Saints Row is a video game developed by Volition Inc. and published by THQ. Development on Saints Row started in early 2003. Saints Row was the first open world Sandbox game to be released on next-gen consoles. It was first released on the Xbox 360 on August 26th in North America, and September 1st in the U.K and other regions. A Playstation 3 port was canceled in 2007 to focus more on the sequel, Saints Row 2.
Box Art for Saints Row:

Saints Row takes place in a city named "Stilwater". Stilwater was modeled after Detroit and Chicago. The game begins where your unnamed protagonist is caught in a battle between the three gangs. After the battle is over, another gang, "The Third Street Saints" come to offer you a spot in their gang. Your character accepts and the game follows your character as he tries to bring down the rest of the gangs.
Gangs
3rd Street Saints - They wear purple, hideout is a church.
Los Carnales - Mostly mexican gang, they wear the color, red.
Vice Kings - Wear yellow, created to fight against the Carnales.
Rollerz - Made up of whites and asians, racing gang.
Respect
Respect is a system in which to unlock Story missions. To earn Respect, you need to play some of the different mini-games. You can also receive Respect based on your clothing. When you complete a mission while wearing gang-appropriate clothing, you can get the "Clothing Bonus" and earn extra respect.
Activities
There are many activities, or, "Mini-Games" throughout the world of Stilwater. Completing these activities can earn you respect and completing certain levels of the activity can earn you special clothing, tattoos, jewelry, and other bonuses.
Customization
In Saints Row, there are a ton of customization options for your male character. Unfortunately, though, you can only be a male character in the game. You can edit your facial structure in immense detail. There are many places to shop for new clothes in Stilwater. You can change your hair, facial hair, tattoos, and jewelry as well in the game. You also have the free choice to customize your car with paint jobs and more. You can also buy in-game music at stores to use for your Mp3 player. The customization in this game seems endless.
DLC
The only real DLC that Saints Row had was addition clothing. In September of 2006, the, "Funky Fresh Pack" was released for 100 MS Points, which added 23 new clothing and tattoo items for Singleplayer and Mutliplayer. In December of the same year, the "Ho Ho Ho Pack" was released adding Santa Clause clothing to the game, which was free. In 2007, the "Unkut Pack" was released adding a ton of new clothing styles designed by Unkut.
Plot (From Wikipedia) *Spoilers*
Saints Row begins with the player (an unnamed character) in the fictional metropolitan city of Stilwater, based on cities such as Detroit and Chicago, in the middle of a gang war between several gang factions. Though he attempts to maintain distance, he witnesses a fight between the 3 major gangs. Members from one gang attempt to gun him down; however, the 3rd Street Saints, led by Julius Little, step in and save him. Julius informs the player that he formed the Saints to bring down the other three gangs with the goal of returning peace to the streets. After proving himself to the Saints, he's initiated into the gang and then asked to assist them in taking over the city from three gangs in the city. Los Carnales, the Westside Rollerz and the Vice Kings. The player, over the course of the game, assists in several missions and stronghold takeovers against each rival gang, slowly bringing the entire city under control by the Saints. Because of the three different gangs, there are three linear plots that deal with the conquest of each gang, though events in one plot do not affect any of the other plots. In the end, the player is able to defeat the boss and several of the lieutenants of each rival gang and brings all of Stilwater under the Saints' control. The game apparently ends when the player receives a call from Julius, who tells the player that he is the new "right hand man". However, he implies that he is about to be arrested by corrupt cops, who were waiting for the gang wars to end before they made their move against the Saints. At this point, other members of the Saints ask the player for their orders.
After a shortened version of the credits, featuring only the voice actors in the game, and the game appears to be completed, the player is allowed to engage in three "epilogue" missions, resulting in attacks on the mayor and the corrupt police chief in order to try to free Julius from prison. Once the mayor is dead, the player is invited to the private yacht of Alderman Richard Hughes, the only other candidate for mayor in the upcoming election. Hughes thanks the player for eradicating his political rival for him, planning to use his mayoral power to destroy the Saints. Before the player can respond to Hughes' ultimatum, the yacht explodes, leaving the player's character's fate in question as the game ends.
[sp]At the end of the credits, you can hear your character rise up and take a breath of air, hinting at a sequel.[/sp]

