• Valve want to share their microtransaction success with other devs
Valve have been experiencing some pretty notable success recently with the new microtransaction system in Team Fortress 2. We recently discovered that the TF2 store sells plenty of its most expensive items, and has been welcomed pretty much whole-heartedly by the community. Now, Valve hope to teach others what they’ve learnt through TF2 experimentation and help their partners implement microtransactions into their own Steamworks games. Read on for the details. With Steamworks’ new Microtransaction system, an in-game economy can now be readily created by anyone using the SDK. “We’ve come to understand what type of content sells well in TF2’s in-game store, and the various price points at which players value this content,” said Robin Walker, game designer at Valve. “Our players are continually teaching us what works and what doesn’t. Much of this feedback can be generalised to other titles on Steam, so we’re looking forward to sharing what we’ve learned with partners at GDC. We’re also interested in seeing partners get up and running with their own in-game economies, so they can collect game-specific data to inform their design decisions.
http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/02/28/valve-want-to-share-their-microtransaction-success-with-other-devs/
Whoever buys hats and guns for a game is an idiot. Microtransactions ruin the game for people who are not willing to spend loadsa money for a game.
Spend 1 hour making a hat -> Spend 2 minutes on a particle effect -> Put in crate -> Watch as you receive $1,000,000 in key sales
Someone actually buy items? I thought it was a joke.
Pappi, Team Fortress 2 is a money-milking machine. It's like those electric cow milkers, but instead of the cups sucking the udders, it's Robin sucking our wallets.

I can't imagine any other games being as successful as tf2 was. Apart from the COD series.
we whole-heartedly welcome it? I WANT YOU TO MEET FACEPUNCH SIR.

[editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
Well that's nice for the people who will use it since it'll tie with their steam wallet and whatnot. I don't think I'll buy anything through microtransactions though (can you even call the stuff you buy in TF2 microtransactions? I mean a lot of the stuff costs over 5€ per item).
This, some of the packs costs more than the game. I'll never buy anything from there.
Whoever buys hats and guns for a game is an idiot. Most of my friends purchased items because it's their own money and they don't play tf2 regulary enough to earn the items.
Whoever buys hats and guns for a game is an idiot. Microtransactions ruin the game for people who are not willing to spend loadsa money for a game.
How does a cosmetic item ruin a game for someone? Stop taking a game so seriously
Whoever buys hats and guns for a game is an idiot. "Oh no this guy used his money on something I think is stupid. What a dumbass."
http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/02/28/valve-want-to-share-their-microtransaction-success-with-other-devs/
Like Nexon ?
Whoever buys hats and guns for a game is an idiot. Microtransactions ruin the game for people who are not willing to spend loadsa money for a game.
You do know you can use Microtransactions for other things than hats and silly TF2 items, right?
You do know you can use Microtransactions for other things than hats and silly TF2 items, right?
It's not very hard at all to get the weapons. I crafted two sticky jumpers in a row.
I'm fine with microtransactions so long there is a different way to obtain the item relatively easily. (Like achievement weapons, not wait 27 hours and hope you don't get another duplicate item.)
Whoever buys hats and guns for a game is an idiot. Microtransactions ruin the game for people who are not willing to spend loadsa money for a game.
Why? because they force you to buy stuff?
Spend 1 hour making a hat -> Spend 2 minutes on a particle effect -> Put in crate -> Watch as you receive $1,000,000 in key sales
dunno if you're referencing someone in particular but that's kinda unfair if you're being general about the people who worked on the content
