• PC Demos, a dying race

What is up with game devs and PC demos these days? I mean, if they make them for the consoles, why not make them for the PC's while they're at it. PC demos would ultimately profit the game devs. For example, a PC Demo would cut down on the piracy, seeing as some people just download the game to see if it's worth buying, or to simply benchmark the game. It makes no sense what so ever. How does one fix this bullshittery?
What, they still have console game demos? For new games and not just already released games? Wow, where have I been?

A friends of mine did pirate a lot and told me how lucky he was was that he didn't pay money for something. When he enjoyed a game he bought it, just to be able to play the multiplayer as well or to support the devs out of a feel of guilt. Pirated servers would suck anyway I think. Probably piracy is sometimes a form of illegally playtesting a game before buying it, at lest for a few people. Look how many are curious to check out the Crysis 2 beta, though it still has a lot of debug notes in it by the devs and my be buggy.

People want to know what they're going into, and since the game doesn't have a demo they have to pirate.
The Crysis 2 leak could be considered a good thing. Everyone is saying good things about the game even though it is unstable.
A game is a pretty large investment for a lot of people, it takes a lot of time and a lot of money, if it's no good for whatever reason then you're screwed. Demos are great except the Kane and Lynch 2 one, it showed like the best and most amazing part of the game and then the rest wasn't like that at all.
The Crysis 2 leak could be considered a good thing. Everyone is saying good things about the game even though it is unstable.
Except Crytek is getting no profit
Except Crytek is getting no profit
Except more people will be inclined to buy it.
Crytek will be fine. They won't lose many sales at all. Those who were originally intending to buy it will still do so because of multiplayer and bug fixes. Those who had no intention of buying it on release don't count as a lost sale as they weren't gonna buy it anyway, leak or no leak. They will only lose sales by people who were going to buy it playing the leak, and changing their mind, which is highly doubtful due to the quality of the game and how long they have been waiting for it.
Wait, the PC demo is a dying race? I remember buying magazines that came with a CD with 30+ demos, some trailers and one or two complete games..
I guess demos are less of a priority since pretty much everyone can watch trailers, read reviews and such. Still nothing beats a hands-on session if you're still doubtful.

Just Cause 2 would never have sold so many copies if it wasn't for the demo :colbert:
Except Crytek is getting no profit
They wouldn't from a demo.
Wait, the PC demo is a dying race? I remember buying magazines that came with a CD with 30+ demos, some trailers and one or two complete games..
Hell, I got Deus Ex from a PC Gamer CD/DVD.
Just Cause 2 would never have sold so many copies if it wasn't for the demo :colbert:
Some demos have sold me games like this others have turned me off them. I do find it a bit annoying when there's console demos but no pc demo while I can still play them its not on my platform of choice and I guess it must be as the pc market is much smaller and so not appearing to be worth it.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: PC demos take much more time to make than console demos because the PC requires more resources to account for different hardware and graphics settings. Most dev's can't be fucked with the extra work.
The way I see it is, PC needs demos. Users need to see if they can run the game or not. Consoles don't need them specifically because it's guaranteed to run.
Steam does a few, but there are far less than there used to be...
I miss jumping onto Filefront, Fileplanet, whatever to look for new game demos. It just never happens anymore.
I'd say PC's are more in need of Demo's that Consoles as, with PCs, you need to factor in the hardware side. Not only does the demo let you know if the game's any good and worth a purchase, but it also lets you know how well you'll run it, recommended specifications only tell you so much.
Freelancer demo sold me, Halo Demo sold me, Half-life 2 Demo sold me, and many more demos got me to buy a game.

Come on, not everybody can't have DX10/11 and what you come up with again this year. Whilst he can run other new games in max resolution.
Freelancer demo sold me, Halo Demo sold me, Half-life 2 Demo sold me, and many more demos got me to buy a game.
Just Cause 2, COD:W@W, Spore Creature Creator, all games I had no interest in but got hooked on the demo so I bought them. [editline]12th February 2011[/editline] Infact, I PREORDERED the special edition of Spore.
WaW has a PC demo? link JC2's demo made me go out and buy it if it weren't for the demo I wouldn't have done it same with combat evolved same with ARMA2 same with world of goo
Except Crytek is getting no profit
Probably because the game isn't out yet
Well, at one point I bought far cry 2 just because I thought it would be awesome. I then found out that my computer couldn't run it well at all (FPS was always between 1-30, rarely going higher than 15). So I kind of wasted 50 dollars on a game that I could barely play and even then wasn't all that good. I was way over the minimum requirements, too. My computer just couldn't play it well. There was like a few hundreds of people at the Ubisoft forums having the same problem as me. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have made such a mistake if there had been a Demo. I wonder why Ubisoft never released one.
Except Crytek is getting no profit
the games not released yet thats why dummy
I personally think PC game demos are just getting too damn big to conveniently download. You spend more time downloading and using up all your bandwidth for a few hours than you actually evaulate and play the demo - I mean, you can look up relevant system requirements and look on forums to see if someone with a computer like you runs the game anyway You still do see a bunch of demos they're just on other platforms - most notably phones with their 'lite' apps