Saints Row 2 is the sequel to Saints Row and is also made by Volition Inc and published by THQ. It was released for 360 and PS3 in October 2008. A PC port was released January 2009. Three DLC's have been released for the console versions of the game.
The game takes place 5 years after the first game. Your main character has just awaken from a coma, which was caused by the boat explosion. in the first game. The game, again, takes place in the city of Stilwater, which changed a lot from the first. The game is about your main character rebuilding the 3rd Street Saints after they have been disbanded during the time of your coma. Three new games came along and your mission is to wipe all three out, as well as stop the cities main power, Ultor.
The game introduced a whole new co-op system, where you can play the entire singleplayer game with a friend.
The game also added more vehicle types that were absent from the first game, including Motorcycles, boats, helicopters, and planes.
Saints Row 2 also gave you the option to play as a female character, an option that was people wanted in the first game.
Again, the game offers a vast amount of customization options. You can be a man with breats, and wear a bra and a skirt if you wanted to. The customization is almost endless.
New activities gave players much more replay value. Septic Avenger and Crowd Control are two new additions to the game. In Septic Avenger, you fire shit into the public, ruining buildings, cars, people, and more. In Crowd Control, you play as a bodyguard protecting a celebrity from hasslers. You can almost anything to them. Or if you want a shorter activity to do, you can strip down and go flashing in the public.

