I'm fucking tired of the standard Cod4/5 MP gameplay fucking nadefest on every server, so I'm planning to do something radical and I need your opinion on it facepunch. I want to make a custom 64(possible more?) man server with a open-world type of gameplay in COD 5. Similar to the Red Orchestra "Alte Ziegelei" gameplay but with less tanks. The map would be entirely made by me with the standard cod5 prefabs and some custom stuff. My main inspiration would be the MOHAA "DM_2: Destroyed Village" map but a lot larger and environment based on the first scene in Quentin Tarentino movie "Inglourious Basterds" The map will consist of 3(quite large) towns spread on the map and one town will have a semi-destroyed church(like the destroyed village map) Random farms/houses will be on the map(like on the picture) and every building will be accessible and have open windows. Popular spots would have ammo deposits to keep the action and try to takeover cities. main battles will be held inside a town so snipers wont dominate the game. The server will run a Extreme Realism mod that will disable all the faggotry that the COD series stands for.(martyr, regen, hit indication, deep impact etc) So hopefully you'll get the idea of an huge open worldish WW2 map. Now my question was, is this possible on the COD5 engine? What is the limit for map size etc Also what kind of dedicated server do I need, I was planning using a Athlon 64 3000+ , 2ghz, 1GB DDR2 and 100Mbps Full-Duplex, is this enough? And second, what do you guy think of this idea? of a huge open non-linear map with Americans fighting the Nazis 24/7.
Cool idea, if the engine limitations allow and you can run the server, I'd get COD5 just for this and nazis. [editline]09:23AM[/editline] You should make a custom Jeep vehicle and APC for fast transportation too. And how would people obtain weapons? Trader system? Money for kills then used in safehouse buyzones? And lastly what about respawns? Would it be constant respawning or?
when will people realise that CoD is not battlefield. CoD is about small teams fighting fast paced in a small environment. If youre sick of nadefests, stop playing on 32 man servers running maps that were designed for 12.
Yeah this would be really slow-paced. Go play Arma maybe?
Isn't Battlefied 1942 like that? It's an open world. And there is that WWII online.

No trading system, just the usual cod5 custom classes and levels. I'm trying to keep this very simple and realistic.
Yeah this would be really slow-paced. have you ever mapped on this engine?
have you ever mapped on this engine?
Yes, though I'm a big noob at it yet, as previously only worked with source SDK. Currently I'm trying to find out how to make a decent day/night cycle for this map.

Just imagine the word enemy is Nazi and there you have it.

Also you don't speak for "the people" and just because you find this kind of realism boring doesn't mean others share the same opinion.
Yes, though I'm a big noob at it yet, as previously only worked with source SDK. Currently I'm trying to find out how to make a decent day/night cycle for this map.
you do realise that the maps gonna lag like mad if its too big, right?
you do realise that the maps gonna lag like mad if its too big, right?
I've seen some huge maps that had absolutely no difference on my fps (Im using a 4890). But if is there's some kind of noticeable lag I will make sure to optimize it for the players by using some map techniques(remove fillings of walls etc).
I've seen some huge maps that had absolutely no difference on my fps (Im using a 4890).
links to these 'huge maps' please?
links to these 'huge maps' please?
Hold on, let me see if I can find it. [editline]03:41PM[/editline] Can't find it, you'd have to take my word for it. It was a modified "outskirts" map that let you drop down with a parachute onto a rock and had to invade into the city.
Sounds awesome. I would love to play on a server like this.
Sounds awesome. I would love to play on a server like this.
Glad to hear :)
was also thinking of adding doors/windows that could be opened.
I really doubt the Call of Duty community would want to play a really slow paced map.
Red Orchestra would be better for this.
Red Orchestra would be better for this.
That's what I thought first, however large maps on Red Orchestra lag as shit.
update: made a test level today, absolutely no lag whatsoever. shit's tight with reflective walls, gonna be one awesome map.

The map may not lag, but I'm pretty sure huge man servers lag like hell on CoD4 and 5.

It had big open spaced maps, but it is still COD. What COD 5 lacked is big and wide maps for vehicles. Roundhouse is too fucking small for vehicles, and CODUO had large maps.

You're probably best off just getting a WW2 mod for Armed Assault or Operation Flashpoint.
I haven't seen that movie. I have to see it.
