What is Gothic?

Gothic is a really good Action RPG series developed intially by Piranha Bytes and distributed by Jowood, but then Jowood got scared and said "you're moving with your auntie and uncle in the isle of Faranga".
Why should i play it?

It's not an usual RPG. It's an action RPG, and that means that the way you control the character really matters. Sure, if you meet someone a lot more powerful than you (orcs) you will get raped easily, but you can develop your skills if you have enough experience (and money).
Maybe you can't personalize your character (not even the name because he probably doesn't even have one) but at least you aren't a mute freak. The main character voice is good and Diego is a charming fellow.
It's my all time favorite game, really hardcore RPG. Expect to get your ass handed to you many many times as there's no level scaling or handholding of any description. Gothic 1 is also amazing, just make sure you ignore gothic 3 and up because gothic 3 was forced to be released unfinished by the publisher, and gothic 4 is completely unofficial, is one of the worst games of all time, and has nothing to do with anything really.
On a final note, don't buy gothic 1 or 2 off steam. They're not even up to date with the latest patch even to this day, and GOG comes with built in compatibility to get these working properly on modern machines.
The original Gothic had place in a mining colony surrounded by a magic barrier that permitted people to enter but not to leave. You are IN the colony and you can join the RED, the BLU or the Brotherhood, a nice group of cultists with bad headaches.

Yes, that is a dragon, not a wyvern.
It's the sequel of the first episode (obviously) and i won't say more because if i do i'll spoiler the ending of the first one. You can join the village people, the Fire Mages or the mercenaries. Also it has a really good expansion.

BUG GALORE
It's a lot more open than Gothic 1 and 2, mostly because you have a goddamn entire continent to explore, from glaciers to deserts.
It's not bad, but it's a bit rushed. If you want to play it install the patches and the Community Patch: http://www.g3cpt.eu/
Or you can't install them if you enjoy being mauled to death by a fucking boar.
Do NOT buy the Forsaken Gods. For the love of Innos.

This gam... ahhhh fuck this shit.

Steam (you get also the first Gothic if you buy the bundle, but then you'll get also Arcania+ expansion and The Forsaken Gods and you'll feel bad for having them):

Gothic 4 is shit, but Gothic 3 is actually really good if you get the community patch.
The voice acting in Gothic 3 is god awful. Plus the combat is really weird. Is it seriously just click mouse 1 as fast as you can?
The first Gothic is on Steam, it's in the bundle.
Gothic 3 on Steam already has an older version of the community patch with it.
If you have an ATI card though, you'll want a newer version because shadows won't work with ATI cards without a weird bug.
I tried Gothic 2 Gold but I couldn't get into it. I mean it seemed fun, but it was so damn hard. I even cheated to level up like five times and still got my ass kicked in the first area.

A little advice: stick on the road. You'll get raped if you even DARE to think to leave it. Also, beware of the bandits. It's possible to defeat them, but you can also run like a pussy toward the city. Be cautious, be patient and don't be afraid to run away. Also, do the little quests like the farming and the hunting ones, they are essential to your character development. Gothic 2 is really hard but it's really really good. Oh, and you could craft weapons and kill dragons before it was cool.
thread died already? :(
I bought Gothic 2 gold on steam and goddamn it's hard. Probably the hardest rpg I've ever played. I joined the militia, got a sword and armor and can barely kill a wolf. I've played the standard edition before, so I'm not new to the game. But holy fuck it's hard. Great game though...
