a big budget game by famous developers). So technologically I'd say it's definitely possible.
Amazing, I'am going to get this if it looks like the tech demo. Also I read somewhere that the final name for the game is called From Dust.

I guess I'll PM a mod for a title change.
Looks awesome, I will surely look forward to be playing it.