Map+Territory

3rd Street Saints: Again, the main gang in the game. This time, though, you are the leader of the gang with your partner Johnny Gat. Again, you wear the color Purple. Your new hideout is an underground abandoned hotel. As the story progresses, your hideout will get upgraded and you will unlock new gang styles, like Ninja or Bodyguard styles.
Sons of Samedi: This gang is a huge drug focused gang who reside in the Green territory on the map above. They, obviously, wear green.
The Ronin: An asian/motorcycle based gang, they mainly reside in the yellow as seen above. They are most famous for their samurai combat.
The Brotherhood: In red, the brotherhood have the big monster trucks. They are mainly of the white and black race. The gang has a fascination for big guns and tattoos.
Respect (from wikipedia)
The Respect system is a scoring system where the player earns Respect points to unlock missions and progress through the storyline. The player can partake in storyline and stronghold missions only after filling up at least one bar of Respect, and Respect points are removed when the player starts a mission. The 'style rank' is a modifier of how much Respect the player can earn; this is increased by purchasing items for the player character. Respect points can be earned in two ways; by progressing through side-missions called Activities and by completing mini-games and stunts called Diversions.
There are a broad range of Activities and Diversions available for the player to progress through. Many of the game's Activities made appearance in Saints Row and a variety of new Activities have also been introduced in the game. Examples include an underground fight club, a parody of the COPS television show known as FUZZ and numerous others. Each Activity can be initiated from various locations and plays out over six levels of increasing difficulty. The Activities have been designed to suit solo and co-operative play. Most Diversions do not have specific start points. There are numerous Diversions playable in the game, such as acts of indecent exposure, combat and driving stunts, car surfing and a survival horror mini-game called Zombie Uprising.
Plot (from wikipedia) *MAJOR STORY SPOILERS
At the end of Saints Row, the protagonist was put into a trauma-induced coma after an attempted assassination while aboard a luxury yacht. Five years pass and the protagonist awakes in a prison hospital ward and received extensive plastic surgery. The protagonist meets inmate Carlos Mendoza and the pair escape the island and return to the protagonist's home city Stilwater, rebuilt by the Ultor Corporation. The protagonist then rescues friend Johnny Gat from a courtroom proceeding, enlists the help of Johnny's friends Pierce and Shaundi and begins to rebuild the divided 3rd Street Saints gang. The protagonist, referred to as the Boss, leads the Saints on a quest to retake the city. The main storyline is divided into three separate story mission arcs, completable at any time and in any order.
In one story arc, the Boss and Carlos meet with Maero, leader of the Brotherhood and becomes enraged at Maero's offer of a 20/80 split of an unknown shipment between the Saints and the Brotherhood. This sparks a feud between the Saints and the Brotherhood, and after shaking up mechanic and Brotherhood member Donnie, a former Westside Roller, the Boss burns Maero's face by poisoning his tattoo ink with radioactive waste. The Brotherhood retaliate by kidnapping and brutally injuring Carlos by dragging him behind a truck, forcing the Boss to euthanize him. The Boss exacts revenge by kidnapping Maero's girlfriend Jessica, and arranges for her to be inadvertently killed by Maero in a monster truck rally. After interrogating Maero's tattoo artist Matt, the Boss begins to uncover information about a large weapons shipment. Maero confronts Dane Vogel, CEO of the Ultor Corporation, demanding the release of arrested Brotherhood members. Although freed, the prisoners are intercepted by the Boss and when an enraged Maero threatens Vogel, he is informed that Vogel will seize the weapons shipment. The Boss intercepts the shipment and launches an attack on the crippled Brotherhood's Hideout. Near the end of the battle, Matt is killed but Maero and Donnie escape. Maero then challenges the Boss to a final face-off, but loses the fight and is shot in the head by the Boss.
In another story arc, Shaundi begins to gather information on the Sons of Samedi gang, and learns of their illegal drug trade. The Saints then target various assets in the production of the 'Loa Dust' drug. Gang leaders The General and Mr. Sunshine order lieutenant Veteran Child to kill Shaundi, a former girlfiend. Although he succeeds in kidnapping her, the Boss kills him and saves her. The General then kidnaps the Boss and orders an attack on the Saints, but the Boss escapes and the Saints are able to hold off the attack. Through tips from an addict, the Boss uncovers Mr. Sunshine's hiding place, a meat-packing plant, and the Boss kills him there. The Saints then co-ordinate an attack on the General's convoy and kill him as he flees.
As Johnny and Pierce assist the Boss to take down the Ronin gang in a story arc, they identify various rackets the Saints can hit to recover territory. However, their activity does not go unnoticed by the Ronin and leader Shogo Akuji orders an attack on Johnny and his girlfriend, retired R'n'B singer Aisha, resulting in her death at the hands of Shogo's older brother and henchman Jyunichi. Shogo's father and international Ronin leader Kazuo Akuji arrives in Stilwater and after Jyunichi is killed in a face-off with the protagonist, disgraces his son and shows regret at giving him power over the Ronin. At Aisha's funeral, Shogo attacks Johnny and the Boss but is prematurely buried after being captured. Kazuo threatens the Boss' longtime friend and leader of the Triads gang, Mr. Wong. Kazuo is killed by the Boss during a Chinese New Year's celebration after being bested in a swordfight.
In the aftermath, Dane Vogel uses the Saints' overthrow of the city to stage a coup d'état within Ultor, indirectly convincing the Boss to kill the rest of the board. However, when Vogel attempts to take control of Ultor, the Saints stage an assassination attempt at a press conference. After fleeing to safety in the Philips Building, Vogel is met face-to-face by the Boss, and he shoots him in the mouth, killing him instantly, crippling the Ultor Corporation and ensuring the city under the Saints' control. Wiretap conversations reveal that of the surviving members of the old Saints, Dex Jackson took up a job offer with Ultor, and that former Saints' leader Julius Little planted the bomb from the original game's climax hoping to kill the Boss and let the Saints dissolve, through threats from undercover cop Troy Bradshaw. A mission becomes available and the Boss contacts Dex, who tells the Boss to meet him at the old Saints' church. Upon arrival, the Boss finds Julius, who was also told by Dex to meet there. The two are ambushed by Ultor security forces and are forced to flee. Having escaped, the Boss kills Julius as revenge for losing five years of his life.
DLC
Volition released 3 DLC packs for Saints Row 2, only for the 360 and PS3. The first two DLC's expanded the story while the last added a variety of clothing styles.
Ultor Exposed: This DLC is mainly about exposing the wrongdoings of Ultor to the public. You are paired with porn star Tera Patrick to expose the real Ultor to the public. The DLC also adds new facial hair, hair, tons of new costumes and clothing, as well as 6 new vehicles, one being the EDF Scout from Red Faction: Guerrilla.
(From Wikipedia)
Tera Patrick meets with The Protagonist at the Saints Hideout and reveals that she knows some of the Ultor Corporation's dark secrets. The Protagonist, not wanting to pass the chance of exposing Ultor, agrees to help Tera out. The Protagonist digs up the bodies of discarded test subjects (The discarded bodies look like the zombies from the Saints Row 2 diversion Zombie Uprising) from a nanorobotics experiment as evidence. However, the press refuses to run the story and so the two hijack a truck containing chemicals that Ultor used in the experiments. News reporter Jane Valderamma is met by The Protagonist and says that she wants an interview with Tera if she is going to run the story. Tera, who fears being on live TV, begrudgingly agrees and when Tera is interviewed, Jane deliberately turns the interview on Tera after Tera tells that she was the one who conducted the experiments. After the interview, Tera promises Jane that she will find a way to expose Ultor, even without her.
Corporate Warfare: This DLC is mainly about your character trying to take down former Saint, "Dex". Dex now works as head of security for Ultor Corporation.
The DLC added a variety of new Clothing and vehicles, and also added Infinite Rocket Launcher Ammo for beating the whole DLC.
Head of the Ultor Corporation and successor to Dane Vogel, Eric Gryphon, requests protection from the 3rd Street Saints in exchange for information on Dex Jackson,[3] an original lieutenant for the Saints who now works as Ultor's head of security.[2] After meeting with The Boss at the Saints' hideout, Eric meets with Dex saying that he is unafraid of Dex's attempts to kill him. Eric reveals to The Boss that Dex has been selling nuclear waste on the black market and is using the Ultor Masako Team to cover up the evidence. The Boss then steals the waste from the nuclear power plant and steals it for himself, betraying Eric and crippling Dex's finances. Dex abandons his position in Stilwater and requests a job transfer, fleeing to another city. The Boss learns of this through Eric, who in turn helps The Boss eliminate key associates of Dex. The Boss then reveals to Eric that he will find out which city Dex fled to and kill him, a hint about a possible sequel.
Unkut Pack: This DLC was released for free, and mainly added a whole bunch of clothing to the game.

