Knights of Honor is a real-time strategy game. The game takes place in Medieval Europe, spanning the early centuries of the second millennium in three historical time periods. The player can choose to play as one of over 100 playable kingdoms. Knights of Honor is played on a large map of Europe spanning from Ireland to Georgia and from Scandinavia to the northern coast of Africa. The map is divided into parcels of land called provinces. Each province is governed by a city and contains several "Rural Areas" which can be towns, farms, monasteries and coast towns. These rural areas can't be altered and are placed randomly across the map before each game. The city, however has room for several buildings which can give bonuses to the rural areas or the city itself, such as more piety in the monasteries when a church is built or a higher income from the towns when a market is present in the city. Other buildings are needed to recruit certain units (such as a sword smith for sword-wielding units or a fletcher for bow-wielding units) or to defend the city such as walls and towers. A city only has limited room for buildings. Thus, not all buildings can be built in a city and the player must carefully consider what to build for a particular city. Compared to other strategy games, building structures in KOH takes a rather vast amount of time.
For a relatively small (1.8GB) game, it's surprisingly fun. I've devoted hours and hours into this and I consistently find myself coming back to it, after months of not playing. I definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it, and to anyone that has played it? Re-install it!
The AI isn't too retarded, and the game definitely is a good challenge. You can play LAN (I've never been able to, no friends willing to try it out) or play by yourself (I play with myself most nights...) and it's a massive time-sink. Five hours gone before you know it. I'm going to go ahead and add some copy / paste from Wikipedia, to describe the game mechanics:
Resources
There are three kinds of resources which can be spent on a variety of upgrades. Money is needed to recruits units, build buildings, etc. It is earned by taxes, trading and kingdom power. Piety is used for increasing your kingdom power and converting provinces to your religion. Books are used to educate your knights and adopting provinces. Towns themselves also generate hammers (used to construct certain buildings) and food which determines how long they can withstand sieges.
Knights
Special units known as "Knights" are what make the players' kingdom, besides himself. Every kingdom has a "Royal Court" which can contain up to nine knights. The player can hire the royal dynasty, consisting of the King himself and up to three heirs, to become knights. The advantage to this is that these four are completely free of charge and have no wages.
Six different types of knights can be hired.

The main goal of the game is to become emperor of Europe. However, the player is free to do whatever they wish. There is no set time limit. You get to pick what nation you start off as (a favourite of mine is to become the King of England and subjugate Wales, Scotland and Ireland [filthy, uncivilized peasants that they are] and then attempt to conquer the dirty Frogs - beg pardon, I mean French. The world is a better place without those snail-eating cowards) and decide which time period to start off in (different time periods give different nations [as in, the Nation of York in the early years, or later on it'll be the Nation of Britain etc etc]).
It's a really great game, and I can't recommend it highly enough. I hope you all get this game and realize what a hidden gem it is. You can all thank me later.
I'm about to hop in-game now and start a new nation, might be Norway for once, or something else I haven't played.
[editline]23rd October 2012[/editline]
Started the game in the earliest period as Denmark. Got zerg-rushed by Norway (the fuckers) and lost my capital. Whoops!
I'm just gonna go ahead and ask, what is this like compared to AOE II? I have been looking for a good replacement because me and a few friends are tired of playing AOE II.
It looks really cool
Ten bucks on steam.

$5.31 in the "Indie" Gala bundle.

Just bought the Indie Gala Bundle, installing this right now. Looks amazing!
Also, what day does the Indie Gala Bundle 10 finish?
I started a game as Denmark. I was doing great. It's taken ~3 days of playing to get to where I was: I conquered all of Sweden and Norway, and had that whole area of the map as my base. I then went into an era of peace, and built up these castles vastly. I had so many goods (honey, wax, wine, etc) and amazing buildings, as well as having really good built-up walls for the "frontier" or "outskirt" castles, so any enemies landing on my shores wouldn't have an easy time of laying siege to my castles.
I was going through my Golden Age, if you will. I was working on getting the Kingdom Advantages that best suit me. I managed to get Increase Population, the Knight one (+3 Morale) and the Happiness advantage. I was doing really well. I was just building up my economy and buffing up my castles, filling each stronghold with a good militia (spearmen, archers, swordsmen). I was safe from attacks.
My court comprised mostly of Knights. My King was a Merchant and I had another Merchant, just for some extra gold. I was doing so well, +400 gold income on the highest tax, my people were happy, my Knights were experienced and deadly. Due to this, I felt it was time to expand my horizons. I looked West, I looked to Britain, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The wrath and destruction I was about to unleash on their peoples completely took them off guard. I felt like a God, and a God does not even recognize the Ants he crushes beneath his feet.
I had one taskforce of Knights whose job it was to travel out to distant countries, besieging castles and conquering new, lush lands. They were the deadly ones. Highest morale, highest dread, highest learning and siege weapon experience. They were a force to be reckoned with, and no army could easily stand toe-to-toe with them. I'd send them out in groups of two, to ensure they'd never suffer too heavy a loss. They'd pretty much steamroll through enemy territories, and I'd always have enough gold to restock them with new men and weapons, and - if need be - new units to replace killed units.
The other taskforce of Knights was donned the honor of guarding our homeland. Guard it from what, you might say? Surprisingly enough, the strongest Nation in the game has it's fair share of enemies, plus some. They'd have the skill that allows fast marching, dread, and the morale against rebels. They'd just run from castle to castle, quelling rebellions and pushing back outside attackers. They were good at what they did, and they preferred not having to leave home soil.
My original King (who sadly died shortly after conquering all of Norway and Sweden) had two sons. Prince Ottar and his King-to-be brother (the Merchant Prince). Prince Ottar became somewhat of our Nation's hero. He was born into a life of bloodshed. He entered the world on the backs of Demons. He was our conqueror. He spent his youth fighting against Norway and Sweden, and that made him become a reputable and fierce warrior to be reckoned with. Before I sent him off to Britain (he was the spearhead of my attack), I decided to level up his Fort Building skill. I couldn't have chosen a better skill to give him, as it saved him so many times in hostile lands when he was outnumbered. Setting up a fort in enemy territory that shoots swathes of arrows at enemies and gives a great defense bonus was extremely handy.
He would take two armies on by himself and walk away with mere flesh wounds. His men were battlehardened, grisly veterans that shrugged off blows and dealt fierce attacks in return. He took over all of Ireland and Wales and Mercia by himself. He was the best man in my army.
However, his weakling brother, with his weak and frail heart, ended up dying at the worst time. Nobles ended up fighting over his lands and my kingdom was split into lots of small territories. It was a sad day. Everything Ottar's father had fought for had been lost due to his pathetic brother.

