• Dan's Minecraft - Friendly, Semi-Vanilla, SMP Server

Hey Facepunch. I don't know if many of you remember my server from a few years back, but I've finally managed to get it back up and running. It's a small, friendly server in which most players get the chance to know each other. I've tried to not install many gameplay changing plugins, but we do have some plugins running such as Protection Stones, Essentials, and Lockette. My website is kind of empty right now, but you can check it out at www.dansminecraft.com You DO NOT need to register on the website to play on the server, there is NO WHITELIST. However, registering does open up some player commands that you would not normally have. The map is about 12000x12000 blocks and is still full of space for building. If you decide to check out the server, I suggest you type /rules and build far away from the spawn to avoid getting griefed (although all players get 1 free Protection Stone). Server Address: 209.105.227.190:25661 Let me know what you think of the server, I'm always open for suggestions on how to improve it. Here's some pictures of/near the spawn. Is there any reason why the map is limited in space? Also, the 'abilities' for donators and shit is WAAAAYYYY too giving. Builders can't chop trees? Too bad. Not registered? Can't use /sethome. Servers are supposed to be fun places and not "DONATE TO BE BETTER THAN OTHERS!" If anything, you give way too many abilities to even a 1 dollar donator. These abilities are something a registered player should have.

I advertise this as Semi-Vanilla server, and I feel that receiving /sethome for registering is very fair considering I don't have a whitelist and it takes literally about 2 minutes of your time. Also I think you might be misunderstanding the idea of donations. If you donate, you are helping me keep this server alive and thus I will reward you, but you are not better and will not be treated differently from other players. I would NEVER restrict a players ability to play the game unless they donate; you have all the tools needed to have a good time without having to spend a penny. As for registering, I don't want to force it upon the players, but I do encourage it because it's a lot easier for me to manage the server/players through the website. The map is limited in size because it makes chunks a lot easier manage, especially when Minecraft updates and implements new blocks in the world. Also it prevents new chunk generation and ridiculous file sizes, which hopefully reduces the lag on the server. I hope this explains why I run the server in this manner.
You don't make donator ranks unless you're some super popular server, which yours obviously isn't.
Also the big selling point of Minecraft is infinite worlds frankly limiting it is a bad idea, and if you don't have room/horsepower to be hosting a Minecraft server, artificial limits won't help
You don't make donator ranks unless you're some super popular server, which yours obviously isn't.
Albeit the server doesn't have many users at the moment. However, a year ago it had 400+ members of which over 50 were donators and helped pay for the monthly fee's. I have to keep those ranks for the players that return, and yes, quite a few of them have returned. It would be unfair of me to remove the ranks after they had donated in the past.
Also the big selling point of Minecraft is infinite worlds frankly limiting it is a bad idea, and if you don't have room/horsepower to be hosting a Minecraft server, artificial limits won't help
I assure you that the server can handle large map files, but why should it have to? As i mentioned, there are many pro's to limiting a map in size. First off, all the chunks are pre-generated, meaning less client side lag (the EU players appreciate this). Second, it is easier to add and remove chunks using plugins such as WorldEdit when new blocks are introduced. Otherwise you might have to end up starting a new map, I see this happen often in servers I've played on. It might seem that 12000 x 12000 is small, but it's actually fairly large. It hasn't happened yet, but if the players complain about the size of the world then I would gladly increase or remove the limit. However, nobody has been troubled by the size as far as I know.
end up starting a new map
That wouldn't happen if you didn't have a limited map. You could just generate some new chunks, and how is easier to worldedit chunks better? What use would that have.
hmm can't venture off and find undiscovered land your animal supply will eventually run dry
hmm can't venture off and find undiscovered land your animal supply will eventually run dry
My mind is drawn towards something like this happening, except probably not since there's an admin.
Let's boycott the server until our demands are meant.
That wouldn't happen if you didn't have a limited map. You could just generate some new chunks, and how is easier to worldedit chunks better? What use would that have.
Alright, so regions file's are named based on the coordinates of the region. Since the map is a square, these files are created in such a pattern that makes it very easy to go region by region detecting protection stones and deleting the region that don't have any. This allows the new chunks to form where the old ones were and players don't have to travel for 30 minutes in order to find new blocks. Also it controls the map size, which I can't see as a bad thing. At least that's my logic behind it.
hmm can't venture off and find undiscovered land your animal supply will eventually run dry
A chunk is 16x16x16 blocks, and there's a roughly 1 in 10 chance that animals will spawn in a chunk. the map is 12000x12000, meaning there are 750x750 chunks within it, that's a total of 562500 chunks. So with a 1 in 10 chance of animals spawning, that means there are roughly 56250 animals on the map. the server currently has 62 players registered, I think we'll be alright for a while. Spore is just a sperg, the server looks fine as is. Would play but homework
That's insulting, it's criticism.