SAINTS ROW 2 BAD PC PERFORMANCE FIX
Thanks to Idolninja:
There's actually a few performance tweaks you can do to get it running well. The biggest issue the game has is streaming chunks of the city from the hard drive into memory. As soon as the game hit the hdd for anything, performance goes right in the toilet. Your goal is to try and get the game to use as much memory as possible so that it minimizes its hard drive usage. Strangely enough, sr2 is not aggressive enough in asking for Windows to give up prefetched memory, and also generally will not create a .pf file unless you force it.
NOTE: Windows Vista/Win 7 Only:
So, the first thing to try is delete the entire contents of c:\windows\prefetch\ and reboot the pc. After reboot, run sr2 and confirm that it creates a .pf file for the sr2 exe in that folder. Yes, I know it's weird and shouldn't work like that. Sr2 is the only game/app I've ever seen that will not get memory from Windows itself giving up other prefetched app's mem, but every single member of our Penny Arcade SR2 group had major performance improvements by doing it.
The other tweaks you can try are:
* Disable Motion Blur
* Disable Ambient Occlusion
* Disable Windows page file
To run smoothly, SR2 needs ~2.5Gb free memory (not being prefetched by other apps) so you really need a system with at least 4Gb of RAM total and running a 64bit OS. Or, you could get a solid state drive which has amazing performance and seek times which should improve performance for any system. An alternative would be to get a couple of fast 7200rpm drives with <4ms seek and set them up RAID 0 (striping for performance.)
Here's the original post on Penny Arcade where I discovered the issue. Later posts in that thread have additional testing info:

