Since new details, and a behind the scenes trailer was released, I felt it was finally time to start up a megathread for the upcoming sequel to the military simulator, Operation Flashpoint Summary: Operation Flashpoint 2 is a realistic military simulation, aiming to deliver the most realistic impression of modern conflict, in a 250 kilometres long Russian island Skira.
For foot, it will take days to travel through the island, vehicles, about 4 hours. Aircraft, 14 minutes with a figher jet.
Delivering authentic military weapons, tactics, vehicles, and allowing freeform way of tackling combat situations, the game delivers the reality of war, unlike such games as Ghost Recon Advanced Warfigher, Call of duty 4, etc. Platforms: Xbox360, PS3, PC Storyline: Currently not much detail, but will focus on the repelling of the People's Liberation Army of the island. You play as the United States Marines soldier, taking part in two acts, one that focuses on Special Forces and the other on the Marines. Gameplay: Unlike standard action oriented FPSes, you will engage enemies from hundreds of yards away, to mere metres. Also, you can jump into civilian and military vehicles, which consist of Chinese, Russian, and American military vehicles at your disposal, including M1A2 Abrams and Seahawk helicopters. Co-operative campaign is confirmed, with up to 8 player co-op confirmed by IGN. Release date: Summer 2009 (Not final) Images: Videos: Trailer HD recommended. Ingame tech demo Thanks to hl2poo. Articles: http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/955/955906p1.html
Yes, just like in Operation Flashpoint every building in the game can be entered.

There's a 24-hour day and night cycle. The environments are destructible, so you can blow up buildings the enemy is in. And it just feels real. For example, as I was sprinting for cover in that enemy village, I noticed a Seahawk overhead; it was actually providing cover with its chain gun. But I only caught it in the corner of my eye, as the sensation of running almost feels like you're watching combat footage taken by a guy who is running with the camera.
Features: -70 real life weapons are included in the game, all supported by a realistic ballistic system. -There are over 50 different Vehicles, all faithfully simulated. -Firing sequences from lifting the object up, to placing it on yourshoulder to turning it on and arming to fire is all faithfully simulated. Reloading is also faithfully simulated. Weapons can be attached with scopes and grenade launchers.
There are no 'magic' pockets, all equipment is in pockets, backpack, etc. Reloading, weapon placing, vehicles have all been motion captured.
Multiplayer: PC multiplayer -32 player (16 vs 16) in addition to the 256 NPC squad members (8 per squad per player) -8 player co-op in addition to NPC squad members -4 player Campaign + single mission co-op Console multiplayer 16 player (8 vs 8) in addition to NPC squad members 4 player co-op in addition to NPC squad members 4 player Campaign + single mission co-op
ArmA 2 looks like it'll be better but I've got my eye on this game.
If arma2 is going to have rubbish performance like first one and OP2 will be better... well to choice lays here.
Personally I'm afraid that this will be consolized, aka, not as much depth than the previous one :( That's just me however.

because it is actually realistic.

I intend to buy it the day it is released.
How is this different from a standard FPS?
Have you even played Operation Flashpoint, or ArmA? These types of games are very realistic. The game looks good, but I'm more interested in Arma 2, since it's being made by Bohemia Interactive Studio, the actual developers of Operation Flashpoint, I love how Codemasters stole the name just because they published it.
How is this different from a standard FPS?
Okay here's the scenario: You're attacking a village, there's a few houses, and you have about 9 people in your squad. Theres a few guards, although you're not sure how many. Normal FPS: *You reach the village via stealth, and you go guns ablazing. Epic scenario, with hundreds of soldiers rushing in, full artillery, cinematic air strikes, etc ensues, while all it is is pretty colours until you reach that house to end the mission. OMG THIS IZ SO COOL REALISTIC LOLOOLLOLOL!!!11!!! Operation Flashpoint: *You reach the village via stealth, and you go guns ablazing. You die instantly.

Edit: I never noticed how dependable backup is, in your average FPS. And now that I think of it, things rarely work out that way in a real battle. I really want to play this now!

This I am going to buy. Also, unrelated. I have some disco music playing, and it really matches hl2poo's avatar.
I remember how the second OP pic looked so amazing last year. Now it's looking like every other game to me. I'll keep a watch on this though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMao0syTwvo ArmA 2 is looking more promising I think. Looks like they're keeping the realism of the first while giving it a graphical makeover, making it look much nicer. I hope it's going to be well optimized.

The only reason i would prefer OFP 2 to Arma 2 is that arma 2 looks like it's still on the old engine and all they did was make a large mod.
Agreed. Arma 2 looks like 70% original + 30% new content (Which half can be downloaded from mods) Edit: Exaggeration there, if you're offended
ArmA 2 is not on the old Real Virtuality engine. Did you read the preview PDFs on the ArmA 2 site? A big difference. It won't be a surprise if OFP 2 is going to have shitty and overpriced DLC.
I came.
Sweet, I loved the first game from years ago Even though I sucked at it and couldn't beat a single level D:
Hope they beef up the explosions.
Oh and hope map editor is cool, spawn like 50 us soldiers vs. 300 chinese dudes with a bunch of civies running around like retards in pitch blackness of a town and the only lights are the muzzle flashes and bullets whizzing by
Wait a minute, did I see bright muzzle flashes in the ego trailer instead of a puff of smoke? Oh, and a generic whiz instead of a crack when bullets go past you. I hope they change that or it can be modded out. Speaking of which, the CG trailer they had at E3 has the complete opposite.
Wait a minute, did I see bright muzzle flashes in the ego trailer instead of a puff of smoke?
Puff of smokes is gay, muzzle flashes leaving smoke and heat haze is cool.
Hope theres a mission when your in a airplane and you all jump out in the darkness and AA guns shooting up at everyone and your like "PEW PEW PEW" and land in shit creek and you got to regroup everyone and raid the town.
Puff of smokes is gay, muzzle flashes leaving smoke and heat haze is cool.
And yet they call it the most realistic depiction of modern warfare... This isn't Call of Duty 4 here.
The most realistic shooter i have played yet is Red Orchestra.
And yet they call it the most realistic depiction of modern warfare... This isn't Call of Duty 4 here.
Gameplay is what matters, not post processing effects. But I hate wimpy explosions and weak booms.
