So I have reached a dilemma. In leaving for a boarding school I have decided I need a new console. My thinking behind this is I am not doing quite as well as I want to, and no matter how much I deny this it can partially be blamed on gaming. Oh, and the xbox 360 technically also belongs to my younger bother so I kinda can't take it.
To fix this I've gathered about 500 dollars, about 150 is going to the screen, about 100 for a replacement to my old sound system. The dolemma is, do I go for the now somewhat indie ps2, or the high priced ps3. I also don't really want another xbox 360, and the original xbox seems a tiny bit of a step backwards rather than a new direction, but I am open to it.
I'm not really into jrpg's, but I do enjoy the mgs series. Im not certain but I think in the upcoming birthday I can gather about 150 more dollars. I really want your opinion, and I would appreciate the reasons behind it. However, whatever you do dont start a console war. I really want this to be civil. And also I already have a decent gaming laptop, so please refrain from pushing pc.
Thanks

PS3. At least then, your chances of it randomly blowing up on you is minimized, and you get new games to boot.
