Tribes is a series of sci-fi team-based multiplayer-focused FPS games developed by Dynamix that simply kick ass. The series began with Tribes 1's release in 1998, with two sequels (Tribes 2 in 2001 and Tribes:Vengeance in 2004) and a console version (Tribes: Aerial Assault in 2002) later being made. What makes these games special is the massive maps, vehicle-based combat, huge variety in classes and weapons, awesome community, and jetpacks. That's right, jetpacks. [release] Tribes 1 - November 30, 1998 Starsiege: Tribes (also known as Tribes 1) was the first game in the series, introducing the elements that would remain staples of the series. It featured three armor types, a few vehicles, five gametypes, and 40 massive maps. In Tribes 1, there was an exploit of the physics engine that allowed one to quickly "ski" around the map by tapping jump when landing down hills. This ability was retained in every later Tribes game, becoming a major gameplay element, and even being made braindead easy in Vengeance. [/release] [release] Tribes 2 - March 21, 2001 Tribes 2 revamped the graphics engine, added a load of modding capabilities, a powerful community system featuring email, clans, and friends lists, new vehicles, new maps, and new gamemodes. At first it was not well-received due to tweaks in the physics that made it slower-paced than its predecessor, but a new "Classic" mode was added by the developers that remedied this. This game had a huge modding community. One of these mods was a powerful sandbox mod entited "Construction Mod". This mod featured many abilities that even Garry's Mod and Minecraft do not feature. Some features included the ability to construct massive structures with only a few beams and "pads", force fields, programmable turrets, and elaborate systems of teleporters with a power system. [/release] [release] Tribes: Vengeance - October 2004 Tribes: Vengeance was the third Tribes game, and was disliked by most of the original community. The game was streamlined, simplified, and basically turned into Unreal with jetpacks. A real single player mode was included for the first time in Tribes history. Vengeance received poor support from the developers, being completely abandoned in March 2005. [/release] [release] Where is Tribes today? The IP was bought by Hi-Rez Studios who are now making a Tribes MMO. A lot of the original community, again, is not very happy about this, especially since it meant the death of PlayTribes, a Quake Live-like version of Tribes 1. Tribes 1 and 2 were released as free downloads in 2004. Vivendi shut down the Master Servers for Tribes 1 and 2 in November 2008, making the games unable to be played online. Of course, this only lasted for a short while, as the community set up their own master servers. A few hundred players can be found online in Tribes 1 and 2, and there are still occasional 64-player games. Me and my friend spent weeks obsessively playing Tribes: Aerial Assault.
The Tribes 2 video was fucking intense, I got to try this
Yep, Tribes 2 is the most popular one today.
One of my very first multiplayer shooters was Starsiege Tribes. So many god damn memories from it, I played the demo for the longest time before actually buying the game. Tribes 2 comes along with its demo and I play the shit out of that before having my mom pick up the game for me... I remember feeling a giddiness I never knew existed when she pulled the big box out of the bag. I spent an ungodly amount of time playing it. And as for T:V, I got into the beta for it on fileplanet and played it for a bit... it was really just UT2004 with jetpacks and I never got around to buying it because of how much I hated it. It's really a damn shame that Tribes never truly got the continuation it deserved and that MMO bullshit is just salting the wound from T:V.

The only thing I seriously dislike about Tribes is how you can just equip a grenade launcher and spam the base with nades around corners. Die, come back and do it again. That and Tribes 1 repelled me for some strange reason, so I played Tribes :Vengeance and Fallen Empire: Legions(Now called Legions:Overdrive(http://www.legionsoverdrive.com/)). Tribes Next wasn't out by that time. Oh and the tutorials were hideously bad... even on youtube. So I didn't know how to do much except try to ski and how to change classes.
I never played a tutorial. I just jumped in. I was like 9 or 10 at the time too and loved every second of it. I must've played the games for like 4 years straight.
Same. I was ten when I first played Tribes 2, and still play it today, after eight years.
Holy shit, me too.
Holy shit, me too.
Yeah, it seems like a lot of the Gmod community was at least formerly a part of the Tribes 2 community, particularly the Construction Mod community.
Renegades and Shifter mods represent.
Going to pick up the MMO soon. I got tribes 2 retail, I had tribes 1 but lost it.
These games look awesome. One question OP, does it work for vista?
These games look awesome. One question OP, does it work for vista?
Yes. The Tribes games work on Vista and Windows 7.
Nostalgia was instant as soon as I saw thread title! Edit: Funny, the box is right next to my monitor, in a cabinet!
I absolutely loved Tribes 1 when I played it 1 or 2 years ago but for whatever reason, when I try to install the game now, it can't find the master server so I can't join any games. Can anyone help me out here?
Was I the only one who really liked Vengeance?
Was I the only one who really liked Vengeance?
Probably. The singleplayer was really the only good part about it. The multiplayer was horse shit.
I take it a work around for Tribes 2 needed a CD key was found? I recall it technically being free/abandonware a good while ago, but requiring a CD Key, which was made available from whatever company had the rights to it until they "ran out of keys".
Tribes Vengeace was the shit. I was on the Rebel Dawgs in the BEML league. That game was....so.....good. Look up "Most Wanted: tribes vengeance"
I gave up looking for members of the Construction community for T2. I can't find any. :smith: I want to play but I'm too dumb to figure out what to do to make it work. I can't even find it. :saddowns:
Was I the only one who really liked Vengeance?
I loved Vengeance because grenade spammers could actually be countered in most of the maps
There's a decent Tribes mod for ETQW called Tribal Wars [editline]19th January 2011[/editline]
Renegades and Shifter mods represent.
Shifter was amazing. (Especially the morph pack)

Fuck Yeah, Tribes 1 was the game that got me started in computer gaming to begin with, I remember buying an unopened copy in the metal bins they used to come one at gamestop back in 2003 for my Windows 95. It owned, and I still have friends I met on there from the first days of me playing it. :unsmith: [editline]23rd January 2011[/editline] Also, I can still say the Tribes 1 construction mod was superior to the Tribes 2 version back in its golden days.
