Launch Set of "Software" Titles Coming Sept 5
Aug 8, 2012 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the first set of Software titles are heading to Steam, marking a major expansion to the platform most commonly known as a leading destination for PC and Mac games.
The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.
More Software titles will be added in an ongoing fashion following the September 5th launch, and developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight.
"The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games," said Mark Richardson at Valve. "They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests."

If Valve happened to snag a deal with Adobe, their sales would skyrocket.
Sounds like steam could end up basically becoming an 'app store' for Windows/Mac. This could be interesting.

If they do have Photoshop on there, let's hope it's not for a ridiculous price
I'm not sure if I like this.
Sure, game DRM is okay, but if you'll need to use steam to run fucking CCleaner in the future, I'm going to be mad.

macs already have an app store
And Windows 8 does too
Oh and I hope they'll have a separate EULA for software.
I love steam, valve and Gabe but I'm still finding this ironic with the recent critics of Windows 8.

its not on mobile page anymore
There are so much software that I would just love to have tied to my steam account. So I wouldn't have to worry about which software is attach to what email when reinstalling it years later.
I still don't understand how they fucking dare charge upwards of $100 for software like Photoshop and music making software or whatever
no fucking wonder everyone's pirating it, noone's gonna pay you more than they paid for their goddamned OS to paste dog faces on people.

What about Linux Store?
Valve has already outed his concern that Mac and windows 8 are having a very closed platform. Maybe Gabe is trying to push linux to become more populair.

Think of the Steam Sales.. :D

They dare because they know they are the industries standard, there are alternatives out there but nobody is going to gimp or something.
A more reasonable price for consumer and student (non-profit)licenses would be around modern the price of games €50, €60~.
Luckily Autodesk offers 3 year free student licenses. I thank them for saving my wallet at least a bit.
900 TF2 hats for Adobe Photoshop... let's begin trading!

Isn't paint.net pretty much the same as photoshop only free?
Oh man I can't wait to add 10 seconds to CCleaner and Photoshop's launch time and have to jump through hoops just to use programs!
Isn't paint.net pretty much the same as photoshop only free?
To the casual user, maybe
If you're diving into Photoshop's actual features, Paint.net only begins to touch what Photoshop can do

That depends on if Steam will be required to be running for programs to work.
If it just downloads and installs then leaves it alone (until updates come along), I'd consider it.
I wonder how Microsoft and Apple will respond to this, and if it ever gets to linux, the open-source community.

I cannot wait for Stallman's massive rant on Steam for Linux
I like when all my stuff are in one place. I'm interested in this.

Industry standards. Students can get a major discount (80%).
Could this be part of why Gabe Newell dislikes the Windows 8 app store? I couldn't make sense of him thinking that Windows 8 metro applications would compete with Steam's games, but general software? Would make sense.
this is huge
Interesting. Very interesting...

Simple, photoshop ain't for pasting dog faces on people. It's original purpose is for designers, photographers etc to use it daily in a commercial way, that's why it is so expensive.
Finally Steam overlay is in my photoshop!