My glorious nation after the shitty nobles bitched and bickered and tore the nation apart. I owned all of Britain, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden.
However, it is said that Ottar and his brotherhood of soldiers travelled to distant lands, in the hope of earning the patronage and wealth of a foreign King. Some say that one day, Ottar shall return in blood and fire. He will return home as he once entered it, on the backs of Demons. Many a story is shared in taverns across the world about how Ottar's men traded their souls in return for Demonic strength. Perhaps the day of reckoning is soon. All the petty nobles that tore apart Ottar's homeland shall suffer a terrible fate.
I remember playing this when I was younger, does it even work with Windows 7?
Yes! It's amazing. Starting again as Glorious Russia, or perhaps France.
Protip: Don't play as the Fatimids or one of those Arab countries. Really slow-going and you get brutally attacked from countries to the North.
Since the Arab cities are spaced so far apart, it takes for ever to quell rebellions and send Knights to defend against attackers. Really a horrible experience. Played it once and became rich, but it was so tedious and frustrating. So yeah, stick to one of the European countries, more fun!
If there's one thing I fucking hate about this game, it's the god damn diplomacy. I was playing as France, doing pretty damn well. I then go and take out weak countries, like Nevarre. Once I take Nevarre out, I decide to declare war on Aragon and just loot their lands for gold and experience, but not take any of their cities. As soon as I declare war on Aragon (they only had Portugal as their ally), shit hits the fan.
I'm not entirely sure if it's the fact I was ridiculously powerful as a country, I was the top in lands owned, military strength, population happiness and wealth, but literally EVERY single fucking country kept declaring war on me. I kept on repelling invaders one after the other, but as soon as I conquer their attackers and demand a white peace, they declare war after a few clicks in-game. It was frustrating.
"We are honoured to have a white peace with you, oh mighty France. Thank you so much for this opportunity to live!" then five fucking clicks later "<Douchebag Fuckwit Twatty Country> Has Declared War On You, Sire!" This happened over and over with Munster, Leinster (I didn't even do jack-shit to them!), Wales, Germany, Papal States (They were so far away from me, how did I manage to piss them off?), and then even countries like Morocco and Algeria.
Fucking broke-ass piece of game mechanics that handle diplomacy, it's ridiculous.
So yeah, my King ended up trying to repel two armies from Munster, and he ended up dying. I rage-quit after that, because I'd spent the last 40 minutes repelling wave after wave of enemy fuckwads.
"If there's one thing I fucking hate about this game, it's the god damn diplomacy. I was playing as France..."
is it bad that I instantly thought you were going to say "and they didn't give me an option to surrender"
also, this game looks like a mix between stronghold and AoE.
not inherently a bad thing to be honest
My Knights don't carry riding crops into battle (which would help increase their speed and get them to battle quicker), instead, they tether their horses with a piece of string that they can pull in an emergency to turn their horses around and run away.
But yeah, this game is awesome, just the diplomacy sucks. I don't know if it's a handicap issue (IE all the countries team up on you because you're the strongest) or if it's just a shitty diplomacy thing, but either way, it's ridiculous.
Trying to make someone become your vassal is nigh on impossible. They have 2 strongholds left after you've taken 6 of theirs, they have literally no army on the field, and yet they still refuse to become your vassal. It's insane. And if - by chance - they do decide to become your vassal? You have about 10 minutes of loyalty before they declare their independence and attack you again with all the gold they hoarded.
This game is so great, it is actually a really neat alternative to Total War. I really like how everything plays together, it is also not that hard to get into. The realtime is also something different than the usual turnbased games. Also pillaging and looting is really satisfying :v:
The only thing I dislike is when your leader is killed, you simply loose the whole game.
