• Am I the only one that thinks Half-Life 2 is a little overrated?

Alright. I can practically feel the rage coming in from me typing those words. And I know, there is nothing I can say that won't stop a plethora of messages calling me a wonderful rainbow of slurs and terms. But, whenever someone talks about the Greatest Vidya Game ever, it's almost always Half-Life 2. Almost always. But... I was thinking... why do we consider Half Life 2 the greatest game ever? What is it about it? I will admit. It's a solid shooter. But, the gameplay, is it really that amazing? It's kinda generic. The gravity gun is a lot of fun, but that's about it. And, I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I really dislike always having all your weapons on at one time. I dunno, Takes away from realism, but it also adds a bit of strategy if you can only have a few on equipped at a time. And, the shooting is always the same, but then there's those godawful clunky vehicle levels. Those are just so bad. Really. Anyway, next the story. Everyone goes on about Half-Life's amazing narrative. I want you to be perfectly honest. The First time you played Half Life 2, did you understand all these details about the Combine, that they kicked ass in 7 Hours, and that they took over the world and turned into this weird communist society, because I did not get it the first time I played. And maybe that was just me. And everyone always tells me that you have to "look" for Half-Life's story through little clues. And I like that. That's cool. But for me, it was almost too hidden. There needed to be clues or something, to help me get a grip. (I will get flamed for that part too. I know that) And the last thing I want to mention... Gordon Freeman is seriously the worst character ever. Silent protagonists bug me to hell and back. With Gordon, it's just really annoying, how they're always having him interact with these wonderfull characters with great personalites, and then we got the mute here. It bugged the shit out of me in Bioshock and Dead Space also. Mute Protagonists gotta go. Anyway, None of this makes sense or is coherent. I just wanna know, why is Half Life 2 held in such a high acclaim? Why is it revered as a god amongst petty games? And I will get asked this so I say it now. No, I'm not a huge COD obsessed gamer who spends all his time jizzing over Marcus Fenix and Dom. To be honest I dislike most of those games. My favorite games are the Original Bioshock, Dead Space 1+2, the Mass Effect series, the Fallout series, to name a few. You can check my XBL profile if you give a shit. You'll notice I have BLOPS and MW2 on there. I'm ashamed. It's mostly my brother who plays on my account, but I did finish the MW2 campaign only to hate it.

Oh god here comes the rage.
Oh god here comes the rage.
I know right? That's kinda what I mean. People get violent if you talk shit about Half Life.
Dumb thread
Dumb post. Yes, Half-Life 2 is hugely overrated, but has a rabid fanbase (much of which is concentrated on this board, understandably) and you will probably be mauled for pointing out that it's only alright.
You just don't like it cause its mainstream you fucking hipster faggot
there are video games other than half-life?
Oh, and there's nothing wrong with Call of Duty. They're 'alright' shooters just like Half-Life.
Oh, and there's nothing wrong with Call of Duty. They're 'alright' shooters just like Half-Life.
All of facepunch instantly assumes you're a dipshit "bro" gamer if you play COD.
I don't like any first person shooter campaigns. I hate single player in Halo, HL, COD, etc. Bioshock and Fallout are a bit different, though.
And I guess I should point out that Half-Life 2's engine was revolutionary when it released. That it was attached to a shooter that was being outdated as it released didn't make a difference to players because it was so shiny. But at this point even its engine is outdated. Stop breaking my automerge, dammit.
The story needs a bit of work. Everything else is fine
You overuse your "Return" key.
You overuse your "Return" key.
What? I think it's called "enter" duh
The story needs a bit of work. Everything else is fine
I saw it's the other way around.
No one thinks it's the greatest game of all time. It is, however, incredibly atmoshperic with a brilliant story. And the gameplay is definitely pretty boring today, but it was fun when it came out. I don't see anything wrong with the praise it gets.
I'm curious, was this thread created in response to my "Overpraising of Classic Games" thread?
this thread is now about chucky finster porn
I'm curious, was this thread created in response to my "Overpraising of Classic Games" thread?
It completely was. I noticed "Hey, why do we praise HL2 so much?"
Well, the thing I found the most striking in Half-Life 2 was the atmosphere. You really feel oppressed. The excellent sound design just accentuates this.

Well having been late to the Half-Life party, I can agree with the fanbase. I only played Half-Life 2 for the first time in late 2006. Honestly, it blew me away. Perhaps it is overhyped, but I was never a major fan and only played it because a friend showed me. Until then I had simply ignored it.

Please stop.
Can we get the fucking porn out of the thread? It's fuckin' wrong
everything is overrated by some and underrated by others.
Personally, I like the HL series alot. I didn't find the story hard to understand, and did in fact understand it on my first playthrough. While I wouldn't call them the greatest games of all time, they're one of my favorites.
Nope half-life 1 and 2 are both awesome. I didnt think so because someone said this I thought that because I played it and it was awesome.
Could you please. Not type annoyingly. You know. A little. Like this. I guess. Yeah, uhm that would be great.
I try but you know, I like my posts the way I like my single player experiences long
