What are your views on private servers? - Games

What do you feel about private servers? Try to explain why you feel the way you do.

Utterly despise them unless they are actually private, or uses for machinima etc.

They should only be used for machinima or general pissing around, anyone who actually plays on one is a tosser.

From my experience, they are shit. Shitty communities, mainly people who want to be imba, because they cannot in game. Laggy and buggy as shit. I don't see how people can play them seriously. Retail, is just [b]so[/b] much better.

Can be somewhat fun if you can't play retail, but the servers now suck compared to the old ones imo.

I'd make my own and just go solo because i enjoy it. Sometimes, especially with Warcraft, the atmosphere of being on your own makes me nostalgia and no one to bother you. Not like you run into much people in the official servers anyway.

If theyre not Instant Level 80 with 10x Drop rate they can actually be fun.

I liked using them to just mess around with mates, but otherwise they suck.

My personal experience with them was horrible, which in turn led me to go ahead and join the official Blizzard servers. I think it was WoWscape which I played for a while then realized the server had like 100 player online at most - thus all cities were deserted. Like trying to interact with people in a ghost town.

Well, I do say that I like them, Mainly because I host one myself but some are more fun, but the fun doesn't last as long as a lot of them have higher exp and item gain but some are just shit and have a terrible amount of players resulting is one thing. Impossible to raid. But for a free alternative to paying, what can you expect, But people who say they have high downtime and high ping... you guys are idiots, it's not hard to find a good server, those shitty servers are hosted by 12 year olds who are only allowed to get a 512kb internet connection. They are also dick heads who ban you for saying that you don't like there shitty custom weapons and instant lvl 255 style. but if you find a good server, don't complain. it's a free alternative.

Blizzlike private servers are a joke and funservers aren't like how they used to be. Back before BC funservers were actually fun to play if wow got stale. Private servers were fun because of the high level cap and tons of custom content and areas, but now the definition of funserver is instant 80, free everything, mindless pvp in guribashi arena, and overpowered donation weapons.

The server I was database manager on during WotLK Alpha, was a pretty successful fun server. We had GM events, and vendors with all the Northrend gear (for free) as it got leaked, there were guards in most new popular Northrend areas to make sure there is no random PvP/ganking going on. It was awesome.

I could see myself starting one just to dick around and do 1v1 boss fights. Other than that I find them useless.

Me and my friend made one as a 'zombie survival' Basicly you got a hunter, no pets, guns only, some ammo and the dwarven quarter in stormwind barricaded, rest of the areas is full of zombies, took some damn time to make them respawn, its acctualy fun being overun by them :D

I joined a Instant 80 server yesterday where they made you earn gear and such, hacked my way to GM Island. It was full of vendors with horribly OP GM gear, I had fun attacking people from under ground. Then I got banned.

As Caps lock said, if you play seriously on a private server, you're a dumbass.

I found a really good private server once, by accident. I nostalgia'd when I saw the advert then attempted to login, found I was permanently banned because my account had been hacked and used to sell gold. Got annoyed and went to play some private - found a really fun instant 80 one where it was more of a social thing. Very friendly playerbase. Would go and raid and end up chatting to the horde and stuff through /me. And I did get my account back. I am now debating whether to re-sub. The amazing guild I was in might not be there anymore... MOORDHUIS OF AZUREMYSTE IF YOU ARE ALIVE I MISS YOU :( If there's anyone on Azuremyste and you can convince me to join you, I'll probably re-sub. The only character I have left though is a level 16 gnome mage LOL.

They're not even fun for dicking around really. I've tried loads of them and they're all the same. Free stupidly powerful items for everyone!! but wait!! if you become a platinum member you get even more stupidly powerful items!!
