Every ones favorite rougelike!
What the shit is this shit?
Stone Soup is a roguelike modification to an old rougelike called Dungeon Crawl. Stone soup is being updated every day, even as we speak they are rigorously trying to produce version 0.8.
What is this rougelike? And what is it like?
A roguelike is pretty much just a game that usually uses ascii characters to depict everything in an dungeon. Its a normal formula to do these things.
1. Create a character. Depending on which rougelike you are playing this could be either just picking your race and class. Or in some games its something more robust like picking how long your toenails are and what flavor icecream you like to eat.
2. Enter the world. Most rougelikes take place in a single dungeon, however some take place in a world map and work like oblivion or fallout.
3. Try to play the game. Each rougelike normally has its own set of controls, however there are some universal controls. Oh and I forgot to mention how playing a rougelike is like taking off and landing in a flight simulator on super realistic mode (it uses every key on the keyboard).
4. Instantly die by a monster. Rougelikes are hard as shit. Most of them are un forgiving and try to kill you at every possible time. You can even die from falling down the stairs if you health is low enough. Thus brings the phrase from rougelike players "YASD" or yet another stupid death. Did I mention most rougelikes feature perma death? As in if you die you have to restart, everything.
Ok, now on to stone soup

I recommend clicking "Download Unified (Tiles + Console) Installer" so you can try both the tiles and acsii versions.
After installing that shit I suggest launching the tiles version (which includes some pretty first class tiles! Some of the best in a rougelike.)
How to play this shit
The game features a tutorial, which I haven't played, but I suggest you play it. I couldn't possibly explain every feature in the game however! Lucky for you, this game features an awesome community run wiki page!

This game is not forgiving, this game does not care anything about you or your life, all it wants to do is kill you. Don't plan on beating the game within your first month of playing.
I suggest you guys play something like a Mountain Dwarf fighter. Pretty strait forward.
You move with the numpad.
You automatically have auto pickup turned on, so you will automatically pick up scrolls, money, potions, and ammo if you have a ranged weapon. However this will not pick up weapons or armor. You can turn auto pickup off by pressing ctrl + a I believe. You pick shit up manually by pressing ','.
Something you can do is use auto explore which is pressing 'o' on your keyboard. I don't really suggest doing this at the start, although after you play a lot of this pretty vital.
Every item you get is unidentified. You can identify items a few ways. You can use a scroll of identification on an item, however the scroll of identification is also unidentified.
Or you can just start reading unidentified scrolls, which can do a plethora of things, including cursing you armor and weapons, exploding, and teleporting you into a giant mob of enemies! You read by pressing 'r'.
You can start quaffing potions to find the affects of those, but like scrolls, you can also get some crazy results. Including gaining mutations (good and bad!), which is unique to this game. Quaff potions by pressing 'q'.
Weapons and armor you will identify over time by using it in combat, or, as stated before, use a scroll of identification.
If you are ever wounded you need to either heal yourself with a potion (which is a waste and you should only use those if you are in an emergency). Or you can wait. You wait by pressing 'ctrl+numpad 5' or 'shift +numpad 5' I forgot. Waiting is just pressing skip turn over and over again until your health and mp regen all the way.
You also need food in this game, you get food from premade rations you can find, or by chopping up corpses. 'c' is how you chop corpses up, you also need a knife. Unless you are a troll, kobold, and a few other races, you won't be able to eat raw meat unless you are hungry. Spell casting and abilities also cost food, so be careful.
"Help, I'm poisoned!" This happens a lot most of the time you can wait it out, however if it is an emergency you should quaff a potion of healing which will remove your poison status.
Having a god in this game is also important! And they can do a bunch of really cool things. See god page on wiki. But in short, there are 10 or so gods, they are all unique some like sacrifices some don't. Some give abilities and others give items. And some help you in combat etc etc.
You can figure the rest out on your own. press '?' in game to get a help menu. Or see the wiki.

If you have time to blow, this is a pretty good time sink!
I'm being chased by some orc goblin thing, how do I attack it?
Love this game. I only play it via PuTTy these days. Still never gotten close to getting the Orb
I'm a minotaur berserker, kicking some serious ass with Trog

Minotaur berserker is really noob friendly. When ever you are in a bind press 'a' then press 'a' again to go zerker mode. You kill shit fast as hell.
Wow this is fun, I fail though, I starved to death last playthough.
Played this game before. It's p entertaining. Copy builds from the highscore table if you're having a shit time.
Holy shit, I was just killed by the ghost of my first character, I didn't know that could happen :ohdear:

Ha. Ha. Ha.
New player... so much fun... ah yes.
Yeah your BEST character ever. Will and can, come back fully pissed off to shit down the throat of your new character who probably isn't as good as your old character.
I usually do pretty well as Vampire Assassin/Artificer/Necromancer.
Start as your choice of race, chaos knight of xom, first action is to revoke your religion.
Enjoy playing a warrior with slightly less HP but sweet +2/+2 items.
Anyone else like the god of slowness?
Jessica is an ugly ho.
God I love this game.
Been playing it for a long ass time, and I still haven't beaten it.
Best game I've ever had was caused by an accident, too. I was a minotaur berserker('cause I felt like trying one of the ones suggested by Hints Mode) and I fell down a random shaft. It brought be 3 or 4 levels below me, and I started climbing back up. Died on D:9 I think.
I like Incursion more, Mainly because of the D&D-esque feel of skills and all. Still, this one is damn awesome too.
I have a question, is there a purpose to the gold you find? Doesn't really seem like it to me.

There are shops positioned throughout the dungeon where you can buy crap. For whatever reason, you can't sell anything, though.
Mountain Dwarf berserker represent :v: Easiest class to play at the beginning, and I've gotten so used to it that I play as that all the time now.

What he meant to say was enjoy being killed by whatever Xom spawns to kill you.

Xom is a lazy pissant. Normally he won't smite you.

Yeah he only smites you whenever you do good, butterflies anyone?
DAMN YOU GHOSTS OF MY GAMES, STOP KILLING ME.

Every time I've come across sigmund I've wrecked his shit. Is this good?

Depends what loot he drops. The crazy hermit is my favourite enemy though. Although his quarterstaff is WAY too dangerous for a serious play through.
This game is perfect to play at school after you finish your assignments. Load it up on a USB, go to class, then when you have free time after typing up your essay whip this out and start slashing and hacking away :v:

Ah highschoolers, the golden days. IWBTG is a good choice too.

Crazy Yiuf? Hes not too bad. Especially if you are a beserker or a wizard. Cloud him to confuse them then go to town. Or berserk him to death.

He has the highest count of kills in the game of any unique. Thats why he is kinda infamous.
Mainly because he goes invisible, which is really hard to deal with at low levels.

I remember playing incursion. It was pretty fun.
However, crawl just seems so much more complete imo.
I died in the tutorial. Fuck it, I don't wanna play this game any more. :saddowns:
Lemme guess, you died against either Sigmund or the Pandemonium boss?
That's as far as the tutorial goes, if you get past Sigmund you're dropped into a room with a demon from Pandemonium. If you defeat or escape it all you get is "How in the world did you defeat/escape from that Pandemonium boss?" and it drops you in an empty dungeon with no enemies or items.
I used wizard mode on the tutorial lololololol

No I died against a training dummy because I didn't know how to attack and he kept throwing stones at me. :saddowns:

You walk toward it or you hold control and then the direction on numpad. You should continue on, once you learn how to play roguelikes, it gives you acess to a whole new medium of entertainment.
