Penumbra: Overture
First of all I would like to stress the fact that this open source release does not make Penumbra: Overture free in anyway. All assets (except a few that are part of the engine) are still under the same copyright as before. The thing that is free is the source code for the executable which is now released under the GPL version 3 licence.
The code for Penumbra: Overture is a continuation of the one used for the tech demo + some addition for the not so long lived Robo Hatch project. It also contains some code from Unbirth, giving it quite some history. This history means that the code is far from clean and as expected quite hackish in places. That said, it should have a few interesting bits, the major probably being the physicsal interaction system. This system is not the latest version in the Penumbra series and misses something like rotation. These features should be farily easily to add though.
It is also important to note that Penumbra: Oveture source will not run Black Plague or Requiem. AI for the infected, GUI elements, etc are all missing, but all needed to implement them is present in the engine code (in case anybody is up for the challenge).

This sure is exciting. If people want to make an entirely new game they would have to create the assets from scratch or own one of the Penumbra games. Mods would definitely be possible though.

Here's some useful tools and information for use with this engine, straight from the horse's mouth.

The link if from there site, just a sec.
Fuck yeah. But if someone creates extra maps, I sure hope that they stick to the same horror element.

I personally wouldn't mind a more adventure/puzzle style mod.

Link works now.
Is this just code or has it got the the developer kit? Maps.etc?
We will see some interesting mods then.

Just the code, no assets.
Finally I can enjoy their great physics engine without screaming and turning game off every corner!
Penumbra really is such an underrated game.
It really is better than some of the newer games out there... (*cough* COD: MW2 *cough*)'
That said, THIS IS FUCKING FANTASTIC!
Port MW2 to Penumbra engine.

lol, it's just physx...
I want a Silent Hill style penumbra, with guns and shit.
I might look at their code out of curiosity, but that's about it. I can't think of anything worthwhile to use it for.
We need some tools.
Guns.
Cooperative Penumbra anyone? Sure, the isolated feel of it might be lost, but the fear of having to rely on someone else would overshadow that minor issue.
Fucking finally, been waiting since it was announced.
You'd still be defenseless, really. I'm not saying "Add guns, and melee weapons and make more of the infected appear." It'd just be you, a friend and a lot of friends holding doors shut while you run away.

But it also requires a fuck ass lot of modifying of the code.

True, but I found the idea itself sounding fun.

Sir, I wish I could punch you in the face for your ignorance.
"fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'Newton.h': No such file or directory"
From their source code because I don't have the Newton Physics SDK
How do you run the files for map editor? I really wanna try it out.

Note their similarities.... (And sorry for the large pics)
Fuck, now im scared to play black plague in the dark and im near the end of overture
co-op for the love of god.
Puzzle game with this engine would work so well. You know, one of those classic "you're alone in this ornate mansion, solve puzzles n shit" kind of games.
OH GOD MYST REMAKE WITH THIS ENGINE :flashfap:
co-op for the love of god.
Better, take a hint from Perfect Dark and make counter-op. Basically instead of cooperating, one of the players joins the enemy side (so the infected zombies/dogs). Maybe give the infected player something better to play with than zombies and dogs though.
Even better, a dungeon-master style scenario.
