0 A.D. A free RTS game in the style of Age of Empires with Linux Support
30 replies, posted
If you're like me, you grew up on Age of Empires II. And with Ensemble closed now it seems like there is a lack of good RTS games being made.
Not any more.
Wildfire games is making this, it's open source and still in alpha. But it has plenty of features so far. It even has support for all major operating systems, even OSX and Linux.
-FACTIONS-
With six factions so far and more being added, this game shows a lot of promise
-Romans "The great conquering imperial powerhouse that swept across Europe, the western shores of the Mediterranean and North Africa in its early days as a republic. The Romans are notable for their regimented military, powerful siege engines, broad range of naval vessels, politics, and adaptation to change."
-Carthaginians "will have the strongest navy in the game; the fiercest contendors on the high seas. They were also masters of naval trade, extending their trade routes even beyond the pillars of Hercules and circumnavigating Africa. They deployed towered War Elephants on the battlefield to fearsome effect, and had defensive walls so strong, they were never breached."
-Celts "The Britons and Gauls are the antithesis of the rigid organisation of Rome. A fierce horde of woad-painted Celtic warriors charging across the plains was a fearsome sight. They considered the bow and other ranged arms to be a weapon of cowards, and excel in hand-to-hand combat. Not known for their machines of war, they have minimal navy and siege. They construct mostly wooden buildings, which are fast and inexpensive to construct, though far less robust than their stone counterparts."
-Iberians "The Iberians were fathers of the art of guerilla warfare, capable of lightning strikes against an opponent and withdrawing before he can mass an offensive. Their foot units are some of the fastest and most rapid-firing in the game, particularly their Balearic Slingers. A number of their ranged units also have the unique ability to fire flaming missiles. Toledo steel grants them superior metal weaponry."
-Hellenes "Controlling the representatives from the Hellenic region, the player has the power of Sparta, Athens and Macedonia at his command. As the forebearers of philosophy, democracy, geometry, and hellenistic art and architecture, they are considered to be civic minded. However, do not discount the strength of their stone structures, the resolve of a hoplite in phalanx formation, or their historic ability to steal victory against seemingly insurmountable odds"
-Persians "The Persian Empire is the most cosmopolitan civilisation, levying a wide variety of troops from their vassal satrapies. Their infantry are weak and poorly-equipped, little more than cannon fodder, but can be massed in vast numbers. They have the strongest (though most expensive) cavalry in the game, and are the only civilisation that features all forms of cavalry, including the fearsome cavalry archer. Their cavalry is equally exotic, including camelry, mahout elephants, and scythed chariots. They are known for their lavish wealth, grand architecture and strong trade empire through the Silk Road."

LGR did a nice little presentation on the game which showcases a bit of it.

The servers seem a bit slow right now, but it's free so I can't really complain.
Sorry if this thread is a bit lack luster, it's my first time making a thread like this and I really want to share this game with people.
Woo! It's finally released. This game needs more love.
I forgot about this game. I heard about this ages ago.
What can you do in this alpha version? I can't find it on their website.
Is there multiplayer or can you just play with an ai or something?
Funny, I was thinking about AoEII a few days ago. Good to see a spiritual successor to it.
This is awesome, how near complete is it?
Looks pretty cool, I love AoE.
If this is ANYTHING like Age of Empires 2, once I get back home I'm totally going to play some god damn multiplayer.
Looks like Age of Empires 2, Empire Earth 1 and Rise of Nations had a baby. I'm very okay with this.
Holy shit, I fucking Love AoEII, I still have lan parties all the time
There, fixed the media tags. A word of warning to people, the game is very badly optimized it seems. I did a game with 3 AI and it got really laggy, but it seems to hold up well enough with only one AI.
Played this game a while ago.
Very enjoyable.
Wow, this looks REALLY Familiar.
So this is like a 3d AoE2? That's badass. I can't wait to see what the modding community does. I remember playing an RTS called Rise and Fall of Nations that had a REALLY cool mechanic where you could play as a single soldier and fight alongside your men. Problem was that it was WAY too overpowered. It'd be neat if someone made a mod like that with balance. It'd make battles that much more pleasurable.
I gotta say this looks a hell of a lot better than this Age of Empires Online bullshit.
Too bad I was always garbage at Age of Empires, though.
OOooooo it has a level editor.
Wololo campaign anyone?
Bumpin the shit out of this.
Man this game is so fun, I am eager to see what this will be like once they iron out the bugs and add a campaign in.
Looks like Age of Mythology if I'm honest.
This is not a bad thing.

AoM w/o mythical creatures
So this is like a 3d AoE2?
More like a 3D AoE1, AoE2 was the time period between the dark ages after Rome and Late-Renaissance, this is "0 A.D."
I've just been playing for a while and a few things I can say
A) Battering Rams are basically stupid powerful melee units they can plough through an army of champion melee units without taking much damage from their supporting archers.
B) Cavalry are some of the best food gatherers you can get they get a full carrying capacity of 30 food in only a few seconds, Ranged cavalry make incredible hunters, being able to easily get kills without the animals fleeing, melee cavalry don't do as well hunting deer but they can still get the job done. If you don't want to hunt deer, melee cavalry can still be used to gather meat from sheep at the same stupid fast rate.
C) keep a balanced workforce, entirely citizen-soldiers will be quickly outnumbered by stronger economies and a mostly female workforce will just get killed.
[sp]you can tell I'm trying to keep this thread going[/sp]

I meant gameplay-wise
I kind of hoped it to be an isometric RTS, but I'll check this out nonetheless.
Very fun, I played a multiplayer last night. It's badly optimized, but we could still run it with crappy rigs. Also, sometimes the AI is either incredibly stupid or ridiculously good. Could use some balancing there. Considering this is still just alpha, I'm excited for this games future.
Downloading now, worth a try at least!

It feels to me like the game itself runs fine, just that having more than 2 AI's just makes it freak out and run CPU usage through the roof.
Also, it doesn't seem like any of the AI's know how to use water, Islands is nigh impossible due to the huge numbers of soldiers they have stationed at their shores.
So does the MP work?
So does the MP work?
It does
I don't know if you've already read it, but there's also a feature for rejoining a game if you're disconnected. (unless the host has ended the game)
That Agree down there by Nod is because me and him have tested it.
[editline]If you can read this, you're quoting my post you fucking faggot, go die in a hole.[/editline]
I've still not tried any sort of PVP... or even any of the scenarios, only played random maps so far with either 1v1 Me v AI or coop 2 players v 2 AI.
My opinion on the bots, ignoring Test bot and Scaredy Bot
JuBot is kinda shit, it's reliable enough to not just die and stop working mid game, but they never attack, you can just sit there and get a steam-rolling army.
QBot is tough, but it's prone to deciding "I'm gonna die and look like an AFK player for the whole match". When it does work, they rush hard and fast, waves of units quickly weaken your economy to a crawl as your citizen soldiers fight them off. To beat it, I find it's best to focus your defence around towers and keep skirmishers ready to garrison them. Keep your workforce alive, don't waste citizen-soldiers fighting in defence, the enemy nearly always has a stronger economy, losing men is just making your economy weaker.
None of the bots appear to make any use of water, no transports, no fishing, nothing.
Update: There's a new release of 0AD.
bug fixes
splits the Celts faction into individual factions for The Britons and Gaul
other changes and improvements
and most importantly, Cheat-codes including "how do you turn this on?" and "wololo"
Is this MP only? Cause I don't like online RTS for some reason, i just like skirmish and shit,.

There is skirmish, I recomend you avoid using more than 3 maybe 4 AI's, the AI tends to be a bit of a performance eater.
