Cave Story is a game produced by the Japanese Studio Pixel. It has been translated into English by Aeon Genesis Translations.
Taking place inside a mysterious floating island, you start off as an unnamed soldier with no recollection of his past. You soon discover a colony of rabbit-like people known as the Mimigas, whose village has recently been threatened by an enigmatic "Doctor" and his cronies, around the same time as taking in a stranger named Sue. You are soon drawn into the conflict, and as the story unfolds, the nature of the Doctor, Sue and her companions, the Mimigas, and your own presence on the island are revealed.
The game is a side-scrolling platformer reminiscent of Metroid and Castlevania. There is a good deal of shooting and jumping, and it controls very smoothly. Like the games mentioned above, you often come across various items such as health-extending capsules and missile expansions.
The combat system is very simple, but intuitive. As you dispatch enemies, they can drop either the typical health or ammunition, but also may leave orange engergy triangles, which can power up your equipped weapon when enough are gathered. Each level changes the way your weapon functions, often becoming vastly more powerful at the third (and highest) level. However, when injured, some of the energy for your weapon is lost, making it hard to keep your weapons at their most effective state.
Simple but stylized sprite graphics make the game environment very unique. The story is conveyed at a steady pace, and you'll likely find a character or two who is particularly endearing (I happen to like Balrog :3:.) Coupled with classic level design, this is one of the best freeware games to date.

Share thoughts on the game, tips, and secrets (there are plenty!) Have fun!
It is indeed the best freeware game ever.
Ballos was a cunt of a boss though.
Protip- get through the area with the rocket before it's built, either by cheating or having the machine gun and Booster 2.0. Funny little "You're not supposed to be here." easter egg.
It's an awesome game, I wouldn't play it because I thought the graphics were shitty, but then I did. Best 2d platformer-type game I've played.
is it best to keep the Polar star, or get the Machine gun?
is it best to keep the Polar star, or get the Machine gun?
You can go either way, both have their advantages.
If you keep it, you have a couple options later on for a powerful gun, but the machine gun comes in real handy in letting you float through the air. No other gun has that going for it.
My first time through, I took the machine gun, but I played the game one or two more times and explored every weapon option. I don't think there's a real best path to take, but everyone has their preference.

I might just download this game again. Hours of fun. I hope for a sequel! With more guns! Maybe give them fourth or fifth levels.
is it best to keep the Polar star, or get the Machine gun?
I kept the Polar Star. Getting the Spur is worth it as it doesn't de-level, and the machine gun wasn't that much fun to use to me.
Besides, odds are once you get the Nemesis/Sword you won't use either except as a last resort anyway.
Great game. I never had a chance to finish it, but will probably pick it back up again some day.
Here is a PSP port of it if.

Handy.
Ballos is a bitch.
Great game. I'm just beat the frog boss.
I kinda wish you could upgrade your weapon to four or five.
Reminds me of Metroid.
I remember playing this on my brothers PSP, loved it  and then he deleted it :argh:
Here's the Doukutsu trainer I made with Cheat Engine lol!
http://www.mediafire.com/?s1ntytmkyym
a) execute the trainer
b) run doukutsu
c) while in-game press ctrl + R for infinite rockets and/or press ctrl + D for faster dialogs
Yea great game, I just hate how the ending bosses are impossible to beat, I was very close at beating the third boss once, but there were a billion projectiles everywhere, huge turnoff for me that I can't get to see the ending. I also played it twice to try the Booster 2.0 and other weapons.

I put it on my PSP in the games folder, but when I launch it, it says "The game could not be started.(80020148)." :emo:
You have to either have firmare version 1.50 or Custom firmware for this.
Actually, the Touhou games are the best freeware games ever.
I just got to Hell...
:uhoh:
Bah, I love this game so damn much. Something about the plot/characters was so appealing. I think the only time I have ever felt bad in any game was when Curly died.
The last trio of bosses could stand to be a bit less cruel though.
Whatever anybody says, last 3 bosses were pussies.
It was too long for my liking, but very enjoyable.
I love these really well made pixel art games.
Anybody know anything similar to this?
In art direction and gameplay, I mean.
Nevermind.
I'm on the last three bosses. The first two are insane easy to kill, but the third one is hard.
I really liked this game. I stayed up until 4:00am playing it, and liked every bit of it, especially the plot line, characters, and the artistic aspect of it was very SNES-ish, so it was very much like playing my favorite game console.
How do you get the Booster 2.0? I only have the 0.8 one.

When Professor Booster falls in the labyrinth, DON'T TALK TO HIM. He'll escape and give you the Booster 2.0 back in Mimiga Village. If you do talk to him, he'll give you the Booster 0.8 and die then and there.
Giving up the Booster 0.8 starts the Hard Route, which has a whole lot of secrets.

Oh. Well, I'm playing through it again to get to one of the other endings.
I beat the game. After Misery and the doctor, the end boss isn't hard at all. To beat Misery, I just used the sword, and to beat the doctor, I used the sword at first, and when he got uncontrollable, I unloaded my rockets at him. Then the boss after that is pretty easy considering the little bad guys drop health and missiles. The end credits and artwork are really cool too.
Noctis is the best freeware game ever.
Just finished this. It's awesome enough to play through again to get all the secrets you're hinted of.

Did you know that the witch-woman Jenka once had a brother?
His name was Ballos.
Like his sister, he wielded powers far beyond those of mortals...
Edit:
I've actually played through this game like four times now. Soon to be 4.5. I say that because I beat it three times when I first found out about it, once for each weapon (machine gun, snake, and spur), and I got halfway through it playing a year ago in my spare time in one of my classes, and I'm halfway through beating it again.
The first two plays are definitely the best. I think the best way to go on the first run is to avoid using any kind of a guide and just do what you think you should.
Spoilers ahead, yo.
I would never have thought to search the core room for the tow rope on my own, and leaving that room after the battle as the door seals Curly in there having sacrificed herself to save you, and then the sad music starts playing, that was one of the most awesome parts of the game. Adding into that the deaths of Booster, King, and Toroko, it just seemed to make things so much cooler.
Then once you go through and you know what you need to do differently, and finding out you can save half the characters and even get to kick ass with Curly one more time at the end, and that Balrog and Misery aren't so bad is maybe even more awesome than the tragic first time.
Those fucking Dragon Boss Motherfuckers in the egg corridor are fucking douches.
Just killed that spherical fiend yesterday. It was pretty darn satisfying.
After I got over my fear of a virus in the download I got it and loved it!
(Then did a virus check no viruses, YAY!)