Saints Row: Drive-by
A game announced for the 3DS. Not much is know about it. As soon as more info comes out, I will update the OP.
Update 1
http://community.saintsrow.com/
Since E3 ended two weeks ago, there's been quite a number of Saints Row related announcements in the news. One of biggest, a Saints Row game coming to the Nintendo 3DS, was already revealed directly below this post. Recently though, more information has come to the surface.
The Saints Row game on Nintendo 3DS is now tentatively titled "Saints Row: Drive By". At this time, we're not releasing any information about what sort of game play you will be experiencing within this new title, but be sure to check back in the future for more. Danny Bilson, VP of Core Gaming for THQ, also stated that a version of "Saints Row: Drive By" will be released for XBL and PSN in the future as well.
Update 2
Saints Row: Drive By will connect Saints Row 2 and 3.
"Nintendo particularly wanted an 'M' rated game for 3DS's launch. We had it in production - we were doing a 3D version on XBL of Saint's Row: Drive By.
"We haven't announced any of this yet, exactly. But it's all part of the plan leading to Saint's Row 3, and all of the games connect. So if you play one it unlocks stuff in the big game and back and forth and all that stuff."

"We don't compete with GTA. We're differentiating even further with GTA with this one," Bilson said. "The new Saint's Row will be less urban - it's definitely not about 'gangsta' anymore at all. And it's more fun and almost sillier and wackier and weirder than the other one."
"The only thing it has in common with GTA is open world, tonnes of options for the player and a certain amount of crime. But even in the new game, it's not exactly like that either. There are new gangs in a new world and it's not just about criminals."
Saints Row 3
Saints Row 3 was supposed to be shown at E3 2010, but they cut it from the floor to be shown at Spikes award show in December. It is expected to be released between April 2011 and April 2012. As soon as more info is released, I will update this post or create a whole separate thread, depending on the situation.
Saints Row 3 is rumored to be in 3D.
Wiki Article:
Saints Row 3 is the third standalone game in the series and is expected to be released in the 2012 financial year.[60] While nothing of the game's content has been revealed yet, it will utilise major upgrades that Volition have conducted on their game engine, and will take the series in a "new direction"; Volition associate producer Dan Sutton said in an October 2008 interview that "in Saints Row 2 we tie-up a lot of loose ends. I think we tie it up deliberately. We’ve already started work on Saints Row 3, and we have a new direction we want to go in with that which we of course can’t talk about. We wrap up a lot in this one. There’s no frustration".
Saints Row 2's downloadable content pack Corporate Warfare hints that the game will possibly revolve around the protagonist's hunt for character Dex Jackson in a city far from the familiar Stilwater setting of the first two games in series.
THQ vice president Danny Bilson revealed that the game would make its debut at E3 2010 in a December 2009 interview, promising it to be "mind-blowing". At THQ's fiscal third quarter conference in February 2010, CEO Brian Farrell announced that the game was expected to be released during the 2012 financial year; between April 2011 and April 2012.
During E3 2010, Bilson revealed that THQ had made the decision to pull Saints Row 3 from the show at the last minute, in order to allow developer Volition time to "rebuild tech". He said "I'm not going to show it to you today. This is the only room we're talking about Saints Row 3. We're not showing it on the floor because the rollout starts in December on Saints Row 3 [...] We've spent an extra year rebuilding the technology for this game. It is absolutely gorgeous and still completely insane." He revealed that the game will make its debut at the Spike TV Awards in December 2010. Bilson also revealed that there will be "the most robust transmedia play on any game ever done", which includes plans to release a live action Saints Row film as well as various merchandise such as a collectible card game and books. The film could possibly feature American rapper 50 Cent as he revealed that he was in talks with THQ to produce a Saints Row film in February 2009
The Saints Row film has in fact, been confirmed.
TL;DR: an awesome video game series you NEED to try out.
I love these games, I have both of them for the 360. Though ingame advertisements in number 2 can blow me.
Good thread, congrats, lots of useful stuff, convinced me to go get game.
Try to avoid the PC version, I heard plenty of bad things about it.
I've played the first one on Xbox and own the second one for it too.
I beat both of them on co-op with my brother on the Xbox. Great fun, but I remember the co-op being ridiculously buggy. Still managed to have fun, though. I hate the people that compare it to GTA 4 and then say it's bad because it's unrealistic. It's not supposed to be realistic, it's supposed to be fun -- and there is a lot of things that wouldn't be fun if it was realistic.
Saints Row 2 is a great game, although I remember the AI being extremely dumb. [sp]The Ronin AI stole my kill and an epic boss battle. It hit the leader of the Ronin gang with a exploding car.[/sp]
Try to avoid the PC version, I heard plenty of bad things about it.
And terrible performance.
I played it on with my Phenom 965 x4 @ 3.4GHZ and a Radeon 4870 not a long while ago, the FPS sucked hard - everything on low-med with 15-30 fps max.
The multiplayer part was far better in the first saints row. "Protect the pimp" was great.
I have this on PC and the driving is godawful
And terrible performance.

