I'm looking for a really good airplane combat simulator. There is no preference with which kind of airplanes, but the age of the game would be preferable to be within the past five years, if possible.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
(Also, I have tried Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X., wasn't all that great.)
Il2 sturmovik
It's a bit older than 5 years but the graphics are still pretty decent
IL-2 Sturmovik and the new one looks fantastic. I was a huge flight simulation fan back in like 2000/2001 and some of the best flight games were from the late 90s as well. You should definitely give the old Jane Combat Simulation series a try if you can deal with the antiquated graphics and such. But as for newer flight games, I'm not too familiar with them apart from IL-2: Birds of Prey and possibly the newer Ace Combat games.

If you want Ultra realism simulator get DCS blackshark
I have heard many great things about IL-2 Sturmovik. Does it actually run on Vista, because I would love to give it a try!

Yes it does.
Fighter Squadron: Screamin' Demons Over Europe.
With mods it has an assload of aircraft and ground vehicles, including Korean War era stuff and experimental aircraft. Plus there is a popular World War One mod for it that has yet another assload of aircraft and ground vehicles, including a Zeppelin.
Jane's Combat Simulations are good if you can handle the incredible complexity of each airplane. Longbow 2 is an exception as it contains an actual good tutorial that teaches you everything step by step.
Like everyone else, I recommend IL-2 if you want World War II airplanes. It's still a bit tricky to get into, but at least you don't need to learn how an F-16's radar works to fire a single AMRAAM.
If you really want some quick and good airplane fun, go play Crimson Skies - you won't regret it!
IL2 biiiitch.
I 5th IL-2.
Although, if you actually play it on max simulation difficulty, its really fucking hard.

I remember that game for the original xbox, t'was awesome.
Ace Combat
IL2 really comes into it's own when you get to playing Co-op with friends, and everyone has their own custom airplane skin. So get the 1946 edition on Steam, well worth the $10.

3rd, 4th and 5th Gen Aviation:
Falcon 4.0
Lock On Modern Air Combat
Seven-G (More of an F-18 Simulator than Combat Sim)
Janes USAF (If you can Find it)
Novalogic's F-22, Mig 29 games, Old but good
Second Gen Aviation sims:
IL2 Sturmovik, Aces, Forgotten Battles, Pacific Fighters. These can all be installed into each other, Pacific Fighters and Il2 Sturmovik are Stand-alone too though
Microsoft Combat Flight Sim TWO (Third one sucks, second builds on the first one)
1st Gen Aviation:
Red Baron 3D (Old but good)
Rise of Flight
You said Sim, So I didn't bother with HAWX, Ace Combat, and games like those
Lock on is supposidly going to be patched soon that will allow players of lock on to fly with players of black shark and vica versa, it's going to be awesome!
Having a buddy in a blackshark clear out AAA or something so I can zip over in my frogfoot and bomb some bitches, weeee!

That will be fun, No more SAM Ramming with the A-10, as long as they release the Apache version.... they're supposedly working on an A10 and Apache... the DCS fellas
Project reality BF2 mod flying is pretty realistic but it's not a sim.

Rise of Flight[/QUOTE]
I wouldn't waste my money on Rise of Flight, I was really unimpressed with it myself. For one, the planes all handle like you're flying in hurricane force winds (Though I think this can be turned off but I didn't bother hanging around long enough to find out), and two, extra planes will cost you $8 separately on top of the game's $39 value, a pretty shitty deal if you ask me. IL2 does so much better.
If you do want to get RoF, at least save yourself the trouble and get the demo first and don't get tricked by the account activation email, wait until RoF is downloaded and fully installed before you activate your account, because you only have 3 days to try it and the countdown starts the instant the account is activated.
I love how on IL2 the wings of a Me-262 (1946) get ripped off by early war (1938) light MG fire.

You could wait for DCS A-10 if you like planes more.

Man, ROF was wank. I got it and played it 3 or 4 times after I installed it...never played it scince. I was just unimpressed by it ...can't believe I spent the money I did on it. :\

Yes, flicking switches in an a-10 will be lolz. Also would be great flying an Apache with the detail of which you can fly the BS. I hope you can team up with a buddy with both detailed pilot and gunner positions!
Yeah, once Storm of War comes out I'm sure Rise of Flight will be stomped into the dust in short order.
I really wanted to like Rise of Flight too, I love those old wood and fabric biplanes, especially when they're rendered in such graphical quality inside and out.
halo 3
Raccoon, please be a troll.
il2
IL-2. I don't personally own it, but the amazing things I've heard have certainly put it on my shopping list.

Lead is Lead, no matter the era
Am I the only one who was a really hard time understanding IL2? I've tried to get into it, but it just seems so complicated.

It's really simple. Try messing with the difficultly settings to set it how you want it, and try starting in the air so you can get the hang of flying.

Ever think of the materials that plane wing is made of?