I play with a 3870 and I get fine FPS on it.
Both games are fun but they get real boring real quick as soon as the campaign ends.
I don't know about the other versions, but the PC version makes SR2 seem like an absolutely horrible game. It's incredibly badly optimized, the controls are incredibly awkward, the car handling makes it impossible to drive without hitting every car or other object in the road and it's overall a terrible port. In fact, I'd say that SR2 is one of the worst PC ports anyone has ever made.
Too bad it runs like poop on my GTX 260.
Crysis on High? Pfft.
Company of Heroes on high? Easy.
GTA IV on high? Bit tricky, but manageable.
Saints row 2 on very low? FUCK FUCK! GET OUT OF THERE! OH GOD MY MOTHERBOARD IS MELTING FUCK FUCK FUCK

That describes it pretty well.
And it also somehow manages to look like a game from 2003 or something on very low while still requiring a more powerful PC then GTAIV does.
I had no problems with the PC port. It ran fine on high.

What the fuck kind of supercomputer do you have?
Mine can run pretty much all new games on high without having low FPS, yet running SR2 on high gives me like 20 FPS sometimes.
I've got Saint's Row 2 on Xbox with all of the DLC. It's a blast. I think I'll hop on it for a bit.
I loved both of them.
Shame they didn't release the DLC for PC.
Ah I have to buy SR2 again some time, I had a great laugh with 'agoat' from here on it, he showed me the cheats on the game, fucking epic.
The developers are awesome to, head over to the official site.
I've played the shit out of SR2. Great game, I love the cutscenes and the english accent of the main character.
I wish I could play this, it runs like utter shit on my computer. Complete shit, it freezes and my FPS hits 1 whenever I sprint or turn a corner.
It took me a month to be able to log into multiplayer games. And the only one I was able to join was pretty lame. But the singleplayer was fun.
coop saints row 2 with a friend is really fun
I fucking love this game. I have replayed it like 4 times already and it is still fun every time. But I have only beaten the game once because the fucking last mission has a damn helicopter section and I really suck at flying helicopters.
I would love to play co-op with my friends on the xbox but they dont have gold memberships or the game so it's only single player for me.
This game looks worse than a PS1 game on the lowest settings and has the optimization of a rocky cliff face.
Saint's Row 1 was the reason why I got an xbox 360 to begin with. And I didn't regret it because saint's row 2 was even better with coop campaign. This is a good thread.
The PC version runs okay now with patches. I can run it with my Phenom X4 and 9800GTX+ and 3gb of usable RAM.

I assume the Steam Version is fully patched? Because mine runs like shit.
